Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Speaking of which, can someone with render minutes rip "Super Awesome Spawns" out of my file share...

...because I think I need people to see this.
Hmm, pretty damning, but a really likely fix for final.

Some thoughts on Active Roster.

Things I dislike:
- Was/is kinda confusing.
- There is a lot going on. Gonna take some time to get used to.
- I'm not too crazy about the whole screen shifting to the right when I go over someone's name, not to mention the first-hand look at the Spartan's ballsack. It's like I'm a grunt staring at a spartan's crotch and everything else is up in the air above it.
- When I select "Join Party" I would like to know whether I'm actually joining their party or I am being placed in a queue. Pretty much everytime I hit Join Party and I was placed in a queue, I said F* That and cancelled the queue and started my own match.
- It was promoted as "We pretty much went back to Halo 2's friends list" but I cannot see exactly who is in the party. I know which ones of my friends are in the same party, but when I see 3 friends in a party and it says 4/4 I know they're playing with someone else. I want to know who that other person is.
- Where is a players service record?

Things I like:
- How players emblem shows behind their Spartan. Awesome
- Compared to Halo 2's, I like that it only shows my friends playing Reach.

It's an option for Covy Slayer.

Ah alright thanks, I have yet to play that. Heard dash is awesome.

I'm starting to get a get flow good for Sword Base, mentally. If i'm trying to get somewhere, I no longer get lost or need to stop and momentarilly map out where i'm going. A LOT of people still haven't gotten the hang of it though. I just finished a Crazy King match, and I had roughly 70% of the points because my teamates just couldn't get to the hill.

You know what would be ace?

If Firefight mode had a version that was like L4D versus mode with the Covie team spawning as Elites, Brute Chieftains, Hunters, Jetpack Brutes etc.

Now that would be properly fun.

Urk forgive me if this has been answered but will you guys be applying tweaks to things in the beta during its run, or will it be more collection of things that need to be fixed, and then do it after?

The latter. Tweaking any fundamentals would be problematic on a number of fronts, most importantly data gathering and analysis.

Are these things or changes usually announced or flagged in a Weekly Update or something similar?

I have terrible allergies, so last night I kept waking up due to them. Every time I did, I had a craving to hop right back into the beta :lol

I'm hopping on right now, but have no friends who have the beta. If someone wants to play right now, add me and we can play some games together.

Most of the glitches I've found have to do with Theater. Rendering clips gives you no reticle, and the buttons displayed in clips are always the ones from the Default Button Layout, regardless of which Layout you're using.

God I'm getting old. I feel wiped out from playing yesterday, my reaction time and aim has been reduced to that of a giant turd.

Any UK or euro player currently feel that we keep getting american hosts? In so many games and the swat game I just played there is an obvious delay between landing the killing shot and seeing them die, like the ping is 200ms or something high.

Why oh WHY can't us euro brothers be grouped together? maybe the beta is lacking users currently but as others have said in this thread, that green ping bar is a lie, full green = 200ms is how it feels currently.

This is probably why I feel like i'm not getting kills with the needle rifle or losing firefights with others, I have shitty fucking ping.

I've been checking the connections for the past few games, and I always end up with Euro hosts with PGC on.

As I said above, the latency is essentially so low that it's like constantly playing on host for me. Maybe something's up with your connection?

I played it for 3 hours straight this morning and the Jet pack is awesome been using all matches. I wasn't using the pistol at first and I was getting my ass kicked, and after I started using it more I felt like its more useful than BR.

I am loving the weapon balance right now, really feels good. Everything does feel situational like Sage was shooting for, have to carry something for short range, they something for medium to long and switch between the two in the right situation.

Only thing that seems like it needs tweaking is the overall power of grenades, they seem a little overpowered, IMO.

I really have to sit down with the pistol this afternoon and see if I can get the rythym down cause I was getting destroyed with it last night.

Yeah everything I thought would be over powered - the DMR, the Beam Rifle - wasn't. I should say that while I've ripped on how the weapons feel, I really dig the new AR and the Plasma Repeater. Plasma Pistol feels good too.

I'm going to work on the pistol tonight, see if I can learn to get a feel for it.

I think the core of the grenade blast could be the same, but it needs to be graduated down much further; as it is, you don't even have to be all that accurate to strip shields or blow dudes up completely.

Are we gonna see a change to the loadouts as the days progress?

All AR starts is not what I was looking forward to, especially after seeing all the different example loadouts from the screenshots. Please tell me grab bag will have different loadouts?

Edit: And as far as the pistol goes, I suck with it. Arena is gonna suck if i cant get the rhythm down :lol

DMR starts don't really make sense considering the size of the two maps; they're definitely "pistol range", though I can't hit anything with it. On both Boneyard (Invasion) and Overlook (Generator Defense) there's DMR-start Load Outs.

For all you SWAT lovers in Reach. Swith over to the Pistol as soon as you spawn. Not sure if its by design but the DMR even at closed boom is not accurate. :(

This game is going to have an absolutely huge skill gap.

