Halo |OT16| Oh Bungie, Where Art Thou?

How is call of duty probably going to lose its steam? I feel it's just getting started. Look how Treyarch added streaming options, competitive playlists, actively courted MLG players.

I'm just saying it's going to run its course. Halo came over from the previous generation and then faded away during current gen. I don't know how there's any question the newest iteration of the franchise isn't very popular in online ladders.

Competitive Halo isn't dead 343 just forgot their importance hence they are busy playing other games. Your premise sentences are incorrect. Protip for 343 look how many people watch n play in this CoD tournament n how many people are in your game.

I think I'll hold off on saying Halo is going to make a comeback until I see Halo 5.

Regardless, I said, "assuming...," meaning, "under these given conditions, how would you answer this question?"

Halo faded away because the makers went away from what made Halo since ODST, not aging. CoD kept their formula and worked at it and enhanced not change.

The only downside to headphones is I can't tell how loud I'm screaming "THAT'S FUCKING BULLSHIT" until my wife comes in the room to tell me to shut the hell up.
Haha, been there!

I get the feeling Halo 5 won't have user-facing player counts with as much as it has been used to deride the franchise.

I can't believe that many people want to watch competitive Call of Duty. Maybe if I played it more, I'd enjoy it, but every time I've ever watched a stream, it's been boring as hell.

This is true. That's not what I'm asking, though. But changing is part of a franchise's aging process. It just is.

You could argue Call of Duty has changed its formula greatly since its first iteration. In some ways, Call of Duty has changed more than other competitive titles that have faded away on other platforms, like Team Fortress 2, Unreal Tournament, and Quake. Thankfully, Quake is still sort of popular and I can get my fix watching that every so often.

I don't get your point. If it's really that troubling for you to answer a hypothetical question, then I don't know what to tell you.

I'm talking more since CoD 4 (2007), now if Halo would have stayed the same since 2007 I could see a argument if the numbers where down for a change.

Again, I question how long you've been playing the Call of Duty franchise. If you look at Halo 1 and look at Halo 4, it's recognizable. If you watch the gameplay, it's recognizable. Same is true if you watch CoD 1 and Black Ops 2. However, you'd still notice a bunch of changes if you paid attention and watched for long enough.

First, Halo CE isn't close to Halo 2-4.

Now of course there is like a 10 year different between the games for CoD and Halo but CoD has kept up the same gameplay ideas since 2007 (the time the series exploded), Halo ignored the ideas of Halo 3 gameplay and enchained Equipment (which I'm sure people didn't really like) into a starting thing in Reach. Since Reach Halo has progressively gotten worse with fans and audience retention while CoD has kept their formulas with minor tweaks and additions of ranks, spectator mode, good dlc, updates, and now publisher support.

Wow. More people waiting to watch a game than are actually playing the supposed main competitor.

I'm at work and therefore not actually watching this... also, I share HiredNoobs opinion (wtf) and find COD boring as fuck. So even if I were home, I wouldn't be watching this anyway.

I'm sure this is going to sound petty but I could really use some help getting everything symmetrical and duplicated when I'm done building the primary structures on Archangel. I haven't made a serious attempt forging since halo 3.

Edit: how many seconds do we have to put things on delayed respawn so that they aren't affected by dynamic lighting, is it 9?

Perhaps, but it's not guaranteed they'd have a blockbuster population by working on what Halo was either.

I mean, I know what I want to play, and it's definitely the former, not this weird stuck in the middle child.

It lit the match of a powder keg that has been building as the rumours have been appearing. This is my point about controlling the message.
I have no problem with the points being made, but the whole mob mentality is kind of disgusting. At that point it just becomes this obsessive witch-hunt where the most reasonable aspects gets trampled and no F is given about anything.

FYI MS can go F themselves over always online.

Oh sure. I completely agree.

I just saw such a reaction coming and really hoped MS would get out in front of it before this happened.

Funny you mention that first thing, Cyren, because Call of Duty 1 is similarly "not close" to its contemporaries.

The rest of it really isn't poignant. Halo has lost popularity with its casual fans as well as those that seek to play it competitively. Kill streaks and perks weren't always in Call of Duty, either. You don't seem to understand how much Call of Duty has changed since it started. Setting some date for the start of fair comparison (like 2007) isn't effective because Halo was around on consoles an entire generation prior. Up until 2005, Call of Duty had no console presence.

It's honestly the same pattern, lol. How aren't you seeing it? Halo CE spawned MLG and the franchise rose in competitive popularity through Halo 2 and early into the next generation (360). Then, Halo 3 came out and the franchise became even more relevant to console eSports. Then, Halo's popularity waned as Call of Duty's waxed right at the end of THIS generation. Halo stepped over other titles failing to continually engage eSports players (the Rainbow Six franchise, for one) just as Call of Duty stepped over Halo.

Then what's your point? Apparently you don't really understand or appreciate how much the series has changed if you really think that's an effective argument.

There's more to it than that. And Halo hasn't faded away.

I also think that CoD will be around for a while especially with next gen hitting this year.

Yup. It'll have a massive core playerbase going into the new generation, and if Halo 2 was any indicator of how that franchise would trend, Call of Duty should peak (in eSports) during the next gen.

At that point, you start to wonder how well the PS4 and Durango will sell. If there's as drastic an increase in adoption as there was from Xbox to Xbox 360, Call of Duty could become the biggest competitive console title yet. At least until the next one.

