Halo: Reach Beta Thread

One key element all Seventh Column members must cultivate is the mysterious quality known as "sack." To "have sack" is not simply to be courageous - although that is certainly an element. But one with sack is also daring - not just in a physical sense but also in his or her thoughts and ideas. We must all strive to emulate those with sack

Man, get with times.

They've obviously never ventured into an E3 thread or a PoliGAF thread, where 100 posts per page is required to keep up with the proceedings.

Hey Gaf I was hoping to get a review of Fall of Reach. Would those of you who have read it recommend it as a good read? I would really like a book which details the Spartan training program to give me a good background for the game.

Thanks in advance and I appreciate any and all input.

2nd favorite next to first strike. So I recommend it.

It was easily my favorite of the Halo books and give a good overview of the Spartan augmentation procedures (though the book deals with Spartan IIs and most of Noble Team are Spartan IIIs, but they were augmented quite similarly).

But that won't be for days!

The elite HaloGafers here have convinced me to change my posts per page settings from default to 100. This just feels weird now seeing all of these posts stacked on top of each other. :lol

If you like Halo there is no reason you should not read Fall of Reach

Fall of Reach is a perfect book for learning about the SPARTAN II training project - what you are after but I'd also recommend Ghosts of Onyx as it gives you a good insight into the SPARTAN III project, which was different.

Both books would provide with a solid idea about the sort of general backgrounds the Spartans come from and the Fall of Reach, despite it covering a story separate from the game, will give you a great idea of the carnage to expect.

From the beginning you know how it ends - Fall of Reach will show you how it ends. Also, the opening cutscene from Halo : CE is also good watching.

You should see what happens next. The Banshee flies right over his head and then explodes two feet from his face.

One of the Waypoint Videos, "Beta Primer" iirc. It's available for DL at their website.

Working on a new version with the sweet ending, can't believe I skipped out on that last part. I'm going to replace it with the other one in a minute.

I haven't read anything other than Fall of Reach but I already know that it's the best :D I haven't been hooked on a book like that in a long time. Sooo good. I just love all the things that surround Dr. Halsey. I find that shit so interesting.

Also...Reach Beta...holy shit...HYPE

First Strike is good stuff bro.

Reach is pretty entertainingly written- not Crime and Punishment or anything, but still a fun read. Weirdly, Fall of Reach actually skews away form the game content. Fall of Reach is about the Spartan-II program, while NOBLE Squad is mostly Spartan-IIIs. Another Halo book, Ghosts of Onyx, deals with the Spartan-III program.

But I'd recommend starting with the Fall of Reach- probably the best book in the franchise. If you like that, read First Strike, which is the sequel, but considerably weaker. First Strike leads into Ghosts of Onyx, which has tons of info on Spartan-III (although that stuff has been retconned a bit by Bungie, so not all the details fit).

Yea that's partly why I'm getting the Limited Edition of Reach

Also, Blood, I have that 3 pack which includes First Strike so I'll definitely be checking that out. Is it OK if I skip "The Flood"? Are they in order? Right now though I'm making my way through the short stories in Halo Evolutions...which I'm LOVING. First story was right up my alley. Dr. Halsey and the Spartan Program.

edit: Also, IGN's screens. For shame, what a fuckin joke.

The Flood is the best book in the series.

Seriously, get that book. It is a great fucking read. I just re-read Evolutions last night and "The Impossible Life and Possible Death" feels new every time.:D

Yes. It's okay.

Skip the Flood, it's basically just a retelling of Halo: CE. First Strike picks up right after Halo CE ends- I think it opens with the Chief in the Longsword as I remember.

I still need to get through Contact Harvest and Ghosts of Onyx >_<.

And I'm definitely going to re-read fall of reach :)

More like a direct walkthrough :lol

There where a few interesting points, so check if out if you have time, but its by far the worst Halo novel.

It's actually required you skip the Flood. If you can stand to read more than three chapters in you're either brain dead or a masochist.

And Reach is without a doubt the best of the Halo novels (I've only read up to Contact Harvest). Not only in information (origins of the Spartans, the depth of human civilization, the scale and history of the war with the Covenant), but it's also the best story wise.

Listening to some stuff from the Halo soundtracks to get myself psyched for the beta. Can't fricking wait. Going to read some Evolutions before bed tonight too. Going to go pre-order Reach at Best Buy tomorrow I think on my way back from the gym.

Haters be hatin' in full force tonight. It has been a number of years since I read it, but The Flood didn't strike me as particularly bad.

I noticed a couple days ago that Fall of Reach is available as an audiobook from iTunes. I've read all the books but I may pick that up as a refresher during my commute before Reach releases.

Yeah, the Flood sucks, everyone can skip it, because it is a bad book.

Fall of Reach is still my favorite, just because of how it details the growth of the Spartan II's. Ghosts of Onyx is also really good, as is Contact Harvest. First Strike is interesting just as a bridge between Halo 1 and 2. Cole Protocol has some interesting spots, but the pacing is a total mess, and ultimately it doesn't have much to say.
