Halo: Reach Beta Thread

One thing that I want to give props to Bungie for that I've only heard complaints against, clip size. Especially the pistol. I see everyone asking for more shots, but it makes me wonder whatever happened to reloading being a balancing factor for a weapon. It's worst that in previous games, most weapons except for power weapons only had enough clip size for a single kill, but then the Battle Rifle and Carbine were exempt from this rule. Now it's been changed so that all regular weapons have enough clip to kill one person and maybe damage a second before reloading. You have a sidearm for a reason.
I find that sometimes if I use all 8 pistol shots up I swap to the AR and mop up rather quickly instead of reloading, oddly it's always been against jet pack users.

The ammo count currently for the pistol I think is spot on, long as you land your shots you should get a kill before running empty. The only weapon I think that has too much ammo is the energy beam sniper, I can run around with that like a flame thrower and get 8 kills before I die and drop it with 40% still left in the battery.

Hey guys, why dont the new shield mechanics that apply to melee's apply to grenades?i hate when my shields are down by a quarter and a grenade kills me out of nowhere.

P.S. Im starting to love CTF on Sword Base. There are so many shortcuts in both maps.

Because grenades are OP. Haven't you been keeping up with this?!

Does it just have horrible accuracy unzoomed then? Because something about the pistol isnt working very well for me :lol
Don't know about that, you have +27 kills with it.

Hit them anywhere four times, take a breath and then go for the headshot.

The current shield/health split has exceptions, such as the grenades, sniper rifle, shotty, etc.

isn't the kill/death stats for weapons just how many kills you've gotten with a weapon, and how many times you been killed by an enemy with that same weapon?

So it's not really an accurate measure of how good you are with a weapon, I mean, i'm 65/10 with the needler for instance, and while it's a good weapon now, it's not that good :lol

Totally unrelated but I keep on getting random friend request from people on live and junk, the recent one said I was really good and he wanted to be my friend, seriously, what gives? I haven't played the beta since Sunday and I'm still getting random requests, kinda freaky. I really don't accept any unless they let me know who they are or how they got my GT.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Seems no one is voting on the game type (BTW, great idea Bungie makes me hate Matchmaking slightly less, but MM still sucks copious amounts of shit, server browsers next go around, plz), meanwhile.

And the armor lock ability is useless. You basically become a sitting duck and let someone throw grenades (if they're smart) at you to kill you as you come out of the lock. *shrug*

Same for the jetpack. Doesn't seem that useful. Too slow to take off. :/

Sprint wouldn't be bad if it wasn't put on the stupid bumpers. Meh.

Really want to try out Invasion and the capture the core stress-test mode, but apparently they aren't part of matchmaking. Meh.

So far: Meh. I kinda prefer Halo 3 (as insane as that sounds) over this. I have yet to play an elite (the model I chose in H2/H3), and most people seem focused on Team Slayer/Slayer instead of playing objectives. Meh.
How does matchmaking suck? (without comparing it to a server browsing model please)

and :lol at thinking armor lock is useless. You're doin' it wrong!

Ah, i see. Grenade spamming is the only thing that really gets on my nerves. Everything else is really starting to grow on me. This game is really different, its much more difficult then Halo 3 but its more addicting to me.

Pretty much.

But i think most people cant appreciate the graphics because of the Jaggies and the lack of in your face crazy Killzon-esque cinematic lighting. I really do appreciate the graphics in this game.

Okay, b.net is definitely not seeing that I have a Bungie Pro account and its been like half a day now. Is there a support email or number I can contact them with or something?

I already posted in this thread on their forums:
http://seventhcolumn.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=34485806&postRepeater1-p=10
The way I got bungie pro to work is this:

Booted up ODST
Bought pro
Quit to dashboard

This is where I first thought it was working and went into reach to see my new fileshare size which was unchanged and bungie.net said I had 25mb old space, so to fix this you need to:

Go back into the game you bought pro from and let it download the DLC you just bought. It requires the game to be restarted after you buy it the first time and a mistake I also ran into, it's like the game only checks for pro on boot.

With regards to clip sizes, the Plasma Launcher needs at least half the clip size. Or perhaps lower the tracking (it's supposed to be used for big vehicles after all) because at the moment every time I pick it up I feel like a god, it's so easy to kill with.

- The UI is slick and gorgeous. I love the swooping action of the menus, and how you press left or right to navigate through the screens like the 360's old blades.

