Halo: Reach Beta Thread

AusGAF:

May 3rd 10:00am PDT is May 4th 3:00am AEST. Schedule your sick days for Tuesday and prepare for a late night/early morning.

It's horrible to think we have Monday off for Labor day only to have the Beta come out the morning after. School on Tuesday is going to be horrible.

Since I'm not in F&F and we only ever have one Halo thread going at a time, I figured I'd use this one to vent - whoever made the decision to have audiologs be tied to the playthrough and not to your profile is a total dick. Spent two hours with a friend last night getting 29/30, went to the menu to load up Data Hive, clicked through "this will delete progress" message since what kind of idiot would put the last audiolog on another map and then delete the other 29 when you loaded the map. Needless to say our co-op progress is now at 0/30 and we wasted two hours. It is a stunningly bad decision, and I can't imagine the reason behind it, beyond someone thinks that hunting for them is the most enjoyable part of the game and should be experienced as many times as possible.

In other news, I'm nearing completion on this final paper for my class and will hopefully be done today, so come Monday I can spend disgusting amounts of time in the beta.

Odd, when I recently loaded up ODST to get audiologs I started from the beginning and was surprised to find it had saved all the audio logs I'd already collected.

I'll say it: the assault rifle, pistol, DMR, and needle rifle are all perfect. If Bungie touch a thing about any of these weapons, I will be shocked. Pretty sure the plasma repeater is decent too, but I never touch it, unless it's to swap it in for my starting AR out of curiosity.
Agreed.

To reiterate: Armor Lock is NOT overpowered nor does it need to be "nerfed." If someone engages Armor Lock, all you have to do is wait them out or find someone else. However, my feelings may change once I see Armor Lock in Invasion.

Also, sniping in this game seems a little too easy compared to Halo 3's. Too many times I've been in a situation on Sword Base, I'm hitting the guy with the sniper so he can't scope, and I get sniped anyways. I think this is because the base player speed is too slow. That, and I just think Spartans need to move a little bit faster. It's a bit jarring from going to play Covy Slayer then playing a gametype with Spartans.

Fixed. I will cage fight the Bungie staffer who changes a thing about the DMR, pistol, or NR.

I'd like to see them remove the EMP effect for touching/meleeing someone. As it is you can just pop Armour Lock for an instant at close range and then come out and smack someone down at your leisure, and there's pretty much nothing they can do (although EazyB owning the sword dude with it was awesome). Keep the EMP blast at the end, obviously.

One thing Lars did tell me is already addressed for final game: incessant flag/ball announcer spam. Woot! If I never hear ball dropped again I'd be happy :)

Also must just be me and perhaps a large tv but I honestly haven't had any of the UI issues many here have describe.

Armour Lock is perfectly acceptable as it is at the moment.

Also, I'm done. I cannot play a full game without the connection being lost, however I can play 4 hours straight of Battlefield without a minor hiccup. Had a blast while it lasted. Only criticism would be One Flag on both maps. To hard to defend on one and to hard to attack on the other. Also having Stockpile as the "default" top choice is a bad design choice. Mix it up or put Team Slayer as the first. Stockpile is great but I'd actually like to play another variant every second game.

I'm curious, will we know about any changes made before the final game is released or will we just have to wait and see?

It saved mine in singleplayer, looks like, but not all of the ones I collected last night. Oh well, it's not the end of the world, and I'll be able to blow through them solo later. It's just kind of a weird case that ended up being kind of shitty.

42 inch 1080p HDTV here, and it's really hard to see the pistol's aiming reticule and bloom. I can see the Needler's, the Energy Sword's, the rockets', the hammer's, and the Nerfle's reticules just fine. It's the AR's, the DMR's, and mainly the pistol's that I have a problem with. Their reticules are too light/not dark enough.

Haven't really had a problem with that. I can't think of a situation like that occurring to me, actually. Maybe I need to play more games though.

