Halo: Reach Beta Thread

I think the daily look at the bnet beta forums has made a tumour in my brain.

There is certainly lots of people playing 1 game and then running to the forums to cry about the DMR/Grenades/Armour Lock/Why the game sucks because they cannot kill people.

So glad its the Beta and we can weed out all the potential idiots and griefers well before the final release.

It wasn't from the front, the animation had the spartan whipping the guy around before punching him in the stomach.

Really? Been a while since I actually saw it, if that's the case then that does seem a bit too elaborate, possible it was just too long of an animation? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Speaking of assassinations, I hope I'm not the only one who keeps accidentally doing them by holding melee for just a little bit longer than I mean to.

Had a bit of fun in theater.

Okay, I'm wrong on that point. I guess I didn't play enough of 3. But from the post I made before that, I think I have the better idea of what's going on - in 3, if they took off some of your base health as well, you wouldn't necessarily notice, as it would recharge. In Reach it doesn't so it appears that grenades are more powerful, when in actuality it's that you need to go seek a healthkit as opposed to just letting time elapse.
I do; it's one of the major reasons I use Sprint more than any other Armor Ability, and I still feel like I can't get away from them fast enough.

I refuse to use that bastardized term, you filthy nerf herder! I would rather double the syllables than use a phrase which sounds like something a baby would shout at a dog.
Says the guy who wanted to coin the term "deemer". :D

It is useful in Team Slayer, if you have a buddy follow you around the whole time. You go into armor lock and he lays waste to the kids waiting for you to come out of it. :D
I found out about this sweet combo yesterday. My teammate would just AL in front of people and I would sprint around him and make the kill. So awesome.

I've been using Recon myself but I was a default H3 anyway. I'm interested in finding out if the bumper jumpers out there are still bumping and jumping.
Nope, I've gone to the default side for Reach. Bumper Jumper just doesn't cut it with the AA on the X button.

Not the only one, I actually got an arial assassination last night by doing just that. Planning on uploading my mishap later.

Also, what's your avatar from?
lttp? I've been away.

He's too busy using armor lock

It's from a Reach Vidoc where they show some unfinished cutscenes

So did a lot of guys just want Halo 3.5? Reach is a much bigger step up than Halo 2 to Halo 3 was and I think it was needed. Not that I'm tired of Halo or any other hardcore Halo fan is, but it needed a kick in the butt to get more casual players interested again. I think this the right way of doing that. I'm sure we'll eventually get another Halo with more traditional Halo MP at some point.

It's from one of the early vidocs, I forget which now actually. It's an untextured animatic thing from (presumably) a cutscene. Edit: Beaten and with better info. :lol

Aerial assassinations are awesome, I do hope there's alot more variation in animations for the asssinations. I am looking forward to seeing the Spartan vs Elite ones come Friday though.

So bitter.

So what exactly is the advantage to playing Spartans when the Elites according to the OP get access to all the same abilities and have faster shield recharge and more health?

Sprinting and Armour Lock. The Elites don't get Armour Lock or Sprint.

Elites are made to be feared and due to that reason you can't just go and pick to be one like in halo 2 and 3, now you only play as elites in covie slayer or as the attacking teams of invasion and generator defence.

The matchmaking system needs to be fixed ASAP.

TWO THINGS.
When it 1st gives the option to choose a game type it needs to notify you with a sound. By the time it beeps for the countdown and I look up it's always too late to choose anything.

Secondly the default choice should always be slayer.
I just had to quit 5 games in a row of oddball because Boone was even paying attention to the voting system. It is so easy to miss the vote that again it should always default to slayer.
Then the other two options could be oddball or whatever.

Yeah, but they don't need sprint. Fuckers are fast (and armor lock is stupid, space lizards have taste).

Edit: unless they don't? There's a pretty high chance I don't know what I'm talking about!

BattleMonkey said:
OP says they get armour lock as well. And they naturally move at Sprint speed without need of cooldown.

Unless its something for final release, I have not seen any footage of Elites Armour Locking. I thought it was a Spartan only trick.

Eh. I'm having a real problem with grenades in Reach, most notably the spamming. It just seems like it's a lot higher than it was in Halo 3. Even if grenades are the same strength as they were in Halo 3, because the way the health is in Reach, I feel they're too powerful now.
Yeah. I had a (brief) frustrating session last night. The night before I didn't have much of an issue, but last night I seemed to explode every time I tried to shoot someone. I would get off a few shots with the pistol, and boom, even with full health. (I'm assuming multiple frags nailed me, but I didn't look in the theater to see.)

Spartans and Elites are not supposed to be equal, Elites were designed to be more powerful. For this reason they are only used in special modes like Invasion, or Elites-only gametypes.

Current k/d with the DMR and pistol are 1.83 and 2.14 respectively. I love these guns so much I want to move in with them.

Edit: k/d with plasma launcher is 4. Like, 4.0. Why does no one use this?

::raises hand::

It's part of my 'it'll work better if I push the buttons harder" mentality that seems to take over my muscles when I play. :lol I'm really working on keeping it from happening.

Double-tapping the melee button seems to help.

Headhunter mode is legit, a lot more strategic then what is seen at first glance.
It is great fun, but I don't know how you can claim there's any strategy to it. Random capture points make it mostly about luck.

It happens with age, Wu. Not much you can do about it now. :P

It happens to me all the time.

Elites are used in three game modes for the Beta: Covy Slayer, Generator Defense and Invasion. In the first it's Elites vs. Elites, so the differences don't matter. In the other two, the Elites are attacking, the Spartans defending. Spartans have the advantage of defending an entrenched position, while Elites have the advantage of speed and strength, especially in close quarters. We'll see how it plays out on Friday when Invasion goes live. (Note that in the Beta, the only armor abilities the Elites are given are Camo and Evade.)

I don't get why there are so many grenade complaints. They balance out those "that guy has a much more powerful weapon than me" moments. Instead of getting fucking owned I can throw a few frag bombs and at least stand a chance.

And there is nothing more satisfying than clearing out a hallway full of noobs with some well placed frags.

Leave the nade damage bungie! you made the game, you know how awesome they are!!!

Where the hell is the thing? I've only found it ONCE and I'm not even sure if it was the spawn spot.
It spawns in the top middle bridge on Sword Base, and replaces rockets on Powerhouse in Covy Slayer.

Ah, I meant as in people carrying skulls and who to choose to go after, for instance the guy carrying 5 or more is probably going to have several people after him where as the ones with 2-3 will not. As for the capture points that is still all about luck for me.

Well that explains why I haven't seen it on Powerhouse considering I've only played Covy Slayer twice, and didn't know the spawns yet, but there's no excuse for Swordbase. How I've missed it there I have no idea. :lol
