Halo |OT8| A Salt on the Control Room

I'm obviously against the waypoint over people's heads considering I fucking hate radar. I'm against things that don't require players to have a keen sense of map awareness and game time awareness. It's not going to make a huge difference though but it will make some difference.

It used to be if your flag was stolen, you had to communicate with your teammates and figure out where the flag was going. In small maps and large maps. That's just the way it was. And this is just from a defensive standpoint. Offensively, you can't hide. It will obviously take other skills to get the map across and score but the sneaky cap seems to be dead.

In the grand scheme of things, whatever. I'm sure I'll get used to everything and love the game like I love every Halo.

Thanks. I weigh 145-150ish right now depending on the time of day/what i've eaten, hopefully I can get down to 130 at the absolute maximum. I may not always look it but I have so much body fat, it sucks.

It's all about how much you consume and how much you burn.

Burn more than what you consume and you'll start burning fat.

Not arguing that it's a radical change. it's one of the single most dramatic changes to a gametype for ages. And it will be significant. And it requires players to rethink the entire mode. We've been upfront about that. But we've also been playing it and testing it for a long time and we feel confident it's going to be enjoyed. Short term impressions even, have been glowingly positive, even with the fears and caveats you describe.

Everything about it is fine (except the blooming pistol; fuck that). I actually like that you guys are choosing a direction and sticking to your guns in matchmaking.

That said, why such a hard line on the custom side of things? You're catering to Grifball and rocket race and zombies and every other random gametype out there, but not allowing players to have a custom game of classic CTF?

I just don't follow the logic.

That's why I'm optimistic. You guys are most definitely proud of this game, that much is apparent. And yeah, impressions back up what you guys have told us. After PAX, I do feel better than I did before. Not sure if that's due to the campaign vid though (have I mentioned how much I love how campaign's looking? I don't think I have, haha)
I think you're framing this wrong. Your playstyle in Halo 4 will be different than it was in previous Halo games because of these changes. You're trying to fit a square peg in a circular hole. You probably won't be near the flag unless you intend to pick it up. I know that if I'm escorting a flag guy I'm going to keep my distance incase he gets blown up and the flag flies in my hands. Also, Jessica said in the Q&A that you have to be right on top of the flag to pick it up.

Oh shit, I just thought of something. Frank, do bullets, rockets and other projectiles pass through flag poles? Say yes...and mean it.
True, different doesn't always mean worse. I'll wait and see, but I definitely have some reservations about CTF. Very excited to see it's in a playlist by itself at least (I do think it needs 1-Flag in there, 2-Flag only may get stale).

The outrage against CTF is amazing.

It's a team game with an overall goal of moving something from point A to point B. A team game, that should require a team effort to accomplish that goal. You can't singlehandedly grab the flag, sneak out the back, and run it all the way to the other base without the other team knowing you're there? Oh no. Grab the flag, take it as far as you can, and die. Guess what, you get to respawn! Or your teammates get to grab it. The flag doesn't return just because you died, and the enemy team can't influence the flag returning speed in any way.

"Good luck getting the flag out of the base to begin with!"

What are the chances that the entire team is sitting inside their base, guarding every entrance? Slim and none. If they're stuck inside their base, they are making zero progress towards winning. And if for whatever reason they are all sitting inside the base, protecting the flag, then maybe you should think about switching up your loadout to something that would actually help you grab it, or help you thin out the defense.

As far as dropping the flag goes, why is it such a big deal that you can't do this? The only argument I think is valid is that it goes against traditional Halo CTF. You can't flag juggle, but honestly there's no reason to do that now. You already move at full speed. You can't "pass" the flag to a teammate, but picking up the flag has made it your responsibility to deliver it as best you can anyway. Passing the flag saves time but that's it. Invest the time you saved into taking a safer path with more cover. Or have that teammate you were going to pass the flag to actually cover you while you deliver it.

You aren't defenseless with the flag now, so that waypoint isn't extremely troublesome. The enemy team will come after you, but it should rarely come down to you vs everyone. And if it does, you aren't grabbing the flag when you should be.

