Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Trasher said:
I know exactly what you are talking about, but do you think it's maybe just a delay on the text telling you that you got the kill?
No, at first I thought it was just the death animation kicking in late but after rewatching some films people have been able to toss nades or get another shot out noticeably after the final bullet (the one that eventually kills them) was shot at them.

I get this on my side too sometimes though it's harder to notice and separate it from possible lag. I'll often be sprinting around a corner when a sniper bullet strikes me down but only after I make it around the corner. Shit like that happened in Halo 3 due to lag but going back into the theater, even my system knew I got shot before I made it around that corner but the delay they've added to "hide latency" actually creates the allusion of latency so I have that split second where I think I made it. It also leads to me starting the AL animation during that borrowed time so I'll end up dying halfway through the animation.

Trash
, once you've finished your school work,
go into theater and watch one of your films. Pay attention to which bullet actually killed them/got the headshot then see how long it takes them to actually die from it.

Edit: WTF Trash, you hopped on for more Beta. Get some damn sleep you fool. You have an illness...

No doubt, but it certainly helps when people aren't paying attention to him because they are actually trying to win the game.

Sure they aren't paying attention but you can't argue that there were some pretty impressive kills. In both videos... and that's what people want to watch. Impressive kills. Not someone playing the game how they're suppose to.

i get a whole team full of 1200s vs a party of 1600s

none of my team mates break 5 kills and one goes -15......i get 15 and go positve, but i still get a low rating of mid 1400 and the -15 kid gets 1200

FUCK this trash

Wow on a UK bank holiday as well. That's pretty disappointing for the people who don't have it yet.

There not going to get much playtime tonight if that's the case if we add in DL times as well.

Low population probably, the game has to make due with who is on. You might get better matchups tomorrow.

My daily rating is 1557 today. Is lower good or bad? I had a 1600 game and a 1000 game, and a 1514 game I think.

I saw someone have a terrible game but a rating in the 900s, but m 1k was a really good game.

It was like that in 2007 as well, and that's also when most companies throttle the internet so I expect people to leave their 360's on over night.

Anyone want to hop in a party for some arena? I just played my first one. Went positive and managed to get the game winning kill with one second left. Two guys quit so it was 3 on 3. We almost reached 50 kills. It ended up being 48-47. Guy flew down on me from above so I armor locked and popped up to kill him with my AR just as the clock hit zero.

Bungie definitely needs to work on the "Halo feel" of Reach more before release.

Just played my three games of Arena. Didn't do exactly too well. I went positive in two games, but not by much, and my last game had two guys quit on the other team at the beginning of the match. :/ Hope that game doesn't count for those on the blue team who had their teammates quit on them.

I think I faced you in my first game of Arena. You were on the red team. You lost. Haha!
But that was only because I had this really, really good guy on my team.

Maybe it was just a placebo effect, but I was getting creamed pretty bad so I selected Skill as a connection option. After that I had really good and evenly matched games. I was getting k/d in the +/- 1-3 range and flag games were ending in ties. That was with a player pool smaller than 3000.

Sounds good ill let you know how i go on when i get the beta

From everyone's impressions, it looks like Reach's netcode crushes Halo 3's but how does it compare to other multiplayer games? Is it the best netcode so far on consoles?
Lets just say I've played 9 hours worth in the past 3-4 days. And only had encountered lag once. And the one time i encountered it...

It was momentary rubber-banding/warping of the opposite team, with their network bars about 1/2way down. And this is with the small pool of players who got F&F codes.

Imagine when the BETA is available to all, with millions online, there will be so many more people with acceptable bandwidth, that the possibility of actually experiencing lag in Reach should go down even more.

-You could say that it also increases the # of people with 'bad bandwidth' but that's what the "Prefer Good connection" option is for.

It's kind of annoying that assists are weighted so heavily, yet the way assists are calculated is kinda bullshit.

I was rated 1467 after three games, but the middle one was total garbage, so I'll try to get back on and kick it up a bit later.

Edit: oh God, this is that "player investment" thing they were talking about, isn't it.

That game was terrible. I had a positive, but some guy had a really bad negative, iirc.

You need to do at least 40% of the damage. How is it bullshit? Also, I realized that when you play arena you can be at the top of the scoreboard even if you don't have the most kills because of assists.

I'm at a 1551 after my first game. Want to get a party before I play some more.

Lol looks like bungie may have created their own version of addiction

People are already obsessing over their points averages:D

Out of interest what happens if someone is playing arean doing terribly and quits? does the score still go on their stats?

40% damage to health, though. Dropping a guy's shields nets you nothing.

Good the hear that.

I'm usually an assist-guy.

The netcode alone means I won't go back to Halo 3.
This is kind of painfully true. The matches have been nigh on perfect. The difference is crazy, I love the stability.

Must get some Arena in at some point today, seems I stopped playing just before it went up ironically.

