Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Really? Reach is a Halo game, through and through. After Halo 3, this feels sooooo good.

IMO, Reach reminds me of a prettier Halo:CE with armor abilities. Despite the fact I tend to get my butt kicked, I'm reminded of all the Halo:CE lan parties I used to go to. Could also have to do more with them bringing back a pistol which -resembles- the old Halo pistol.

Either way, I've had more fun with the Reach Beat MP then I ever did in MP for H2 or H3. Then again, I don't really care about being competitive so that might be why.

Isn't the Jet Pack obvious? As for AL / Invis / Sprint, all it takes is a bit of battling it out, you'll eventually see who has what.

There are small things on the armor that lets you know what they are using. There's some pictures floating around that will show you.

For those complaining about armor lock, I don't think its hard at all to counter. Already seen a few folks who have the timing for it pretty much down. One match had me armor lock on a guy, he backed up and after a couple seconds tossed a grenade at my feet. Lock ends, grenade goes off -- I'm dead.

As for people spamming AL for melee battles for an easy shield depletion -- That's easy, stop rushing in for melee all the time and adjust your tactics. This isn't Halo 2 / 3. Like it or not, Armor Abilities add / change a lot which requires altering your play styles.
Yes, Armor Lock is not an instant win. It's called using it correctly. Just because a moron shoots a rocket at his feet instead of at the guy with the AR 20ft in front of him doesn't mean AR>Rockets. And the issue with not running in is that it's only ineffective when your opponent does have Armor Lock. Unfortunately, unlike the Jet Pack ability, you cannot tell who does and does not have Armor Lock until they use an AA.

And I'm not complaining because it's hard to counter -- I use it much better than I've encountered others using it. It's for that very reason, the reason being that I use it almost all the time, that I see it as too powerful.

So how do I access the beta?, I have Halo: ODST, when I go to extras the only thing that appears are videos, the mythic disc does not have any references about the beta

The more I play, the better I get. Who would've thunk it?

Had a really nice game of Covie Slayer and was utilizing evade quite nicely. Halo:Reach firefights are intense.

Oh, I agree in thinking its too powerful.

Right now you've got three things that happen with it. 1: Temporary Invincibility, 2: Shield Sap for anyone who melees you, 3: Personal EMP if you let it run out.

Frankly, I think it needs to be 1 and 3 and not 1 - 3.

It's not up yet. When it goes up, the Extras text will change to Play the Beta, and that's how you'll access it.

A youtube video a couple of pages back...I've lost the link and can't search for it right now. However, the stuff here, is basically the same information. These are VERY good tips for the DMR and Pistol.
The video linked in that post is pretty handy. Give a very nice feel for ideal DMR and Pistol firing speeds.

What? Seriously? Have you been playing Halo since the very first one? Having accuracy weapons that don't actually have accuracy does NOT feel like Halo to me.

I've been playing Halo since the first and this feels like Halo to me. Maybe even more like Halo 1 than any of the others. And accurate weapons do have accuracy by definition, but besides that, they are as accurate as you let them.

I am awful with grenades. :lol

Other than that everything else is getting better. Pistol really came together for me tonight.

Doesn't the Beta come out soon?

Why aren't there more people getting read...

Also, playing by myself sucks.

If you're playing by yourself now I'll jump in with you. None of my friends are on.

I'd really love the ability to customize the weapon your Spartan is holding when people view your record- it'd be a neat way to add further customization and another thing to spend your cR on. I can't be the only one who would rather see their Spartan holding a DMR or something else besides that AR.

Holy crap? I have 856 kills with frag grenades in Halo 3. out of 1882 games. I still believe reach frags are a little over the top!

K/D doesnt mean squat unless all you play is Slayer matches. Playing CTF and Stockpile ive died TONS by securing flags and removing from enemy locations. As long as you win the game K/D is meaningless unless all you play is Deatmatch

Honestly, I think objective games would be a million times better if they simply didn't include the K/D ratio in your overall total. What would be so wrong with having separate K/D ratios for slayer and objective games (or, if necessarily, eliminating the K/D stat altogether in objective games)?

I disagree entirely - I didn't care for that game at all - but you just nailed the point I was trying to make, so thanks. :D

I'll pipe down for a while and stop shitting up the thread, which I've done too much, and let the influx of everyone that gets their hands on the Beta tomorrow go at it without my bitching. I'm curious how the breakdown is; I'm sure some die-hards will be disappointed, but many who weren't that into Halo before will really appreciate the scale of the changes. Similar to what's going on now. Should be a fun couple of weeks.