- I am awful with the DMR.
And not much better with the Needle Rifle.

- Melee dueling is not as satisfying as it was in Halo 3. The minimal sense of impact and nearly nonexistent lunge make me very sad.

- On the plus side, it's wonderful that melee attacks can block the Plasma Sword now.

- The Needler is amazing.

- The Pro Pipe is even better. Such a satisfying weapon to use. Invariably, I select Sprint for my armor ability and rush to the Powerhouse bathroom at the beginning of every game. Maybe not the best strategy, but nine times out of ten I make it there first, and then for a few sweet minutes Reach is nothing but awesome.

- My aim sucks with headshot weapons and I can't figure out what to do about it.

- Jetpacks = my guaranteed death when I use them and killing sprees for everyone else.

- I have yet to find a reason to select Active Camo over the other AAs in Slayer.

- Spartan movement speed is way too slow. Want to get to a good gun on Powerhouse without Sprint? You're SOL. Want to strafe away from a grenade? Motherfucker please. You might as well unhinge your jaw and gobble it down like an anaconda, for all the good your toddling will do.

- Spartan jump height is way too feeble. The Halo I love lets you hop over other players' heads with ease and discover cool and useful jumps on every map. Bungie seems to be gradually chipping away at the things that distinguish Halo from other FPSs.

- Covie Slayer is too rare for my liking. I've played it three times out of about 40 games in the Grab Bag playlist.

- Like every Halo before it, Reach has the power to annoy or infuriate me in a matter of minutes. Unlike every other Halo, however, I seldom feel fully responsible for my failures. Reach's sluggish Spartan movement, in combination with the added chaos of Armor Abilities and stricter aiming for all precision weapons, turns every few games into horrible muddle. A veritable clusterfuck, if you will. Sometimes all the changes seem to gel and the game is great fun. But too often, everything just feels sloppy and wrong and I find my hands shaking with frustration as I stare at the respawn screen yet again.

- I've won almost exactly 1/3 of my matches. If I were playing a demo instead of a beta with a looming shutoff date, I'd probably take a week's break. I don't consider myself a very competitive player, but isn't winning the goal you're charged with, if not the whole point of playing?

- Something needs to be done about quitters. Over the last two days, at least 15 of my matches were ruined by some dickless snot who made the selfish choice to abandon his team. I hate it. It condemns me to 10 minutes of tedium for having the decency to stick with bad allies or play a gametype I didn't want, just to try and give the other players a good experience. I wish Bungie would ban serial quitters from the beta.

Hm am I reading this right from the bnet forums, non american users can't use the amazon.com checkout to buy render point packs for pro use? since I am a UK user does this mean I am limited to my 5 free minutes a MONTH? that's not what I paid 750 points for :(

I am yet to try buying points but I did want to buy more before the beta ends so I could log all my action as rendered video, this sucks if I am unable to buy render minutes.

There are how many DMR's on the map? If you're not getting a 'good gun' then the problem is your definition of 'good'. Thanks to spawn locations, lots of weapons are accessible without sprint.

Strafing isn't your only means of escaping from a grenade.

There are still plenty of jumps. Some places are only accessible by jetpack, and some can only be done with sprint.

What's the process involved in rendering in HD in Bungie Pro? Does it take up more of your allocated minutes or something?
It cost 5 Minutes for 1 minute of HD hotness I believe.

Perhaps you could paypal some friendly US gaffer.

Still pissed that the Bungie Store is US only too.

For those that haven't done it yet, throw in HALO 3 and do a little comparison after you've played REACH for a bit. Unfucking believeable how good REACH looks compared to HALO 3.

On a different note, I have been spending a lot of time in REACH's Theater Mode taking screen shots and what not and there is one thing I would love to be able to do in the final build, and that is take away all the lights and shit that you are surrounded in when you are getting hit. There are so many shots I have taken that would be amazing if it weren't for all the bright lights surrounding and engulfing my guy. Im not talking about in regular gameplay, just in the Theater/screenshots mode.

Would something like that even be possible to implement?

I'm in Canada and I can buy the points no problem. I have an American and Canadian Amazon account and have had no problem buying things off both stores. I've also bought stuff off the UK store since blurays are super cheap there. I thought the login was universal, no?

I just tried to buy some time and when it said for me to log in to amazon.com I used my .co.uk details and it worked, my card data and postal address was all the same, so I bought 50 minutes.

