Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

Hmmm... so let's discuss the implications of having both Call of Duty: Halo, and Halo 4: Call of Duty launching within a week of each other.

Both will sell well, Blops 2 will beat Halo 4 by a wide margin.
I don't really see the 2 games affecting each other without marketing campaigns that attack each other like BF3 did last year.

Liklihood : CoD does amazing numbers, Halo does good/okay numbers.

They both will suffer slightly by being so close, but Halo more so (and still do well) because CoD is the staple at the moment.

Taken from the website:
Pushing the boundaries of what fans have come to expect from the record-setting entertainment franchise,
Call of Duty®: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to
create a new generation of warfare. Pre-order today.

Another cold war?

I find this less and less likely to happen. I know CoD is really popular right now, but I think Halo4 is going to be good enough and hyped enough to have more of an effect on blops2's sales instead of the opposite. Maybe I'm crazy for thinking that.

Honestly, as long as I get good matchmaking times and fantastic maps, I'll be happy. It's still somewhat surprising to me that every once in a while I'll go play Halo 3 and it only has a few thousand less players than Reach.

Craziness.

I'm with you here. If this marketing campaign for Halo 4 is as balls-to-the-wall as it seems it's going to be, I don't think anyone has to worry about anything. It'll be a beautiful, smooth ride from E3, through PAX, to Nov 6.

That said, I'd like to see some footage of BO2. If it is indeed a more sci-fi oriented shooter, then I'm instantly interested. I hate the whole "realistic/hollywood" type games, except maybe Battlefield. Sci-fi/fantasy or bust.

ODST in BLOPS 2 ?

It's a SWAT guy who happens to have a black visor.
Bungie didn't really invent the concept...

It's also probably going to be set about 20 years in the future, not 500.

This post is 100% cynical.

Blops 2 will outsell Halo 4 on 360, and probably by at least 5 million copies.

Hey, 343 wanted to chase COD money. Now it's go time. We'll see how the market reacts to two futury multiplayer FPS games released on the same day, one from a franchise that they kinda remember playing 6 years ago when there were no other games out (or when they were 7 years old), and the other from a franchise that all their friends play for 4 hours a day.

When you come at the king, you best not miss. I see a lot of replication in H4, but not much to sway people over.

It's not as black and white as you say it, but you have the jist of it.

I do think that 343I will be aiming to be the best selling 360 Halo game.

I've taken the liberty of bolding the only part about this post that doesn't make me sad - and that's only because I'm a fan of The Wire.

It's an interesting discussion and one that's hard to predict.

Battlefield 3 doubled the sales of BFBC2, so even if it didn't do better than CoD there's still room for expansion in the FPS genre.

Halo is a brand people know, Master Chief is a character people are familiar with, if Microsoft can make Halo 4 feel like a cultural event like they did with Halo 2 and 3 I see no reason why they can't do 15-20 million units.

That won't beat CoD across multiple formats, but should trump it on 360. It doesn't have to be an either/or scenario, people who buy CoD can buy Halo too.

I REALLY hope Microsoft forces 343 to make an ad making fun of CoD. Almost like what BulletStorm did with the Halo 3 "Believe" ad. Not because I strongly dislike CoD, but because it will get people talking.

I want to think that Microsoft is going to do a marketing blitz with this and utilize everything they have to make this game sell. ie Internet Ads, Dashboard Ads, Online mini series, Magazine Ads, Partnerships (gamerfuel), etc. Obviously its about impossible to outsell something that's multiplatform, but 343 is obviously pointing this game's direction to appeal to a much broader audience. Whatever game sells more, it won't be that large of a margin IMO.

Yeah, I was going to mention the install base but felt it was self evident.

Sure, but not within 7 days of each other.

Get CoD in November and Halo for Black Friday/Christmas or even next year if 343I do some special post release marketing/content.

If Spartan Ops is properly advertised and explained I think that could be a really big pull and a reason to be there from day one. That said, I think it's a tricky feature to sell in a 30 second TV ad.

Microsoft already has two things going for it in terms of advertising impact, the fact that it's 'Halo 4' and the fact MC is the poster child again.

i remember the ads when they came out, and i actually just recently purchased bulletstorm. the single player was actually pretty fun.

yeah, enjoyed the hell out of that game my first play through. doesnt really lend itself to replay much though IMO. maybe the score run mode...