It hasn't faded AWAY but it's certainly been fading. Halo used to be King FPS. Used to be the dominant MLG money maker. etc etc.

I'd say its mostly CoD's fault rather than Halo's, but still. Halo isn't doing much to help. I think we can all agree its not going to beat or come closer to Call of Duty by trying to be more like Call of Duty.

Speaking of trends, we could very well see a new king FPS. Maybe it won't even be an FPS, more like the king game that everyone plays.

Despite the PS2's dominance last gen, Halo was THE game to play with friends. This trend continued for the first part of Halo 3, but after CoD4 exploded people began to pick sides and CoD only grew bigger and dominated this gen.

Next gen we could see something else. I hope we see something else.

The only reason CoD has a popular competitive community is because there are no other shooters that dominate said community. CoD matches are still not that exciting to watch and when (if) another shooter that has real competitive play is made, the CoD competitive scene will die down.

I respect all the attention it's getting and I still watch them, but only because nothing else interests me.

Absolutely, and I'm excited to see what it is because I'm not terribly fond of Call of Duty anymore. I miss arena shooters and games with more complex movement systems. I hope the next big shooter deviates from the tired modern warfare trope.

Yeah, it's funny how successful Halo 2 was despite the Xbox being less popular than the PS2. Truth be told, the Xbox Live community had a very passionate and engaging competitive audience pretty much since the service debuted. Clan matches, online ladders, the old, barely moderated Xbox.com forums... Good times. PS2 didn't really have that outside of SOCOM.

I'm with you. I long for a new shooter franchise. That's part of why I switched to primarily PC gaming, as I have more fun with the FPS games available exclusively on that platform.

Dude stop editing your post after I reply, I'm done replying this is the 2nd time.

My bad. One of them I posted prematurely on accident because I got twitchy with my mouse.

Shooters can be more competitive and watchable than they currently are.

Hell yes they can. I believe that they already have been in the past, but that's a different discussion.

In 'what the hell, Microsoft' news today, I can't upload map that says "Support for KotH and Extraction". I had to change it to "Supports KotH and Extraction".

'for' is now a dirty word to MS

I feel like I'd be coming in here (this thread) to join everyone in beating a dead horse.

Halo 4 is a bit of a letdown right now (6 months after release?). Halo 5 better be damn impressive if they want me to get the nextbox (or maybe this is a sign, with me going off to college and whatnot). Honestly I probably won't even get a PS4 or anything come whenever stuff releases. *shrugs*

Oh well. Anyone wanna play halo 4 send me (iLove My Fruits) a heads up via friend request/message/hate mail to get something going; still a regular despite how ambivalent I am about the game.

Thinks the Evil Empire is just misunderstood.

Ha ha, if i had to guess I'd say it was the proximity between "for" and the "K" in KOTH. Silly, I know.

I'm graduating from college and beginning my professional life at the same time the next gen is coming out, lol. I think it really is a sign.

It's a sad day when you realize you're too old for video games. Sadder still when you keep playing like me.

You can't start a professional life and also be a gamer? I think I may have missed that memo.

No, I can. I'm still going to have my PC which I built less than a year ago, so I'll be on that platform for the most part. I wish I could have $400 or so to buy a PS4 or Durango when it comes out, but even if I save now, I'll have more pertinent necessities and limited funds by the time they launch.

Blops 2 MP is bad though.

Word.

I think it's also important to take a step back and look at the entire competitive scene. It's DOMINATED by Non-shooter PC games. LoL, StarCraft 2 and Dota2 are juggernauts and aren't going anywhere for a long ass time. I think it's also important to note though this eSports is only going to go up from here on out. Competitive shooters will get bigger and better. And you could argue that CoD is already huge in eSports but that's just one game. I'm talking all of eSports shooters.

I think one thing where Bungie and now 343 messed up on is taking the hardcore fans for granted, at least to a certain extent. I think if you've got a really strong hardcore fan base that's happy, they're going to give your game legs. They're going to tell all their friends to play Halo with them. "Yo what games are you playing Tashi?" "Halo, StarCraft and Dota. Get them, we'll play. Shit is fun bro!" That's valuable. Valve hands out Dota2 keys like they're fucking Tic Tacs. I've given out like 5 keys to friends and family. I had extra so I gave like 6 to Ryaan for him and his friends. Everytime I play Halo with my old teammate I say, "Yo when are you getting Heart of the Swarm bro? We gotta play. I need someone to play with." He's going to buy the game really soon.

How is Defiance? Been interested in that since it was first announced.

Best way I can put it, its not great but its a lot of fun. I already sunk 20+ hours into it and still having fun.

Also if you want a MMO version of Borderlands where random missions pop up as you are moving along, want to team up with 200+ people to take out a huge boss, want to do a decent amount of dungeon's with 4 people or if you want to play 100v100 PvP (can also do 8v8 and 16v16)

Again its not great but its fun and I got all my monies worth already and there really is nothing else like it on the 360.

I haven't played Call of Duty in a long time. It's boring, and filling up bars isn't fun.

Anyways MS released a (generic) statement on yesterdays incident,

"We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers. We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter."

The one I could never figure out back in the Halo 3 days was "Big Team Slayer" was blocked. You had to rename films/gametypes to "Slayer Big Team" to let it upload.

Try as I might, I couldn't figure out what it was detecting.

Yeah, sorry. I should have clarified I was talking about shooters. In the console space, at least, that's the only significant eSports community.

Part of the problem with PC is that its "best" competitive shooters are older than my dog.