I think 343's whole focus with what they've changed has been to clearly define flag carrier as a role that you choose to fill. You pick up the flag, you take on the responsibility of running it to the best of your abilities. If you die, the game goes on, and someone else might decide to take over.

Yeah, I'm there with you Dax.

Although mine is probably for different reasons. I was struggling for a long time with my Crohn's (inflammatory bowel disease), but thankfully through new medication, diet and exercise and ultimately surgery - I'm on the mend. Currently, I'm in remission and I've gained over 26 pounds in the past few months. (I was at 112 after surgery, now 138). It feels really good to finally feel somewhat normal again and I'm working hard to continue to improve every day. Ultimately, what helped me the most when it came to diet was the elimination of as many sugars and carbs as possible and an increase in chicken and fish intake.

Halo definitely helped me through some really tough moments in my life, when I wasn't feeling particularly well or when I was in the hospital recovering from surgery.

I'm really thankful in that respect.

I'll be actually doing a Crohn's walk this coming fall to raise awareness/donations: http://online.ccfa.org/site/PageServer?pagename=TS_homepage

I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, mine's for completely different reasons. Either I don't eat enough, or I have a very high metabolism. Probably some combination of the two.

Ugh. What is with all the suckiness in the world? Ram's kid and cystic fibrosis, you and Crohn's. Looks like I'll be dropping some serious cash in donations this month.

To workoutGAF: any easy ways to just flat-out burn fat? I'm not really looking to build muscle at all, I just want to lose weight. :(

Running and swimming.

With running and swimming you will gain some type of muscle. With running you'll notice differences in your calf muscles and legs. With swimming you'll notice your shoulders and arms getting slightly bigger.

All in all if you just want to burn fat, eat right and do cardio exercises.

It's all about how much you consume and how much you burn.

Burn more than what you consume and you'll start burning fat.

And, Wahrer- I would add to that: you might just start with exercise. Start getting some good cardio 4-5 times a week. After a while, you'll feel better, you'll sleep better, and you'll start to look better in the mirror. Then the slippery-slope begins. You'll likely want to start seeking out healthier foods and finding other ways to get more exercise, etc. It's best to start small and go from there. Trying to do too many radical things at burns a lot of people out quickly.

I don't seem to mind the flag change at all. Seems pretty neat to be honest.

My one and only cocern that will make or break the game for me is whether or not Halo 4 will have a skilled based ranking system.

I'd still prefer noncompetitive Halo over "competitive" CoD any day.

Non-competitive Halo gets boring real fast.

But Blops 2 will have ranks and skill based playlists...

Treyarch knows how to make excellent COD games.

Gameplay still sucks in my opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the possible existence of a skill based ranking system hasn't been shot down, no?

Can anyone confirm 1 Flag CTF ? Because in my opinion 2+ Flag does not work on maps that aren't symmetric.

I just don't follow the logic.

Likely because they are pushing the new CTF. They are giving it a full playlist of JUST the new CTF. They probably don't want to have a comparison against the newly designed game, within the same multi-player.

This way, it will force people to play this new style and ONLY this new style. After a month or three, based on other comments, I'm betting changes would be made based on feedback from both data collected in game, and more subjective stuffs in the communities at large.

Skill will be a factor for matchmaking in Halo 4.
But it also was in Reach...
They've pretty much outright denied any form of publicly visible rank.
I believe they hinted at letting you, privately, know how your skill compares to the public.

To clarify: I do exercise. Right now I just do a simple 2 miles on an exercise bike, primarily lower body monday/wednesday: 100 leg presses on the machine in one rep set to 60 pounds, 30-45 ab crunches at 60 pounds, 50 shoulder presses (in 2 reps of 25) at 60 pounds, and 50 on the pectoral fly machine (2 reps of 25). Tuesday/thursday is the same, save for replacing leg presses with 50 bicep curls on the machine in 2 reps of 25 set to sixty.

