Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Wow, some of you guys are taking this really hard. :lol urk is so right about the hyperbole that some of you are spewing. I mean, I've seen comparisons to Zelda II and COD in here. It's like some of you have lost your minds.

I hope Bungie has some rational people there that are able to seperate the noise from the reasonable. If they make this game Halo 3.5 in the months before release then I'm done with the series. Stick to your guns Bungie. I could not be any more delighted that Bungie decided to do a new spin on Halo isntead of playing it safe and farting out another stale take on the Halo formula. Halo 3 is boring. It's the very definition of boring.

I've seen some of you complain about the speed of the game and I don't understand where this is coming from. This feels like the fastest game of Halo that they have ever released. Nearly all the weapons are reasonably lethal. The plasma pistol seems to be the only exception. I don't have to scavange for BRs anymore. That slowed down Halo gameplay. I probably spent as much time looking for a BR in Halo 3 as I did shooting people in the face. NOT AN EXAGGERATION. I also find moving through the maps much faster overall. Sprint speaks for itself. Jetpack allows you to traverse large sections of the map easily and quickly by bypassing obstacles. Invisibilty allows you to move with ease. Armor lock buys you a lot of time. It's essentially a moving bubble shield without the stupid. The armor stuff is brilliant and refreshing. I was expecting the worse and I was very cynical about Reach prior to playing the beta, but it really shows that Bungie thought this stuff through.

The melee and shield complaints are also silly. So, melee has been the same in previous games. What's wrong with something new? It feels right to me. I'm done with the days of AR+beatdowns. DONE. The sprint+melee knuckleheads get a couple of nice slugs to their body and then one to their face and they're done. It's been amusing to to have proximity chat and hearing people say "What the hell?!" when they try to sprint+melee me and then get head shotted with the pistol. It's also kind of stupid to see this seven foot tall super soldier stick out his arms like an idiot as a melee attack. It looked so weak. I like the way it feels now. As for the shield stuff... Health packs are a really good idea and I disagree about how the game should show people getting hit with shots. I like the way they're doing it now. I thought the lightning bolt effect was ugly.

I think Halo Reach is suprerior to Halo 3 in nearly every way.

Is it possible to raise your division in the arena once you have been placed in one? Like say, I just got a silver star but really want gold, is it possible for me to keep playing and rank up??

That's me off in the distance in the top right

My team mate emptied a full clip into this guy and had to reload. Before he got close enough to melee I fired 1 bullet from miles away and got the kill :lol

Found this on HBO's forums.

Apparently bullets, AR rounds to be specific, can collide in Reach. I knew rockets and grenades and other "physical" objects could hit each others, but I never thought of bullets doing that. There's even a special sound for it.

Vid (Rewind it and go in ultra slow motion to see the two back to back bullets hit each other)

The weapon doesn't give you any warning that you're being targeted and its follow is too great. I haven't been killed by the Focus Rifle in Invasion yet, but I'd like to see that gun removed too.

Played you yesterday, I mentioned Trek but you never replied :( GT: Starfleets

I can't get the Beta to show up on my ODST menu. I've yet to download it since it started (only played it at a friends house so far). Any ideas how to make it show up? I was told to wait 12 hours before, but it's been three days now..

No codes or anything needing entered?

Ugh, just got booted for betraying a teammate in invasion after the game was pretty much over. So, even though I won, I betrayed one person and didn't get anything from winning.

Super awesome.

Regarding betrayals... I don't understand why betrayals in Swat count against your team. Some idiot in Swat the other day kept betraying teamates on purpose and our kill count kept going back.

Who do we send glitches to? Found some weird area of the Invasion map that instakills people.

Best video ever :lol I couldn't stop laughing after watching the spartan at the very end of video drop down off the ledge only to instantly die. I'm guessing that he wasn't very happy.

After not really feeling the regular Grab Bag gametypes too much earlier in the week (only played a few games), I really got into Invasion today. I think it’s because it’s a more structured form of the Big team battle that I really dig. even when I have really poor games, I don’t get nearly as frustrated as on other maps or gametypes. I felt like I knew why I was dying.

plus it was great to have vehicles back in the mix in a serious way (even if the banshee feels like it’s going to fall out of the sky at any moment)

Two questions:

- One time, I actually lost points and reverted to a previous Rank. why?!
- This other game of Headhunter, I had 1-2 points, then I took 10 skulls and when I brought them to the point... I won the game with 25 points. why?

A weird booting bug I noticed - When you boot a player the option stays up on screen, I had to click forgive to get rid of the message. (luckily the player got booted). This happened in 2 different games. I guess the closedialogue box code bugged after the boot code?

That's called a Skullamanjaro. You straight out win the game if you can bring 10 skulls to a capture zone.

In theater, I wish you could watch everyone from a first person perspective. Not just yourself.

It would be super useful for me when I play against a very good player and would like to learn from him.

How is it in any way fair that the Spartans get 3 Scorpion tanks in the final round of Invasion? They're powerful enough as it is, but with the ability to park it over the core it become ridiculous. Every time we destroyed 1, they got another one within 15 seconds.

That would be great, but I have a feeling there are technical limitations making it impossible.

