Halo: Reach Beta Thread

First post (I think) since I started playing :lol

Reach is SO much fun. Everything looks, feels, and sounds really nice. Some of my halo-hating friends were even impressed by all the sound effects, especially the muffling of sound when a grenade goes off nearby, and the camo sounds. I'll probably do a writeup later on my lil' ol' blog that's more in-depth :D I can't wait for Arena though! That'll be awesome.

Oh and yeah, some people are insanely good already. And taking the game way too seriously as well :/

I only have 2 problems with this game.

1) Frags are insane.

2) Im not digging the Melee + New Shield mechanic. Sometimes your better off back peddleing and shooting until their shield is down.

Want a good tip that will save you headaches and everyone a whole lot of grief.

Go into the audio settings in the main menu and turn on the option that mutes everyone that isn't in your party or on your team. No more trash talking!

argh... I'm a little concerned about this. I haven't played Halo 3 online for a couple years. I'm afraid I'll be completely out classed in Reach and that the game has passed me by at this point.

For the Melee mechanic, I believe that's how it was designed, to make you backpedal more. What pisses me off is that I'm to a point where it often seems better to charge and melee anyway.

The Beta will help you with that but the current maps are really small. Its only natural to feel ganked at every turn. :lol

Once Invasion rolls out (har har) then the map size will make things a little better.

Hey guys, Halo Waypoint would like your cool clips! If something awesome happens during a game, clip it out in Theater mode and recommend the film clip to my gamertag (Cocopjojo). Leave two to three seconds before the beginning of the action and after the end of the scene so we can properly transition.

If they're cool enough, we'll put 'em up on Waypoint next week.

Don't worry about it. There's all skill levels (or, in my case, lack thereof) in the Beta. Just have fun with it and try and stick close to a good teammate. :D

Alright. I don't like Sword Base. At all. The hallways are too narrow, making the already very powerful grenades even more deadly, and I just don't like the layout and the way it plays. I feel like I should be able to visit each floor of each side without having to cross to the other side.

Will do. :)

Oh, I forgot to mention:

You can spawn on your teammates in Objective games.

In a lot of gametypes, especially CTF, you auto spawn at your "starting base". However, while respawning, if you quickly choose a loadout or cancel the menu, you can use the Dpad to cycle through the players and bring you to them. You only have four seconds to do this and any callouts you have planned, though.

I feel like I should be able to get from the bottom floor to the top floor of both sides without having to go to the other side.

You can though, using the right elevator lifts. Them being deactivated make 1 Flag CTF a hell of a time.

Sweet. I've got a cool one of me and Dax facing off...with Armor Lock :lol :lol :lol

And a Killimanjaro in Juggernaut!

They really need to stop auto spawning for games. Its annoying to look through the Loadouts, only to spawn without picking what you want! :lol

We should play together some time.

I don't think it will be a problem when the beta officially launches. Right now the people who got in are mostly the hardcore players who either griefed the system or hit f5 a bunch of times during some type of contest.

You will be fine in a few days.

Well I'll be in the Beta on Monday so hopefully there will be an influx of rusty old players and noobs to help me ease back into the groove.

Tell me MOAR!

AA?

Lighting?

Textures?

Moar moar moar!

At first i was surprised at the textures on your arms. the first time I melee'd i was shocked at how detailed and dirty your arms are.

The lighting and environment are probably what you would expect. Overall The game feels extremely smooth.

AA...hrmm...still there but not as bad as H3. Somewhat sorted by the Motion-blur.

Lighting much better. Explosions all look awesome.

Some low res textures indoors but, again, better than H3. Not really looked too close to textures, to scared about getting jumped on. :lol

Needle Rifle explosion is massive and awesome. :D

Jetpack says hi.

Where do you go to recommend the clip? Can't seem to find the option.

So played about 4-5 hours yesterday. Super fun.

A lot of the weirdness is getting use to the armor abilities. From my perspective, the better you get at correctly utilizing them, the more fun the game becomes. It's pretty difficult to adjust when you first start playing.

My only negative note is that I wish people would vote for slayer/swat more often. I love stockpile, but playing that or 1 flag CTF 7 games in a row is a bit much for me, I just wanna kill people :D

Fuck the balancing... just tell me how it looks? Is it beautiful?

We MUST know!!!

Both the graphics and sound are underwhelming for a AAA title like this one. Not once did I stop to awe the graphics and the sounds make my DT770s seem like 30 dollar cans. The sound effects at times don't even make sense - like when a grenade is thrown 40 feet away from you and it makes this awful and inappropriately loud canned sound to represent that, but when a bullet whizs by your ear, you can barely hear it. Almost all of the guns still have that "pew pew pew" sound. You also get little response to when you're hitting somebody. The most amount of audible feedback you are going to get is the sound of bullets hitting your opponents shield. That's right, the biggest sound you will hear when it comes to bullet feedback is the sound that you aren't hurting your opponent.

