Halo: Reach Beta Thread

Check out this video

It is a friend of mine's clip... The spartan spawned beside him in the same god dam room... But then was immediately rocked :lol

:lol

I bet that Spartan thought "Easy meat!" and then had his face melted.

I have played 27 Invasion games, some great games, some really buggy games, some bitch games with people parking over the Core but I really think that it could be one of the best additions to Halo. Yeah Bungie needs to tweak spawns and some tinkering with weapon load-outs but when it all clicks, it plays really well. I just wish it would last a little longer. :D

oh god

this really is the first time I'm really interested in a halo game after halo 1
<NOT TO BE TAKEN AS WAA PORT> I wish I could play this on a console I have or PC :(<NOT TO BE TAKEN AS WAA PORT>

You know what this tells me?

You need to play more Slayer Pro.

OMG! Just found out that I can check my medals on Bungie net and clicking the little + next to my own name will display how many of each Medal I collected...*faints* :lol

Invasion has the potential to be incredible with some revisions, though I'm liking Invasion Slayer a great deal more. However, I think I'd rather play straight up Spartan v. Spartan with the same rules, and make it 8v8. While I can understand why Invasion is 6v6, since it channels the players through certain spaces, Slayer really spreads the field and still doesn't even use half the map (the Phase 1 area of Invasion).

Yeah. After playing a lot of games of Invasion, I think I'd rather have it as Spartan vs. Spartan or Elite vs. Elite. Then again, I won't be able to use any human weapons if it were Elites vs. Elite. :(
To end on a happy note, here's some pr0n for Dax (aka, Pro Pile love). Note how long that poor Warthog lasts.
You got like four kills in a span of less than a minute! Awesome.

Anyway, this dude on Bnet contacted me to see if I was willing to post his impressions for him seeing as how he has yet to be approved. For reasons understood, he didn't want to post on the Bungie forums.
Halo Reach Feedback (Invasion)

Hello NeoGAF! First off I'm not a member of NeoGAF, I applied a few months ago hopefully will get approved soon, but that will happen when the time comes. Anyway off to constructive feedback that can help us (the players) enjoy the game for many years to come. i Hope ;)

Invasion

This game has amazing potential and a few collective tweaks and this gametype will be amazing!

Elite Spawn 1st Phase: Perhaps the best fix on Boneyard is to move the elite spawn a little closer to the entry, this way the elites won't get pinged from above while getting to the objective. This solution may have to add 5 seconds more to capture the territory.

Objective 2: I think the 2nd objective is more challenging for the Spartans to defend, although Spartans can spawn outside one of the objective capture points. The elites can capture it very fast. Not sure how to fix this one, I do have a few ideas for discussion. Extend the capture time by 5 seconds? Give the Spartans a rocket launcher spawn on phase 2 (just one rocket spawn in the vehicle bay) not a load out, similar to the weapon drop the elites get when phase 1 is unlocked.

Objective 3: overall I think phase 3 is the best so far not sure if I would change much here. Perhaps change the return time of the core making it about 5-10% faster?

Invasion Slayer: I think this is a super fun game type: here is what I think could fix it.

Only one half of the map is utilized there is a bunch of places to go. One thing that could open it up more is territory weapon captures could be moved over to the unused half more, but to make this happen more spawn points across the map for both sides would be needed. There is a ton of space lets use it!

General items for both modes:

Spawn on Your Bro: great concept, but when my bro is trying to spawn on me a countdown timer when he is going to spawn would be a great help... Use Case; right now it is hard to tell when your bro will spawn and if I need to roll out to help other teamates. I need to be able to decide quickly to tell my bro to spawn at another point or if it would be better for me to wait on him to spawn. This is why the spawn countdown timer would be sweet!
Load Outs: To make it more competitive I would like to see one load out of the Spartans be on the Covey side like in round 2 & 3. For Example: the elites could choose to spawn with a DMR, and the Spartans could choose to spawn with a sword. I'm not sure these weapons would be the right solution and what ability to put with them I do think this could be discussed a little more.

Vehicles: Warthog is best of the bunch but I think the turret is to slowIn my few experiences with the turret I found it more difficult to acquire targets then it has been in prior renditions. I didn't have a problem with overheating the gun yet Question for Bungie, will this also be true for turrets (slow movement and overheating) that are placed in the game on tripods?