The pistol crosshair is very faint.

But not to go all new age or anything, but after a while the reticle is just the minor accompaniment to a feeling you have about how accurate the shot is.

You gotta feel it!

KevinRo spelled it out in a post a while back. If you come around a corner and are dumped into a beatdown exchange, or in any situation where someone is going to try and melee you, really, Armour Lock gives you the upper hand immediately.

I'm also playing on a 42" 1080p and don't have reticule viewing problems. I still have the other issues with all of the other HUD displays feeling like they're too far off to the sides, I never look at any of it.

I think I need to take a picture but this is my only real problem with the game, everything else I dislike seems to be a good thing in the long run for the majority. The reticule colour on the other hand is frustrating as it makes me lose sight of the bloom, using the pistol without the visual indication of bloom is horrible. :lol

Maybe its just my monitor, im using a PC monitor and a VGA cable. Next time I play ill try and upload a pic and see if others notice it. Ive only had the problem with the pistol so far, but havent exactly used many other weapons so it may be a bit more universal than that.

On the loadouts screen the loadouts seem a little to the left, like the grey border aaaaalmost goes to the edge of the screen but just doesnt, theres gap between the grey and the edge of the screen where its just normal.

Wow, finally caught up with this thread!

Playing on a 57 inch, 1080p set. Pistol crosshair visibility could defiantly be improved, along with the whole in game UI, but that's been touched upon by others and myself already.

Im playing right now and i been doing good in all of my last few games except this last game... Seriously, those grenades are insanely insane. my first 4 deaths were cause by grenades and almost every other death was from a grenade... Since they made the weapons more skill oriented, did they try ballancing it out with making grenades extremely powerful for those who cant shoot?

Re: Voting

I actually like the voting as it stands now. By starting with all of the votes on a random game, the players who spend all their between game time afk or looking at themselves in that sweet armor they just bought are protected from the few people who only ever want to play one game type. If you got rid of the default-vote system, one team in party chat could effectively control what games are played by voting in unison. Great for them, not so great for the other team.

Think of the system as 'vetoing with options,' not as voting. Matchmaking has already cast his vote for the game on top, the people are just choosing to accept or reject that game.

Re: Reticule Transparency

I had major problems at first, but it hasn't been giving me trouble recently. I think I just sort of figured out the reticule behavior, and no longer really need to actually look at the bloom, unless I'm going for the final head shot. I still do occasionally lose the entire reticule, especially when I'm trying to shoot through a capture point.

Maybe I need to adjust the screen brightness in the main menu? Hm. Let me try it out.

Also, the Pro Pipe is amazing. Definitely one of my new favorite weapons. I probably like it more than the DMR/Pistol.

Edit: Obviously it's a problem for a lot of people. It's not going to hurt anyone if Bungie makes the reticules darker, even for those who have no problem seeing them as is.

Yeah, I like the system. Just agree with plenty of others that there should be some sort of noise or tone to alert you that voting has opened. Especially when the defaults right now seem to weight Stockpile/CTF heavily, and I don't enjoy those gametypes much at the moment unless I have a talking party of four.

An on-screen notification popping up would also be good.

Someone said they should get the announcer to say "Vote Starting", that would be an awesome idea.

I know I will probably get a lot of people riled up by even mentioning this, but it would be pretty fantastic if Bungie included an option(!!!) to let you see how much cR you are amassing during gameplay next to the reticule (kind of like in MW). It'd help give a bit more feedback to those who need it.

And yes, I've been spoiled by MW and Killzone 2 (that little beep is addictive).

Dem damn crooked vultures.

And also add the ability to change the HUD color to whatever we want -- like we can with our Spartans :D

I do like how every hill is a different shape and size, especially on Powerhouse, each with their own wrinkle. And the shapes are not confined to squares and circles, but are designed around the geometry of the location. My favorite hill has got to be on Sword Base, though. There's one that's a circle about three feet in diameter, right in a doorway. One poor sap at a time has to stand on it and get assploded. :lol

I haven't got a chance to play Crazy King yet but I really like the sound of this. It sounds like they've gone back to the Halo 1 system of hills of varying sizes fitting the geometry, rather than a bunch of big boring circles.