I don't have a diet, per se, I just try to only eat out of necessity rather than boredom or anything like that, and of course I try and eat reasonably healthy, making sure I hit the four major food groups daily. Given how much weight I already lost, I might want to look into eating even less and switching to mostly healthy stuff though.

^^^ Cutting soda, fast food, chips, and candy helps loads too. Cut soda!

LOL

I like how Stinkles replies in this forum. Show he's more of a bro than anything.

I'm not really worried about casuals and mediocre peoples. I'm worried about decent team vs decent team and how that will play out when they know right where the flag is and stuff. Guess we'll see.

I sure hope Assault is in. :/

Thats all well and good, but if you radically change something giving the option to play the old version would be nice. If people want to play the old CTF, forcing them to play the new one even in customs probably means they will just play Slayer or something.

The Skill factor didnt work in Reach at all. I had match ups with guests, new accounts, and kids with KDs as bad as Frankie. The Skill search is broken in Halo Reach and I hate it when people keep saying it is there, when it 100% feels like its not.

In my opinion BLOPS felt off for some other reason, hit-detection and the overall feel of the game was weird.
Still way wayyy better then that mess of modern warfare games excluding COD4. I love Treyarch Cod games, really looking forward to Blops 2.

As for H4 I just have worries for not being able to drop the flag. But being able to throw the oddball seems like a blast, looking forward to that.

The lack of flag dropping and auto-pickup means this game would have ended as a draw. I wouldn't have grabbed the flag unless I knew it meant I had a better chance at beating the other player(which with the flagnum, I wouldn't have).

How do you figure that? You would have either grabbed the flag, turned around and shot(and killed, most likely) the guy that had your flag. Or you would have killed him and then grabbed the flag. Nothing would have changed.

I knew I had a Sniper. With the lack of dropping, I would be giving up my best tool for killing the other player, which isn't my preferred playstyle.

It feels like I'm being forced into a situation that I don't want to be in. I can count multiple times in more Rumble Pit styled games where I'm forced to go one way to avoid a danger. I had multiple tools to combat it once I got there. Changing it into a flag game, if I'm forced to go one way, now I only have one option. Is it now my fault for picking up the flag and attempting to survive?

Why cant new flag be a variant that coexists with classic flag? Why does it have to be one or the other?

Watch TV on an exercise bike, not a couch. Thats my advice.

This is how I play Reach. Seriously. 648 calories if I am losing, 590 if I am winning, true story.

ALSO: YES YOU CAN THROW THE BALL IF YOU ARE A PASSENGER - PREDICTABLY AND PROPERLY, USING GRENADE TRIGGER.

Look at Reach. Look how messy things get giving people the choice between old and new. They tried to please everyone and ended up with far too many playlists, each with different settings.

God damn, Frankie. I wish I could burn significant calories playing Reach.

SkinnyGAF ftw.

Yes. Yes it is. You chose to assume that role.

Once a week? If you really want to gain weight, try 5 or 6 times a week(it's a lot but worth it) and get a individual workout for each muscle group. That way your exercise specific muscles each day and the progress is faster/better.

I'm not an expert but I don't think a 6 day bodypart split is optimal for a natural trainer looking to gain mass. Good chance of over-training, plus probably not enough compound work.

My professor set up a treadmill in his office so while he walks on it while doing work on the computer, which I thought was really cool.

Or do what my friend has dubbed the master chief workout. Do pushups, situps, or something between Halo games. I even did this thing where id do a push up for every kill I got.

Whoah chill pill my friend.
I was using Reach's poor matchmaking as an example of how skill can be used in matchmaking, but ineffectively.

I agree with you, skill does not weigh enough in Reach MM.
And I don't think anyone here will disagree with that.

Can you CATCH as a passenger??

plz plz plz plz

But I'm a BEAST

Maybe I explained it wrong. 3 different workouts, 2 muscle groups per workout would be nice though. That's what I did and became a god among nerds.
not really =(

I dont even want a playlist, just the right options to allow classic CTF in customs.

Awesome news that oddball catch works in vehicles!

Got rid of my computer chair and sit on an exercise ball now at the computer/xbox. Its been tought getting used to it but they say its better.