Banshee & Ghost: seem to slow add a 10-20% speed increase for standard movement and increase the boost to match the normal speed increase. Also I think the controls for the banshee should mirror that of Halo 3, because right now the Y (press to toggle fire modes) adds to much time to choosing the correct fire mode to be effective in battle.

Wraith & Scorpion: Vehicle are not as strong as the warthog (at least it seems that way) I think the Wraith feels slower and the boost is not as effective, increase speed a little and the range/duration of the boost a little could solve most of the strength & ability problems. Scorpion I think a speed increase would help solve most of the same issues.

Team Colors: I am not a fan of how MM spits the teams up. This UI leads for the players to think that invasion is more of a multi-team game instead of 6v6 team game. If you're Spartans (all green) or elites (all purple) you should be teamed up as all six, but linked to know who your battle bro is.

Overall I really see the potential here! Hats off to Bungie for trying something new and fresh, I know they are busting Hump to make the best game they have ever made. Is it a challenge? Hell yes it is, but I know they are up to the task and can deliver an amazing product.

If Dax01 has quoted me on a post Thanks a lot. Hopefully I can get approved to post soon. I just really wanted to reach out and get some fresh ideas out there! Thanks for reading this.

This is why I actually prefer Invasion Slayer in some instances. It's a little bit more equal for both sides, it gives you more opportunities to try out the weapons (e.g. the grenade launcher on the Spartan side, which I love), and it simply takes a little bit longer. A round of normal Invasion can be over far too quickly sometimes.

Ok, just played a few games of Reach for the first time last night. Why isn't the grunt head an emblem in this game? WTF, it's been in there for Halo 2, 3, and ODST, but not for Reach? I need this, or my soul will die.

I'll save my impressions until after some more games, but right now my biggest complaint is that I spend more time focusing on my reticle instead of the enemy I'm supposed to be shooting.

You know what this tells me? I still need to learn when to use the pistol and when to use the AR.

Whats your overall K/D ratio, if its positive it probably tells you that your doing the right thing by using the Pistol a lot and shold probably carry on avoiding using the AR. :lol

I really don't mind that half of the map isn't used on Boneyard; the 2nd half is plenty big, and it just means that you can head on over to the first half if you just want to tool around in a vehicle without getting blown up from four directions :lol

I was out last night, and it took me a long time to catch up on this thread this afternoon at work. Things got pretty fractious, huh?

Right now I'm enjoying Halo: Reach immensely. I think it has the clear potential to be my favourite game in the series, and one of my favourite multiplayer games. But I also agree that this beta is much more apparently a beta than the equivalent exercise for Halo 3 was, when the mechanics and core gameplay seemed a lot safer and secure even at an early stage.

This makes me afraid for Reach.

If the game is launching in September as expected, there is a great deal to be done in relatively little time. Now, I don't think anything is fundamentally broken, and some of the basic changes that seemingly infuriate many, such as the decreased jump or the melee system, don't bother me in the least. (In fact, I like the new melee, and I think once it works entirely as intended [see latest BWU], then it will be the fairest and most interesting implementation of those mechanics in a Halo game yet.)

That said, there are hundreds of tiny, niggling things that I think could be tweaked or adjusted to make this game better, deeper, and more fun for most people, and I'm worried Bungie simply won't have the time to get to everything. I want the "definitive" Halo game to have the level of polish and solidity it should possess. I don't think I've ever felt as invested in a videogame still in development.

I really, really feel like sitting down and drafting my complete thoughts on the beta once it's done, right down to the tiniest detail of loadouts, and then sending it to Bungie directly. Because I think they're squatting over a very impressive but very delicate machine right now, and one or two wrongheaded tweaks (or more likely the absence of the right tweaks) could result in a game that's merely very good.

I guess the best 'canonical' way to explain sprint is that the Spartan simply chooses not to have a AA which would weigh him down, and so can move at full pace.
No, it actually makes sense that sprinting in an armor that weights a ton requires a decent energy outburst. I don't think Bungie will have much trouble explaining why sprinting is an armor ability in the canon. Also, I do believe sprinting is on par with all the other abilities, it might not look as cool, but it's as effective.

Emblem selection in general looks very limited in the beta, so I'm sure the Grunt ones will be in the full game.
I mean... they have to be, right?

I need this one:

There isn't any "decent energy outburst" required for a Spartan to run/sprint at top speed. It's all them and has little to do with their MJOLNIR armor.