Yes, the graphics and sound are better than Halo 3's. For a AAA 2010 exclusive title, it's completely underwhelming.

Yeah, I was having the same problem last night. :lol

Either that, or I was playing toward the actual objective when everyone else on my team was just playing "slayer." Ugh.

One thing I have to say I wish for, When you're respawning, Control Stick should be for Loadouts, and Dpad should be for player cameras. I want to be able to see what's going on before I decide to change loadout.

Learn what a beta is.
Game will not look any better, only will crash less and be more reliable.
It might have more features and tweaks, but few more.

The last 6 months of a game's production is all about stability.

You sound a bit harsh compared to what everyone else is saying, but I actually DO agree that the weapons don't sound good enough. The AR, DMR, Sniper, and Pistol in particular are not nearly loud or meaty enough. The Grenades, grenade Launcher, and Rocket Launcher sound good to me, but everything else could be beefed up a lot.

I played a good 4 hours last night which I think is enough to formulate some basic impressions so here goes:

Overall Gameplay/Controls: The melee switch took a bit to get used too, but after about 15 games it felt perfect, I tried out Recon, but the new default just feels right given the new elements. Jumping is toned down which I like, especially given fall damage is back, the more controlled jump will help me reign in my old H3 habit of jumping with reckless abandon even though I was still jumping to my death all night.

Weapons/Weapon Balance: Pistol would be a fantastic weapon with a larger clip. It's firing rate and zoom have it feeling like the perfect love child between the CE and H3 pistols. Covie weapons are badass across the board, and the grenades! Oh I fucking love the grenades. They finally have some teeth, but I fear they are going to be nerfed. And speaking of nerfed, I feel like the DMR isn't nearly as strong as Bungie had been describing it leading up the the beta. I'm still a novice with it, but even knowing that it feels like it needs a power increase given its range. The only weapon I haven't gotten my hands on yet is the grenade launcher. that will happen tonight.

Armor Abilities: I love sprint, I love invis, Armor Lock feels a bit touchy and I've yet to see anybody (including me) really use it to it's full potential yet. I wasn't sold on the jetpacks until an awesome game of Covie slayer on Sword Base. I feared it would completely F up the balance of the game, but all the armor abilities have something about them that keeps their power in check.

Maps: Only 2 right now. Powerhouse has one of the more unique layouts on any Halo map even though it's tone is reminiscent of High Ground. Sword Base is Prisoner+Boarding Action+The last scene in Empire Strikes Back. It took a little getting used to and I didn't really dig it until I began mastering the jetpack.

Overall, I absolutely love it. It's a great mix of the Halo we all know and love with brand new elements that also completely change the game. There are no doubt some adjustments that need to be made (pistol clip size, DMR strength etc..) but that's the beauty of a beta as it allows the glaring issues to present themselves.

Now bring on arena and invasion. I want to see how the new fuck-awesome grenades play with a warthog.

Oh and one last thing, does anyone else think the aiming reticle is too light? I completely lose it sometimes while firing at enemies. I've adjusted my tv settings to no avail. Am I crazy ?

Also, post game carnage needs some more meat to it, right now it seems a little basic, I would like to know how many of each medal I had, and maybe throw in a few more stats or something.

Some of the alien sound effects sound decent. The funkier, the harder it is to tell about sound quality. The sound's creativity masks and possibly overcomes everything else. A lot of the sounds from the "classic" weaponry sound nearly identical from halo 3 still. Those are the ones that are really weak to me. Everyone knows what a pistol sounds like and how its sound ricochets off the walls and into your ears. So, critiquing a pistol sound effect is a lot easier than a needler rifle or whatever.

It doesn't help that you start off with the AR and pistol and grenades, so that's what you hear the most. You hear that canned "grenade is somewhere near you" sound ALL the time. It can be tossed behind two walls and you'll still hear it like it's behind you.

Are they?

Which multiplayer shooter looks undeniably better than what we've seen on Reach?

My answer is none.

I dunno... Sound design in BFBC:2 is absolutely awesome and is much better than what we have in Reach imho.

Admittedly we haven't had vehicles in play yet, and a good deal of BFBC:2's awesome sound i s from the vehicles themselves.

EDIT: Sorry, misread that. Visually, Reach rocks, absolutely.

I think the Sniper sounds fine.

Is anyone else completley underwelhmed by the Focus Rifle?

i'm really surprised at all of the negative reactions here
though i guess i shouldn't be
. i guess i'm even more intrigued to check out the beta now.

I agree with most of the people here when it comes to sound. A few of the weapons just don't sound all that powerful.

I'm look at you pistol and assault rifle.
