Maybe they should actually market the real Metroid games instead of treating them like second class citizens.

Sadly that is part of it, and if Halo didn't sell well would you be okay with MS not releasing any Halo games? Metroid sells ok but not a Mario or even Zelda.

But when done right it can be something appreciated by a diverse range of gamers and not just Metroid fans, like Metroid Prime.
