Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Man, I'm totally stoked that you fellow Halo-Gaffers got into the F&F! Me, I'd love to get in. But I'm working right now and don't have the time to pursue codes.

So, I'll join you peeps next week with my ODST disk! Monday can't get here soon enough!
 
I thought that Invisibility was going to be my least used armor ability, but it is fucking BOSS. Slipping in and out of invisibility while engaging an enemy gets them everytime.


COVVY SLAYER IS SOOOOOOOO GOOD. Playing as an Elite makes me so excited for Invasion mode!

At first I thought it was cool, but after a few games I am pretty blown away. It plays really, really well, and it's a lot of fun.

Jaggies are still noticeable, but not to the same extent. There are a lot of subtle effects, particularly the motion blur, that help things along. Model details and animations are much improved. Partly helped by the seemingly improved netcode, you see fewer wonky physics reactions.

Sword Base is underwhelming (in every respect), Powerhouse is beautiful (and plays great).

Impressed by how quickly and smoothly everything loads.
 
I tried to grab another code via US ip adress and a new MSN passport but it won't actually met me sign up now, no idea why i'm doing everything right :lol
 
First impressions from the Halo: Reach Beta, by MagniHarvald

The Good

-DMR, NR are super awesome. Seriously.
-Sniper Rifle takes a bit more skill, much welcome.
-The sound design is excellent.
-Sprint and Camo are nice.
-Hit detection seems better.
-Melee lunge is more or less gone, great.
-Netcode seems better.
-Fall damage!
-Health packs!

The So-so

-The Pistol is still a far cry from Halo 1, I don't see it beating a DMR or NR very often. The bloom is much greater.
-The maps are alright.
-Haven't had much time with the Jetpack to decide anything.
-Grenades are way more powerful, even more 'nade spam than in H3.
-Tough to see the armor pop compared to the vidocs IMO.

The Bad
-Only one game without a quitter. WTF Halo players. Fuck you all (except for the ones I like :lol)
-Armor lock. GTFO of my Halo game.
-Spawns. Still as shitty as in H3..
-One hit kill with Objectives in Team games is dumb.
-AR starts in Reach is still AR starts. I don't care if I don't get an AA and no grenades, just let me spawn with a DMR or a NR!
-Jumps. OK, we're Spartan-IIIs, but still, the jumps are way smaller than they used to be..


Ideas for the full game
-When you die, the callout shouldn't disappear!
 
I really really need a beta code. Please would anyone PM me one out of the goodness of their hearts? I've been waiting on twitter and various websites for 5 hours!

Thanks, sounds good. Sword base is that vertical map? I never liked it from the screenshots and videos as it seemed a bit bleak and too narrow.

I haven't had any aliasing problem; no jaggies to cause an eyesore. ;)

Just the overall impression compared to Halo 3. Cleaner, smoother, more detailed? Shake answered a good junk of that and I am pleased so fear.
 
Do we know if we will need to start up the beta from the ODST disc or will that be just a download the beta through odst and then start it from dashboard like a separate download?
 
I'm not sure im really a fan of the motion blur...maybe it will grow on me.

Maybe I just need to get use to it but it seems kind of hard to me to tell when you're getting hit/when youre hitting someone else

After you take the quiz you have to go back to the main page that got you to the quiz pop-up, then go to the "Reach HQ" and enter your e-mail again. It doesn't automatically send you the code after you complete the quiz.

The Pistol is a "far cry" from Halo 1's model, but it still isn't a bad weapon. The AR is much improved and better than the crud from 3.

Do you know if the motion blur can be toggled on and off in the options menu? I think some games do that

Not jaw dropping, but definitely an improvement. Overall the details on everything look a lot better, but it still "looks" like Halo, which is a good thing.
 
Bungie needs to turn off the motion blur... Makes the game look like it's running about 5fps. Make it look better or turn it off.

Just stand still and hit melee... Looks awful.

Knee-jerk reactions:

-Something feels wrong with combat. Shooting an enemy doesn't feel satisfying. There's no "oomph" to the gunplay.
-The motion blur is distracting and damages image quality. I don't like the implementation.
-It looks...like Halo 3. Sorry, I know a lot of people disagree with this.

The most important comment, however: i'm having a lot of fun

I was getting the same error, but the one in the home page of the site seems to work.

Just click on the MS Expert Zone banner on the top to reach it and then click learn more on the Halo ad.
 
I wish ExpertZone had given me some warning, ANY kind of warning that they were going to do this so I'd have done it ahead of time.

Yeah. It feels a little uninspired, visually, and too open at times, especially in the atrium. Also, you often feel like you've spawned with the wrong equipment: sometimes you want Sprint, sometimes you want Jetpack. You feel limited in how you're getting around; maybe that will change as I learn the distance between things and how to reach them best.

We played a game of 1-Flag on it and it was a 0-0 tie because we spent so long trying to work out how to get back to score.
 
Motion blur seems a little over done. When I freeze frame and zoom into my character in theater mode it looks like the top half of my spartan and AR are having a seizure. Aliasing indoors is pretty bad.
