Halo: Reach Beta Thread

These constant player drops are pissing me off in Invasion. This community is starting to suck even more than Halo 3. When people aren't dropping, no one wants to stick together and play as a team but go off by themselves and get picked off one by one.

Older HUD, alpha perhaps. I didn't mind ODST's look to be honest. Felt different. Halo Reach just has a few transparency issues with some elements on the HUD now.

The Halo 3 Beta had the same issues.

I can't work out whether you're saying the first is a bullshot or that the game looks better, because to me there's not much difference at all. Besides the lighting in the first I actually think the second looks nicer, particularly in the geometry levels of the mountains in the background.
Not really saying either. (Although that rainbow on the waterfall is hawt) Just an old campaign shot vs MP in the same environment, showing the differences. Mainly just for fun, since I recognized that part of the map and took the screen.

yo urk I sent in one of the films you asked for in the BWU. Bam. It's a dude not being able to move respawn, etc. in invasion for the remainder of the match after a blackscreen. I hope it's useful.

you can't argue that the radar in the yellow-tinted hud is a metic fuckton more legible than the one in the beta. I am head over heels in love with it.

also, the post processing in the fist shot is amazing, even if it's nothing like what people expect Halo to look like. I like my games as monochrome as possible. *shrugs*.

also, it would be awesome if we could unlock more HUD colors as we progress in cRs, kind-of how Wipeout HD unlocks more HUD designs as you play.

I didn't realize but the description if you save a film says Overlook on easy...

Not always. Some one posted a screen earlier and it said Overlook on Heroic. Which is interesting. Seems they're expecting differences in network conditions depending on difficulty.

I'm hoping that Firefight's been scaled up just a tad. Remember that rumour of Scarabs being in Invasion? That can't have come from nowhere.

I hate to break it to you, but the "Scarabs in Invasion" came from a journalist who didn't know the actual names of the vehicles in Halo. He confused a Wraith with a Scarab.

I love this idea! BUNGIE!!!!!

I like the background in the alpha screen better because you can see more detail in the the satellite. Also, the trees make it look more exotic. Everything else is better in the Beta.

I noticed this too. I prefer the ground texture in the Alpha, also.

I love this new ban system if you quit. My Xbox or just general connection to certain games loves dropping out every second game and so I'm now banned (I know, only for 30 minutes or so). The irony, I play almost exclusively with my friends and it never bothers them when I eventually drop. I guess due to the nature of the system it would be impossible to decipher between a "pro-quitter" (someone who quits because he/she is an ass, poor loser etc, doesn't play with friends) and those that just have shitty luck.

Oh well, I'll just admire the Network Test 1 playlist screen until I can play it at a friend's house. :)

Network Test 1

:O best thang on the beta!O.O

Must be working better for you than me. This shit is the most laggy part of the entire game. Sometimes I just sit mid animation and do nothing while the enemies kill me. I can't move at all - this happens very often. Is there an explanation of what to do in each mode within the beta or do I have to go to bungie.net and figure it out?

Disregard my previous post. There is no way for Bungie to seperate the quitters from the internet connection droppers. Sadly it's not a case of calling up tech support, they already said the connection is fine.

Often when the game "restarts" or a new host is selected the entire playing field loses their loadouts. This happen to anyone else?

Yep, happened to me once.

Network Test 1, as beautiful as it was, just wasn't fun for me. Playd a few games, I have some sick sticks (case 1 and case 2 if anyone will be kind enough to render) but ultimately 3 on 3 doesn't sit right with me. Don't get me wrong, the whole 3 on 3 is kinda irrelevant as it is testing the netcode for a greater good so to speak but I dunno :p Quitters on the opposing team never help too.

I thought the Spartan colours were your own on NT1, however I noticed they weren'y. Are they determined by your loadout?

Whilst I believe there is fun to be had, I certainly agree that 3 on 3 feels really sparse but it seems to irrelevant considering the testing going on in the background.

If it was possible to play that map as a regular multiplayer map, I'd love to see it. Maybe bump up the player count on each team and keep the power weapons to a minimum and it would make for a unique Team Slayer map. I could also see it working for Bomb and Territories too. Really hope we get the chance to use all of the available maps for traditional multiplayer.

what exactly ARE they testing in NT1, though? I don't see anything too special about it except for the amazing graphics.

They said they won't reveal what they are testing until closer to release.

Firefight or something similar but funkier is most likely though.

Ah just got home from driving back from school. 7 hours and 1 speeding ticket later, I'm excited to finally play NT1. Yo VH6, you better be on tonight homes.

At the very least they're testing stuff like host migration and matchmaking for the campaign networking. It also seems likely that they're stress-testing stuff in the background relating to Firefight.

from the BWU:

In a recent playtest, we picked up on a problem in the way our collision model was calculating headshots. Coupled with rumblings from the community regarding some inconsistencies in the Beta’s headshot capable weapons, we were able to identify an issue that you may have already experienced.

In certain circumstances, explicitly those where you would typically score a headshot in the lower range of the target zone (for the layman, that’d be the face and head region), we’ve discovered that bullets are impacting a few pixels lower than they should, plunging into the chest volume instead of the head. This often allows an unshielded opponent to remain upright after your crack shot should have taken the legs out from under ‘em.

snip...

The great news is that you now have an excuse for why you’re not landing way more headshots. If you’re in Bronze or Steel, undoubtedly you’re actually an Onyx level player. If you’re Onyx, you’re like Painite or something. Pick a rare mineral and run with it.

heh, I've been saying this for the whole beta, It's so nice to feel vindicated. :lol

:lol

Overlook looks amazing. Seriously, the amount of detail in every little thing is fantastic. I hope some extra art passes on Powerhouse will make it this good looking.

I really enjoy Generator Defense, but its just soo laggy. Other than that it actually is pretty fun. I love the look of the weapon drop. Invasion needs to use that.

Generator Defense is pretty fun so far but overlook runs really bad. My fps had to be less than 20 most of the time. Not sure if it had to do with the network test or they just need to work on the stage still. Either way can't wait for the game to come out.

Gen. Defense is pretty fun! :D My only problem:

COOLDOWN NEEDS TO BE LONGER. I know GD probably won't be in the final game, but seriously, 2/3 second CD for the lock is insane.

Quit too many games and we’ll put you on a week long “probation.” Consider that a warning, not a ban. If you quit another game during your probationary period, however, you’ll be required to sit out of Matchmaking for fifteen whole entire minutes.

If you had a legitimate reason to step away, likely this won’t be seen as a severe punishment. One might imagine you may not even notice. You’ll be legitimately away doing something legitimately important while your fifteen stinkin’ minutes of shame slip away completely unnoticed by anyone.

Of course, if you’ve just jumped out because you didn’t like the way things were working out in a CTF match, making those very same things that weren’t working out work out way worse for everyone else, you’ll probably feel every minute of the timeout as you mash the A button in hopes of getting a fresh start. Then you’ll make a post to our feedback forums to let everybody know that you had an exceedingly legitimate reason to step away. “How dare u, bungee?!” If that’s the position you find yourself in, my advice is to return to the preceding paragraph above. We’ve already got your use case covered.
:lol :lol :lol
I love bungie...
