Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I'm really starting to understand why BUNGIE made the tweaks to the melee mechanics. I have never been good at gun fights so I was forced to always hang back and then jump in late when everyone's shields were down and finish them off. I could rack up a lot of kills just by chucking grenades and melee everything that moved. You leave the melee as it was and throw in the armor abilities and you have the unskilled noob's ultimate exploit.

REACH has forced me to engage in fights and take people down with actual weapons. They've shifted the advantage away from the unskilled players like me and given it to those that know when, how and what to engage the enemy with.

With that said you can see why I would be angry and frustrated over the changes, but I can see why they did change it. It is still very frustrating at times but I'm starting to show flashes of skill and its fun as hell when I get it right. Just got to continue getting better.

nevermind, you guys must be getting annoyed by my posts by now. Since you guys like it all, I guess Bungie did a good job. I'll try to leave my ranting out of halogaf then.

*a couple of games later*

I'm done with this crap, waiting for Arena's Slayer Classic and Slayer Pro now.

I have no problem with sprint or even invisibility, but the stupid jet pack and armor lock are driving me completely insane. I probably wouldn't mind them in big team games, but right now, I really want to kill people who only use jet packs or armor lock, I'm getting really frustrated with that junk.

Hey, someone with a worse K/D than me! I feel slightly less bad now!

K/D doesnt mean squat unless all you play is Slayer matches. Playing CTF and Stockpile ive died TONS by securing flags and removing from enemy locations. As long as you win the game K/D is meaningless unless all you play is Deatmatch

Do you just want Halo 3.5 or what?
People are going to be upset if things stay the same, some people are going to be upset if they change too much. Me, I'm fine with most of the additions and expansions to the game, it's the core of the combat that no longer resembles Halo that I'm bummed with. It's like Shadowrun: Halo Edition more than a new Halo game. I'm learning to like the game for being that. But disappointment with the game is understandable - as is delight.

Frankly the "did you want Halo 3.5" theme I've seen running through the thread is idiotic.

Whoever came up with "bloom" to describe the spread of fire is the stupidest person ever.

Bloom doesn't describe the spread of fire. It describes the visual bloom. Of the reticule.

Stockpile is the only game mode I've played and all I do is try and get flags so maybe that it explains it (yeah, lets go with that).

Was going to try and jump back in this week to work on my skills before beta. Looks like I am going in cold tomorrow :lol

also probably switching to bumper jumper as it seems like it will have more utility in reach.

I am going to get pwned :lol

Oh I have no problem with people being disappointed with it. A game isn't going to fit everyone's desires. No one game ever does. How does the core of the combat no longer resemble Halo? Besides the AA which are brand new of course.

I would really recommend not switching to BJ in Reach. To make full use of AA you need to have them available on a bumper. I began playing the beta with BJ as that's what I'm accustomed to, but I made the switch from BJ to default yesterday. It was rough going for a few games but it was definitely worth it. I switched between Halo 3 (BJ) and Reach (default) today without any problems. Probably because the 2 games play so differently.

This is why flags interacting with projectiles is awesome- I'm on high bridge with the Plasma Launcher, lock on to a guy running for a flag. I let the grenade fly just as he grabs the flag. The nade misses, but sticks the very top of the flag pole :lol Guy take a few steps holding a glowing blue stick, then explodes.

I was like: waitwhat?

Can't render it sadly :(

I didn't do it, but it's rendered now.

GUY ABOVE DID!

Actually no, keep ranting. Want to read good reasons why this game is bad and not rage. Channel your rage.

Love the description. Shadowrun blew Halo out of the water.

I initially started on BJ, switched to default for a while, then switched back to BJ. The only AA I ever use is sprint (which can be toggled) anyway.

Idk if it has been answerd already, but will the Arena go online by the same time of the Beta or will it go live early? I'm dying to try it out.

I wouldn't expect it until the "official" beta goes up.

Lately the timing of stuff has been lazy, first with OG XBOX Live not going down at midnight PST and the Beta for Reach not going up at Midnight PST.

Yep.. it sucks. I just told a couple of friends that were planing to wait until midnight that it will only be available noon tomorrow and they were so disappointed. :lol

You're right, sprint and invis work fine with toggle. I still found sprint to be a bit awkward on X. I haven't even tried jetpacking but I've used armor lock a few times and thought it was useful enough to give default a go. I think jumping has taken a bit of a backseat so the only time I'll miss having jump on the bumper is in a 1v1 DMR/Pistol fight. Just have to get better at strafing.

Armor lock saved the day here:

That's the approach I've taken. It seems I'm in the minority so I've decided to keep my mouth shut.

Yeah, that's pretty much the reason why I switched back. Now, in SWAT, I jump around like a madman.

I disagree entirely - I didn't care for that game at all - but you just nailed the point I was trying to make, so thanks. :D

I'll pipe down for a while and stop shitting up the thread, which I've done too much, and let the influx of everyone that gets their hands on the Beta tomorrow go at it without my bitching. I'm curious how the breakdown is; I'm sure some die-hards will be disappointed, but many who weren't that into Halo before will really appreciate the scale of the changes. Similar to what's going on now. Should be a fun couple of weeks.

In the meantime, I'm ready for Invasion; I'm kind of burned out on the current maps a bit. I have a feeling once Invasion hits, I'll be living on that playlist.

Playing BJ in Halo 3 got me used to having melee on the right bumper, so default doesn't really bother me. Also, I love the jetpack, and you definitely need AA on a bumper for that. My ideal layout would be LB: jump, RB: AA, and the rest not really mattering.

Anyway, the diminished jump makes it not as important where jump is. Default is fine for me.

Couldn't agree more, well said. Kinda disappointed with some of the changes they have implemented making the game feel more like a shadowrun mixture, but new comers will love it. I will have my final verdict once I can play invasion though, it's what I"m waiting for the most.

I've noticed a lot of similarities between Reach and Shadowrun. It's like Bungie brought in a bunch of the old FASA guys and put them to work on it. Even the grenades behave almost exactly like Shadowrun. But Shadowrun is still my premier FPS of this generation, so I have no complaints.

I'm glad the game isn't just Halo 3.5, or however one wants to call it. It's still fairly similar to what Halo 3 did, but it has enough changes to make it unique and still have that Halo feel.

I rage albeit silently regardless of gametype if I am in the negative. I then flog myself to repent.

For those complaining about armor lock, I don't think its hard at all to counter. Already seen a few folks who have the timing for it pretty much down. One match had me armor lock on a guy, he backed up and after a couple seconds tossed a grenade at my feet. Lock ends, grenade goes off -- I'm dead.

As for people spamming AL for melee battles for an easy shield depletion -- That's easy, stop rushing in for melee all the time and adjust your tactics. This isn't Halo 2 / 3. Like it or not, Armor Abilities add / change a lot which requires altering your play styles.

Really? Reach is a Halo game, through and through. After Halo 3, this feels sooooo good.

Sure, I can change my style of play, but it would be helpful if I could actually tell what abilities an enemy is packing in order to adjust accordingly.