Time will tell once the transaction is complete, £3.3 is the current conversion rate but there might be a hidden transaction fee from going GBP>USD.

It's because I made everyone look so super awesome in the Montage. Kids are now seeing it on Waypoint and sending FR's to random people in there :lol

I guess the preferred nomenclature is "power weapon?" Focus Rifle, Shotgun, Rocket Launcher, Grenade Launcher. You know.

As I said in my previous post, I'm awful with the DMR. I never can tell if I'm firing slow enough to maximize accuracy, and my aim is terrible. The gun feels weak to boot.
Yes, I damn well know it can kill in five shots, just like the pistol.

Strafing isn't your only means of escaping from a grenade.
Correction: strafing is not a means of escaping from a grenade. Not anymore. Not now that Spartans run like they're hip-deep in molasses, and grenades explode within half a second of coming to rest.

Come on. You can barely clear another Spartan that's directly in front of you. Ledges and walls you would easily have been able to surmount in Halo 3 stop you like one of these now:

And don't bring Armor Abilities into this. Obviously I'm talking about unaided jumps.

Strange I remember Dani asking for someone who he could paypal the money.
Perhaps I mis-interpreted from that.

Is there a way to tell if you have played the minimum amount of games for the day. I know there is the screen that pops up and tells you, but yesterday a buddy jumped in and played several matches while I was on the phone. I'm pretty sure I hit the daily quota when he was playing but he wasn't paying attention, so I didn't know for sure.

Check your stats on Bnet and see if you played 3 or more games in Arena.
If so, yesterday counted.

The pistol and DMR are so satisfying, I'm constantly having to decide which one to use cause I like them both equally. If I had to guess, the pistol is slightly better at close range, and the DMR at long range. Just remember to time your shots and breathe! The DMR in particular has a great weight and feel to it, and it sounds like a beast! So so good...Good riddance BR!

My favorite thing about it is how you'll be running with your team and opponents start attacking so you armor lock, only to find that everyone left you to be gangbanged all by your lonesome.

So are you complaining that someone from blue spawn can't get to the shotgun before the red spawn? Or vice-versa with grenade launcher? Not everyone rushes for a power weapon (good players do, which is a strategic advantage). If you have the jetpack/armor lock you don't need to rush to the rocket launcher since those let you escape damage from it
unless you're bad
, and it just keeps going on.

-if you have a hardon for getting the rockets, get sprint, otherwise stop crying.

Sorry you suck with the DMR, it's a good weapon. DMR can go toe to toe with any other weapon as it's all a matter of skill.

In H3, if a grenade landed at your feet you couldn't strafe to escape 100% damage. So is your problem that they run slow or detonate too fast? Both? Grenades are fine.

Have you even bothered to see what places you can get into with 'unaided' jumps? Maybe the relation between places you can jump now is the same as before when jumps were floaty. My point about the AAs is that you can use them to get into places you can't normally get to, which ends the need to jump on a ledge for half a second only to jump again to another ledge to get on a building. Now, just fly up there.

tl;dr = this game is not halo 3, stop treating it like it is.

One thing I wanted to mention before I go back to work and forget: Less motion blur, plz. I was slightly annoyed by the motion blur in Halo 3 and Bungie piled it on in Reach. Ugh.

I'm sorry, but if anyone says armor lock is OP/ annoying, then you clearly suck at the game. Also, grenades aren't too powerful, they're just over used. Every firefight turns into a grenade mosh pit. You're bound to get killed by one. Just sayin'.

I'm getting better with the Deemer. Still, increased rate of fire would be nice. Other than that, beta kicks ass.

One of my gripes as well. I use Sprint almost exclusively, but on Powerhouse I keep getting snagged on what look like knee-high ledges. I'm sprinting and do these nice long, gliding jumps, but often I come full stop at what looks like stuff in the picture (I know it's taller, perspectives and all) because I can't clear it. It's frustrating.

A prime area is when aproaching the back of Powerhouse, there's the winding path off to the left that wraps around to the side door. The ledge slowly grows up from the ground; to clear it you have to be almost at the very end of the path, at what feels like a bunny hop. I wish jump was about 10% higher, and movement didn't carry so much weight to it.

It's what the sentinal beam always wanted to be. I don't think it's overpowered at all. The Plasma Launcher, however...:lol

I love armor lock. Any time anyone uses it, just wait a little, then drop a nade at their feet. Time it right and you will usually get them as they come out of the lock.