"Fall 2010."

(L. Smith has intimated that you will see cR pop-ups in the full game.)

I mean they already do this with the scoring in Firefight for ODST, and it feels great there. I've said before that "+10" is the greatest thing CoD4 introduced, and it would be a missed step not to ape it to some degree.

Hmm are they going all the way and showing it with every kill, or is it just for commendations?

Showing it will every kill would be awesome. :D

Don't use the camo AA. Mutes both players and is extremely annoying -_-

I heard (lol pun)

But to be fair I have not had trouble with hearing certain things using camo, it's not like I suddenly can't tell someone is behind me or not because I can still hear foot steps, just in a deeper and more quiet tone.

What's with all the plasma launcher hate? Using it awesomely is like making art!
Finger painting art :( but it's still fun as hell!

I used it a few times yesterday and knew exactly why you used it all of the freaking time. :lol

Still prefer the Rocket Launcher, though.

I'm probably one of the few people here (maybe) that thinks it's easier to shoot in Reach due to no auto aim.

Going back to Halo 3 is going to be (super) hard.

Just played an oddball game where I decided to NOT use sprint, I lost.

You move rather slow using the other perks since default speed is low.

That would be pretty sweet.

Also, I still feel the DMR needs to be a 4 shot. By adding reticule bloom and the reduction of auto aim, most players won't be able to 4 shot anyways so that making the fire fights longer than Halo 3's will still be present. Finally, more ammo plz.

I play on a 32" LCD (usually sitting <5' away) and am having huge issues with the reticule on the 'precision' weapons we'll say. For me I'd say the following factors are playing into that:

-faint reticule color:

Its really hard to see the visual feed back I'm supposed to be getting with bloom etc.

-i have no idea of when i've actually lined up a headshot:

Maybe I''m missing something here (perhaps due to the issue above), but I can never tell if I've actually aimed for the head. Combined with what seem like more 'compact' Spartans (I've trouble telling this with Elites too) and sometimes confusing feedback on when shields 'pop' versus being hit, I really feel like I'm just hoping that I've aimed in the right spot. At least in halo 3 with the dot, I knew where the line between headshot started and stopped. Whether I hit that or not is up to me of course.

Speaking of shields, I think the flaring needs to be toned down. It's so bright and all encompassing that it obscures the player beneath them. They should shimmer, not envelop the player. It also makes it impossible to take good screenshots of spectacular deaths, as the animation is buried in shield flare.

Covie slayer isn't so fun anymore, people don't use the repeater because its shit weak and the needle rifle is weapon of choice, plus the plasma launcher is OP beyond belief, annoying shit that you can't evade too easily. Can't wait for the bigger gametype with them though because human weapons will be laying around too.

Overall, I'm loving Reach's look.

I promised myself I'd take the night off from this after staying up until ~2am the past three nights, but I may have to take some screenshots when I get home. Been very remiss in that respect.

Man, Headhunter is quite possibly the dumbest thing ever. Seriously, creating an entire mode based around kill-stealing? Really? I would rather play 1v1 Phantom Pistols on Waterworks than this pathetic excuse for a gametype.

Other than that, the BETA is great. :D

Oh and to follow up on my covie slayer post, just had another one where half my team quit because they were unable to kill anything, it's the first ever game I have quit too because i'm not hanging around 1 v 4 for another 35 kills to win. I feel bad for doing it but I am not sticking around at a huge disadvantage.

So apparently Warrant Officer Grade 3 is the highest rank you can get in the beta.

It shows me as being able to level up to a Captain, but when you reach the required amount of cR it says "max level".

Shame :(