Spartan inside "territory" throws grenade out

http://i40.tinypic.com/2zxwi9u.jpg
Grenade seems to hit invisible wall and bounces back into "territory", killing me.
Here is a film of it:
http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/FileDetails.aspx?fid=909980

There seems to be a lot of trajectory problems with grenades. I have thrown grenades that randomly go to the left and right for w/e reason. Seems like they lock on to some object and just fly to it. I have seen grenades hit the flag and bounce off like crazy also.

Saw this in the wallpaper thread in the OT

I don't care too much about graphics, but I wish the game actually looked this good. Just look at that detail.

My initial impressions of the AR were off. It's a bit underpowered and a smart pistol user will outgun a smart AR user anytime. I think they need to bump up its damage or tighten the spread a little.

Yeah....Photo mode though :P The IQ in-game is nowhere near the level it is in that (or any) image.

I don't really care. It has no effect on the game play. It would be nice if it were possible for the visuals to be that good at all times though :( Bungie worked so hard to put all of these details in the game, but most of them are washed out or not displayed to their full potential in-game.

It was the same dilemma with Halo 3. People complained about it having sub-par visuals, while photos taken from the Theater showed how good the game truly looked. Whatever...

Drop shield with AR.

Switch to Handgun for headshot.

Did it a couple times last night instead or reloading but I'm not a good enough player to discern if its a viable strategy or not.

Ok, I did some digging into the disc read errors I'm getting with the beta and did a small writeup. Hopefully this helps fellow players and hopefully someone from Bungie picks this up, too.

Unfortunately this has been a problem throughout this console generation. If only consoles had the juice required to run these games with 4xAA and 16xAF, they would look sooo much better. And it's definitely number 1 on my list of what I want to see used in the next generation of consoles.

Reach looks fantastic enough as it is.

1.1

Not fantastic, but serviceable from a hardcore (11+ days) CoD player who spent the first hour of this game zooming into people's crotches rather than meleeing :lol

I think perhaps what I need to be doing is backing away rather than rushing. My top weapon is melee, which probably explains all the deaths to AR. It seems I find myself running in with a pistol a lot. I should be maintaining a healthy, mid-range distance if I'm going to main the pistol. Does that sound about right?

But it would still look oh so much better with what I mentioned. Just look at how much better Halo 3 looked in the photo mode pictures compared to ingame.

umm it looks like that, just not with all that AA.

Any game would look better if it were developed on more expensive hardware.

Yet in every other Halo game they seem to move like they are stuck in molasses, while we hear how uber awesome and fast they are in the novels and such.

Looks be increasing the game resolution just like Halo 3 did in picture mode as well. It's not just adding AA

Haha, thats not too bad, trust me though, stick with the Pistol. :D Individual weapon K/D ratio's dont mean anything, you may die to the AR a lot, but the Pistol is the weapon you will get the most kills with.

Out of interest whats your CoD setup?

Thats gameplay design choice, the novels shouldnt infringe on gameplay in my personal opinion. It would be cool if they infringed on the story, but gameplay comes first!

Your point? That was just a gameplay decision by Bungie. I mean, I'm not going to look at how ODSTs are able to beat down Brutes in Halo 3: ODST as proper canon.

He mentions, right in that post, that installing ODST doesn't work:

Chittagong said:
Solutions that do NOT work
• Trying a different (even brand new) Halo 3 ODST disc
• Emptying the Xbox 360 cache
• Re-downloading the Beta
• Installing the Halo 3 OSDT to the HDD

I've decided that one of my favorite things to do in Reach right now is to lure a player with the hammer out of his hiding place, using radar and a jetpack, and then simply flying backwards out of his reach and gunning him down. Sucker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:lol
It's probably one of the most pathetic and humorous things I've seen so far.

EDIT: 2 Things I've learned from watching Dax's rendered videos.
1: Pro Pipe is OP
2: Dax is a camping hooker :lol

Thank you bungie for rendered videos. It's so awesome watching vids while at work :D

Except for the jaggies, it actually looks better ingame for me. Everything is so more detailed, vibrant and sharp, and then when I press the Photo button and it cleans it up and becomes all washed out and pops less.

The pro pipe is anything but overpowered.

Anyone noticing the graphical anomaly that occurs when you strafe left, right, left, right on a wall with a straight vertical line. The vertical line gets distorted and bends. I have never seen anything like this in any other game. Looks almost like an optical illusion. Try it. I hope they fix this before release!

In invasion, it's pretty much the best spawn weapon evar. It effectively destroys the effectiveness of any vehicle, and it can be used to stop the slow-moving core carrier dead in his tracks.