People are already talking what sounds like meaningless numbers to me. And they're also pissed off at them. I guess that means Bungie has achieved what it was aiming for.

I'm not a good player, nor have I played that much, but Halo is quite the only fps I really play and enjoy.

And having only played 7 or so hours of Reach, I really can't see myself going back to Halo 3.

It's just that good.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm terrible at Halo. But it's really the only FPS I enjoy, and I tend to get pretty fanatical over it and it's fiction.

So far in my experience with the Beta I've found the changes to be rather awesome. Only things I really have even the slightest issue with in the grenades doing too much damage, as well Swordbase being a pretty bad map IMO. It definitely feels miles away from Halo 3, but in every way it's a good thing. At least that's my take on it.

Oh, and to back up my claims of being terrible, here's my service record. :lol :lol

Well shit lol. I must have missed that. Although it doesn't seem to affect me too much as I still get a good amount of assists. As easy as it is to headshot a guy without shields you think you would get the assist for taking a guy's shields down though. I dunno. The way it is now doesn't bother me but I can see where it would bother others.

Not latency. I don't have to lead my shots in the slightest.

Yes, it is latency. You don't have to lead your shots in Reach because the weapons are hit-scan. Aim at the dude's head, shoot, and you'll get the kill, but your game state won't update until you've done a round-trip to the host.

During that time he can shoot you back, or melee, or whatever. I've traded a headshot with a melee before, which doesn't make any sense without this way of working.

It's a bit disconcerting, but if you take it as granted that some games are going to have a host with a lot of latency, this is the best and fairest way to deal with it.

Its going to be anightmare aint it, alot of providers will throttle then or even if they dont its peak time so downloads could be slow. How big is the download anyways?, why they couldnt have rolled this out earlier us time to give us in the uk a chance instead of late morning when its going to be awash with players in the usa trying to download it and peak time for internet usage in the uk.

The download is only 1.2 gigs or so. It shouldn't take that long at all. Even with a lot of people downloading it.

I do have a question though, do the people playing from the disc actually have to download it or does it play straight from the disc?

You DL it when you launch into it from the ODST disc, and then you have to put the ODST disc in each time you play the beta, iirc. I could be wrong though.

So beta with be live for everyone else in roughly 6 or 7 hours from now? Ouch - I have some friends that are free this week just for the beta, and one of them is chilling in ODST right now... :lol

Guess I better give him a call to break it to him now... heh heh

Might check out Arena myself in a bit, but I got a lil headache though...

no, you're actually right.
they REALLY want you to hold on to your ODST disc, eh?

UK Xbox Live download servers are trash. It took me 5 hours on a 10Mbit/s connection, and that was on Thursday night so the servers weren't under much load. Most Euros aren't going to be playing this until Tuesday.

I really, really need to find something else to do today then. Maybe I could do some work.

Hahahahaha no.

Just played my first three games of arena. How come I can't find my rating on Bungie.net? The numbers are too small on my screen so I couldn't tell what it was. :(

Just played my first arena match and got my ass utterly handed to me. I think I'll wait for everyone else to come online before trying that again, I think the playerbase is a little hot for me yet :lol

Took me (Ire/UK XBL) less than an hour on a 7MB connection, but that was a likely much less busy Friday afternoon.

Is this beta out yet? it's been may 3rd over here for 12 hours now.
It'll be up late-morning PDT, at least another 6 hours.

That UK release is bs, people have to go to sleep at 11pm. Thats only 2 hours!

I was looking forward to playing this on bank holiday monday.

The Blur-Beta took me about 7 hours to download. I'd say you're on a far better connection then mine - even though mine is labelled as 10MB.

Guys for the beta Please stick NGAF in as your callsign, it helps see who is who in matches :D

Cool to hear Arena is finally up, time to check it out.

It's like catching up with this thread on GAF has become a part time job. I need to take some lessons to learn to read faster. XD

But after all that talk about DMR is the new BR', etc... all I can think of now is "at least we know it's out of MP". Hooray for semi-consistency, Bungle! I still hope it's just for pre-release testing purposes.

I don't think it quite works this way, seems to be percentile based.

the range is 1200-1600

a kid went -5 on my team got a high 1200, another one got -15 still went low 1200

also i havent seen anyone crack anything above 1690s

Hate crappy teammates, wanted to help a teammate because he was in a fight. He goes armor lock. I get in a fight with the enemy and my teammate just stays in his armor lock without helping at all. In the end, we got killed both against one enemy, sigh. Now got a rating of 1452, that can go up.

I found mine by going to my recent games list. If you go to your last game and go to results the rating is right there. As for your overall rating I'm not quite sure though.

I saw a guy with 900 something this morning. I think it goes lower than 1200

edit: higher is good? Maybe during my really good game I got a 1600 instead of a 1000. :)
