Halo: Reach Beta Thread

this thread has become slightly schizophrenic!!

for every post sprouting "Haloz is dooooomed", the next is singing Reach's praises.
makes for some entertaining reading...

Are there any Aussies in the F&F? I'd like to hear their opinions on lag, ping, load times etc.

Quick first impression are:
Feels so different yet familiar
DMR feels like it will need real skill to master, same with Pistol.

Grenade Spam can get a bvit much but these are smaller maps.
1 Flag CTF on Sword base is so confusing and need jetpack, on Powerhouse it is so much fun.
Need to play Covie Slayer.

I have to pull that off. It's too good.

Still looking through the videos on bnet. First glitch I've seen.

Now that is just hilarious.
 
The combination of the grenades' increased power and the fact that they are really, really not as scarce as Bungie made out means that, yeah, I would say they are overpowered. Not awfully so, but they need a tweak.

Focus rifle is fine on Powerhouse but I could see it being an nightmare on more open maps with clearer lines of sight. If it was on Sword Base, I'd probably be screaming about it.

Incidentally, for whatever reason, I am miles better with the Reach sniper than the Halo 3 one.

That could be down to the netcode or the general experience I had over ~30 games last night, which was smooth as butter, with hitches I could count on one hand.

And the speed at which you get into games is frankly astonishing to me.

K/D after 33 games is 1.39, but I feel like it's rising as I get a handle on things.
 
That's why after a day or two more of playing the hell out of this I'm gonna hang back until the other game modes get rolled out. There's only so much of the same stuff you can handle, really.
 
The more I play the less I can can be bothered 'trying' and the more im just jetpacking around. This isnt a good thing. The combat just feels so flat to me, the pistol and DMR just arent very fun to use and I havent had a Halo 3 style 'BR battle' yet.

I also wish there were more DMR starts, and maybe even Sniper starts, the AR/ Pistol combo is just not much fun. I like to think the game feels more like Halo 2 in nature - but im not sure, its a pretty alien experiance.

Hi HsitH. Good game. Finally got my fucking mic working, woot!

Game is great. Needs some obvious tweaks, but that's about it. Fuck the haters per usual.
 
9 hours of games, games, psssh, more games. Played 65 and we won 55. Grenades are too powerful. :( Pistol is the new go-to weapon and it's pretty much near perfect IMO. Still unsure about the DMR. The Hammer is friggin overpowered as hell, and especially in Covy Slayer: roll, roll, SWING.

Wow am I tired. Gonna get some much needed sleep.
 
Damn, everyone already seems to be better than me, can't get a kill anymore. Ok, to be fair to myself it's pretty late over here and I've been playing for over 14 hours, time to get some sleep, maybe I'll start getting some kills again tomorrow.

Is there a way to still play it before 3 may, without having a beta code.
Like if someone would upload the reach file on the web. and users can download it and transfer to the xbox360s. Or isn't that a solution?

I'm assuming the beta is linked to people's gamertags, so people can't upload them like they do with demos.
 
Ok so I've put in a ton of fucking games today. I'm really really liking Reach. I do have a few issues with the game so far though. Nothing major, thankfully. I'm digging the new weapons. As soon as I spawn I'm hitting Y. The AR is almost a throw away weapon, unfortunately. I'm also beginning to find a rhythm with the Magnum and DMR and how to time my shots based on the range. It's taken a bunch of games but I'm starting to get some solid 5 shots in with both guns.

The Pro Pipe is indeed a pro pipe So much fun to use, really tough.

I do have some issues with the beta so far but I'd like to think about them more and development them so that I can explain them clearly. It's mostly about how the things in the game are translated to the player on screen.

I'm liking the Armor abilities so far, all of them. I like how certain situations in the middle of the match call for different loadouts.

Ummmm, Stockpile is fucking awesome. FFA Headhunts is meh.I might enjoy it more now that I'm better than when I first started though. Slayer Pro is awesome of course.