Maybe this has already been asked/solved, anyway: is there a way to keep a group together on the same team on invasion?

We're always six friends, and it's very rare to end up on the same side.

Not in the beta, but it has been fixed for the final game apparently.

Sketch has said it is a bug and cannot be fixed in the beta.

It will however be fixed for Fall release.

Edit: Beaten by seconds.

Also a tip: Go in as a group of two (less than ideal, I know) and you will not be split.

so many MB's!

I think this limitation is caused by the imperfect syncing of clients. What your box sees/thinks the other player is doing is not 100% accurate at all times (asynchronous). On a large map like Boneyard spectate a player driving a vehicle who is very far away from you. Likely you will see warping and other subtle imperfection. That is how it looks third person, imagine how it would look first person.

I could be way off on my answer, but that is essentially what I think is the reasoning for not having it a possibility. Just simply not enough proper syncing, it wouldn't look right.

Edit 3: I hate to make several posts back to back... But I hate to make my one post look cluttered :\.. eh

To be fair, in the game I just played, the Scorpion never lasted more than 15 seconds.

One possible bug: if someone is boarding a vehicle, a smack on the back won't kill them. I was right by an Elite that jumped on our Scorpion, and I hit him right in the back as he did, but that didn't kill him. I thought it would, so I'd backed up, and by the time I hit him again, he'd toasted the tank.

Another reason to increase the jump height: I have a chance at evading a ghost that's trying to splatter me. I can't do that anymore. :(
Yeah. I failed a good 3-4 times in that one game of Invasion Slayer. Never did clear it. It was funny watching that Ghost spatter everyone in the hill, even though all three of them jumped up, though. Okay, funny might not be the right word...

I don't know if this is the case, but it really feels like parts of the game were designed with a higher jump height in mind, and then jump was dialed back. The Ghost jump, and several ledges on Boneyard look clear-able but are a whisper too high, impeding movement.

That sounds pretty logical, I always though it had to do with resource allocation; Since the theater runs off the game code, your not receiving the other player's first-person view because you don't have access to their game code. This is probably all wrong too but I want to believe.

If you downloaded the files on your friends 360 you might need to redownload them on your box now that you are home.

I'm really taking a liking to the Arena. The concept of constantly trying to improve your daily rating - which is allowed as only the three best are recorded to the average - is really addictive. Although I have a lot of frustrating matches, it always feels somewhat fair and I rarely lose stamina to continue for another match.

Invasion is also starting to grow on me, but I do think Bungie could do much better with this game mode. I would especially hope in the beginning of a match, the Elites would be better hidden away and even more suggested to use stealth approaches. It would be so cool if they could attack from pretty much anywhere, the Spartans scared to shit about whenever the attack will happen. And in that regard, make the countowns longer!

But overall I'm having a blast... I really like Bungie's choice to go in this direction!

Playing as an elite in Invasion is not fun. At all.

I think there should be a version of invasion in which the first phase is really difficult, like you're storming the beach at Normandy or something (to some extent, the way it is right now).

However, if and when you clear the initial hurdle, the Elites would get a tactical and weapon advantage, and it would be everything the Spartans can do to hold them off for the remainder of the round.

There also should be a version -- managed simply through the initial loadouts -- where the game is more balanced from the start.

It's probably a good idea I'm not involved in the development of this game

Am I using it wrong or is the needle rifle a bad gun? I can shoot a guy as much as I want with it and they never explode like with the needler which I thought it was supposed to do. As it stands, to me it just seems like a bad DMR.

Oh no no, it's very useful... it can supercombine like a needler, but it takes many shots. The good thing about it, compared to a DMR, is that it shoots faster and is more precise, so it's better for longer distances. You need 6 or so shots to the body to take down the shields and then a simple headshot will do the trick.

They had this in the Halo 3 internal MS beta (you can see it on Mr Jukes' Betalicious vid) but it was taken out because it didn't look good. It wouldn't work for the same reason a saved film (when you don't host) will have players on the other side of the map skipping around and so on. The game doesn't waste bandwidth by telling you unimportant stuff like the exact movements of players you can't see, so it's pretty rough and full of gaps.

You can also see this in H3 when you watch a player on the other side of the map when you're not hosting. The skipping is pretty bad there, and that's in 3rd person!

Random fact: you could actually achieve this in H3 co-op via a glitch. If everyone died and you watch another player in the saved film, it puts you in 1st person perspective when it reverts to the last checkpoint.

Edit: what Devin said.

Found a pretty huge possibly game breaking glitch.

I don't know if I should post it here because people might start doing it and ruin matchmaking. What should I do guys?!

edit: I've tested it about 4 times and it worked 100% of the time.

PM Urk with the details.

Offer vague and cryptic hints here to tease the rest of us.

In one of the first 1 flag CTF game I've played, I was escorting this guy with the flag who wouldn't get tired of dropping the flag, picking up the flag, dropping the flag, picking up the flag, all the way to home base, only made better by the announcer insisting on commenting it every f*cking time. I was patient. I let him capture the damn flag before swinging my trusty Assault Riffle behind his stupid head, twice. To death.

BETRAYAL!? I DESERVED A GOD DAMN MEDAL!