In the meantime, I'm ready for Invasion; I'm kind of burned out on the current maps a bit. I have a feeling once Invasion hits, I'll be living on that playlist.
You also admitted to not liking FPS games in general.

Reach seems to be the culmination of balance in game, skill being more than twitch accuracy, and core Halo fundamentals they've been trying to nail the past 10 years. It's starting to be a console shooter that's smart instead of dumb. Halo's gameplay has been dumb but Shadowrun stopped treating the player like an idiot. Granted, its players were dumb; Luke Smith described it as "Stupidly complex."

Let's not forget that some Bungie members worked on Shadowrun and some FASA members worked on Halo 3.

Anyways, it's a step in the right direction -- a hilarious slap in the face for MLG considering all they've tried to do since CE is rebuild the pistol and outdated game mechanics -- and I [removed because I think it sounds lame]

I agree with this. I was thinking about it earlier.

I would also like to see different legs armor for Spartans and perhaps hand armor?

Agreed.

They could also include a K/D ratio where kills are coupled with assists: with the greater enphasis on team work and with the inclusion of commendations, it would be a useful statistic.

Like a positive spree in a *insert sport* championship. Kill=win, assist=draw,...

So if I get 10 kills, 6 assists and 14 deaths I will get a +2. Which is a good way of representing the aid provided to the team (dying constantly :lol).

I suspect I'll be spending much more time with Campaign and Firefight in Reach than with MP. Both because I gravitate toward that type of play more in general, and because of what Reach's MP is about.

You might not be the only one. The time it takes to kill people is frustrating for me, and it makes the game very tedious. Not to mention that you just don't stand a chance against anything halfway powerful. Just got done with a covie slayer on powerhouse and people are just runing around with the plasma pistol charged. there isn't even any point in trying to take a shield down with regular gunfire anymore.

Funny. I usually avoid MP modes in Halo and stick to co-op, but I might actually play more of Reach online than other Halo games.

Not sure why. Maybe it just clicks with me.

I lowered my sensitivity down to 2 from the 5 I usually play at and think my shots have benefitted from it. Scanning with the DMR is harder, but aiming while jetpacking *much* improved. Will probably affect melee too much though and I'll have to change it back.

Well that's hardly a fair shake. Covie Slayer is pretty much broken right now, especially on boring ass PH. You can't do shit with the NR (Nerfle is a fucking horrible name btw) on that map, but people are too stubborn to try out the repeater. Makes encounters take way too long, and the PP becomes the only way to prevent that.

Yeah thats in 191 games. I honestly like how powerful they are; it is a really nice change. But spawning with 2 is 1 too many.

This whole dilemma made me become a Powerfist man tonight. Now I pretty much won't go anywhere without Powerfisting.

So I was playing crazy king and heard Hail to the King. Had no idea what it was but when I checked the medals afterward it is for getting a killing spree while standing in the same hill before it moves. Unfortunately there is apparently no actual medal for it as the medal was just a dot or something.

Edit: When I check bungie.net it only has this image

for the medal.

I don´t have XBL Gold at the moment and i don´t want to get it just for the beta, could i play the beta with one of the XBL trial memberships?

As frustrating as it is, it's still just a Beta. Wait until we hear about the updates they've done to MP closer to launch to judge.

It's not describing the spread, it's describing that which is describing the spread. Bloom is when the reticle expands to indicate current bullet spread, not that a gun has a spread. If you can think of a better name than reticle bloom to describe that expansion, I'd be glad to hear it.

urk said:
Bloom doesn't describe the spread of fire. It describes the visual bloom. Of the reticule.

Games from 10 years ago had these things and they didn't call it "bloom".

Call it "dynamic reticule".

Contrasted to the "static reticule" in previous Halo games.

It's dynamic because it shows you the bullet spread in real time.

If it makes you feel more comfortable call it the "Battle Reticule Circle" or "brO" in short. :D

Seems counterproductive to call it something that already exists in the game. The game apparently uses HDR bloom often.

"Hey what Territory are you in?"

"What do you mean...we're playing Team Slayer"

"Where are you on the map?!"

"Oh my location...let me check the callout..."

Calling a feature something else that already exists in the game's lexicon just doesn't make sense.

I've always been a campaign nut and will remain as such into the foreseeable future - though I dig Reach's MP. That said, save me a battle bro slot coop style.