OHhhhhhh and Flag Juggling is definitely in. And don't worry, the announcer doesn't say flag taken flag dropped over and over. I know it's such a HUGE deal to some of you lol. Flag juggling now though is tough. You gotta pick your lines if it's regular CTF. Try to toss the flags at about a 45 degree angle if 0 degrees is looking straight. Up hill, there's really no point in flag juggling, downhill though there is a difference. Stockpile with Sprint is the way to go. Right Bumper, look up, right trigger, look forward, activate Sprint, right bumper, look up, right trigger...that shit is siiiiick.

Also WTF is with the flag pole stopping my grenades and sniper shots? lol

Finally, sorry to those who sent me invites to games tonight and I didn't reply. I had notifications turned off because I was getting a fuck ton of messages while streaming and so I didn't see any of them. :/

Sprint is fast becoming my favorite armor skill.

I really hope more playlists get added soon. Grab Bag is boring the shit out of me.

When/where do you use it? I haven't found any dynamite situations yet to use sprint in the way I have Armor Lock (dropping into armor lock next to a flag is awesome, because everyone just STOPS and thinks they have to do something instead of just run and take the flag).

Why isn't BXR back in the game I told Bungie specifically I would cancel my preorder if they didn't put the best Halo feature ever, BXR is the best.

I'm writing a term paper right now while playing intermittent rounds of Reach. I need to make this brief, but it had to be said (again). The way the game presents objectives is in need of some serious repair. I am not an inexperienced gamer by any means. But, there were a lot of times tonight where I would grab a flag in stockpile, and then spin around looking in a full sphere (up, down, behind me, etc) and thought to myself, "Where do I take this thing?" And this was probably my 5th time playing stockpile on Sword Base. Seemingly, the only time I knew where to go was when I started at the flag base, went to a flag, and then literally retraced my steps back. (EDIT: also, I was guilty a few times taking the flag to the wrong base)

Another problem on a related note: When playing crazy king on the outdoor map (name escapes me), there were numerous times during the match when the hill would move, and once again I would look in a full sphere and not have any idea where the hill went. Of course in that map, I would simply fly up in the jet pack or run aimlessly around things til I saw it, but I was lost. This never seemed to be a problem in previous Halo's.

One last thing, this melee system is killing me! (quite literally) It just doesnt feel the same, to unload a magazine of assualt rifle spit wads (that is how much damage it does) into someone, followed by a brisk butt stroke, only to have them not drop. Something about the melee combat does not 'feel' right. I can't put my finger on it, and I'm not talking about the whole 'will only drop shields' thing. I don't know.

On a pleasant note: I began grinning ear to ear thinking about a Hang em High remake map with the jet pack in it. Please Bungie, make it so. (Just think, you could jet pack to the sniper rifle and also survive long jumps with a short burst at the end)

That's the thing, I think it is the only dropping shields bit that's getting you. I've done the same thing a bunch of times, where I'd feel like "Yeah I should punch him now" and since my timing's off, all I do is take his shields from 5% to 0%. What feels different, I guess, is that it's not as reliable of a finisher when you get up close as it used to be.

As for the objectives, I have to agree. It feels like just about everything is "blue is always blue team, red is always red team" rather than "blue for us, red for them", but the 1-flag stuff seems to lose track of that and combine them.

That is what happened at the end of the game, but it does make it a bit junk. I was excited to clutch the tie. I hope it's not a return to Halo 2, where red team always gets the win if the game is a tie :D
 
If anything you'd think the tiebreaker would be who scored MORE points to tie it, if they were going to tiebreak that at all. Probably just a goof, though.

Well I guess we can agree to disagree because while you think it's a cheap exploit and retarded, I think it's an integral part of CTF in Halo and has been for years. Oh well.

The netcode seems to have been tightened up considerably. After playing with S players on Halo 3 for years the difference, for someone from UK/Ireland is very noticeable.
 
Hmm I cant put my finger on it, but Reach seems 'stricter' than 3. On Reach im maybe saving videos of assassinations, but on 3 there were so many unscripted cool things that could happen, on 3 I would save videos loads, on Reach less cool shit seems to happen, and the cool stuff that does happen seems to be like assassinations. hmm im not sure if I just havent played enough to experience it, I still cant get to grips with the new feel of the game.

Meh maybe I should wait for Invasion to decide.