I am loving these maps, Sword Base plays like a classic CE map and Power House plays like a Halo 2 map that goes more so when playing as elites. So far haven't had one problem with these maps.

I played it reach over a friends house, and i agree that the grenades are a little powerful. I seem to have more WTF moments in reach than in any other halo game. IDK what it is but sometimes it seems like i die way to quickly or out or nowhere. The needle rifle and the plasma repeater need a boosting IMO. Also, the elites heads are soo wide!! i dont like their new look.

And yet there's Nerfle starts for Covie Slayer. I wouldn't mind having DMR starts as an option for Spartans.

I can sense this also. People are going to destroy with the DMR and Needle Rifle and everyone else is gonna be left spraying with AR and tossing grenades.

Im not talking about DMR only starts. I mean like the different load outs with the shotgun and pro pipe.

Either they havent rolled then out yet or it must not balance for these 2 maps. I just remember seeing it in screengrabs and getting really excited.

Armour Lock yo!

Yeah, grenades are powerful but at least they are useful now. Halo 3 nerfed them enough to be pointless.

:lol :lol :lol :lol

I'm sorry, sprint is where it's at, I've tried them all, and sprint is my favorite and easily my most used.

I'm into the less bouncy greandes. I feel like I can anticipate where they'll hit a lot better than before. I was always a plasma man, but Frags work with me now.

Oh and the first time I used the shotgun made me gasp and stop for a minute. The dude came around the corner right after I picked it up, and the subsequent booming crack made the dude just crumple in front of me. It was so satisfying.

I noticed this, the pistol seems to be more accurate, very disappointing.

See im not sure the skill gap has been done in a good way, the pistol has a HUGE amount of bloom which means if you want accuracy, it has a pretty slow RoF, it also has a very shallow clip. You can kill 1 person but anyone else and your screwed.

It seems like it will be harder to go on insane killing spree's BR style, but it almost feels like I dont have the tools for the job. The DMR seems to counter this but still takes a long time to kill people. Theres no more 1 man army stuff, thats for sure. The game will work extremely well at high levels with friends, but jumping into matchmaking alone will be torture.

Headhunter is more aggravating than it is fun. And Stockpile is boring.

Not to mention they need to fix the whole stockpile color mismatch issue. Last night I spent a good 2 minutes trying to decide where to take our red team's flag. To the blue marker (our base) or the red one (Enemy base) :lol

Invite me when you're on. :)

I don't like the way your Elite character looks in the post-game report: he looks weird.

So, how do you customise your Elite character?
You can't.

I have to agree with Ghaleon here. The grenade damage when you're right on top of it seems fine, but the damage when you're nearby feels a bit too extreme. Though it is quite fun when you nail a bunch of people standing together with one :D

So far the Assault Rifle and Plasma Repeater haven't done much for me, but I'll try to get some more use with them.

The Shotgun doesn't feel that powerful though, at least from my initial impressions.

Really cant wait for beta now.

That bad spawn from Shake's clip happened to me aswell, same exact spot! Was really annoying, I was sniping the guys defending the flag, next thing I know ive been assassinated. When I watched it in theatre mode it turned out he spawned literally right behind me :lol

P.S. I LOVE headhunter!

Shotgun melee is still really brutal. From close range its a beast and from medium range can down someone without shields.

What if they just changed the amount of grenades to start with? Lower it from 2 grenades per spawn to 1?

I kind of like these powered up grenades, but I feel like they're just too easy to throw out and hope for kills with. With the amount of people dieing and the amount on the map I never feel like I'll go long without having another grenade to blow someone up with.

Yeah the spawns that I've encountered so far have been terrible. Like Modern Warfare 2 terrible. I've been spawned on by 2 or more enemies like 5 times so far in the 20 or so matches that I've played.

Looking forward to those Loadouts where people spawn with three frags! Shock and awe!

Note: this is sarcasm. If Bungie employees somewhere are taking stock of the frag grenades, put another tick in the "nerf" column.

Loving the game, and even wrote some impression here: http://provenescapades.tumblr.com/post/561100219/halo-reach-beta-impressions

I'm a more casual and split screen player, and I mostly raged on that and grenades. But I am having a lot of fun. I need more GAFfers on my Friends list it seems though. GT: KniveSmith

The powers are all good, although Armor Lock feels like the most utility/weakest. Weapon wise, everything is great, except for the fact that after a point last night I was meeting people that showed me that the Pistol was more powerful than the AR at close-to-midrange, since the reticule bloom for it won't be a problem at all and you can just fire fast. It was aggravating.

Also, can someone please tell me where I can see commendations in game? Or what they're for? From checking my Reach stats on bungie.net, I get the idea they're skill ranks for doing things like multi-kills, objective kills, heashots, etc. Basically, for collecting medals. I'm rank two on Assistant and rank one on half of the rest.

I thought i would be using active camo a lot more but the sounbd going out and the crazy motion detector kinda suck.

Yeah I've definitley had a bunch of kills with random grenades.
