Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Dax01 said:
It is in-game. It's the opening cinematic of Reach (well, the first two and a half minutes).
Wasn't the first Halo 3 trailer supposedly in-game as well? That cinematic was in the final game, but it obviously was running at a lower resolution. Hopefully whatever they show is representative of what the Reach engine can do.

How do you know we won't get some when they post the trailer up on Bnet?

Meh, I know we'll get a dribble or two if we close our eyes and hope really hard. I just don't fancy reading an update the day before a big reveal where you know he can't really talk about the big can of worms that's just a few hours away.

"No new Reach info for you plebs, wait until tomorrow. It's awesome by the way. For now, here's Shishka and Sketch's Comedy Filler Cosplay Picture Idea Drawing of the Week!"

It doesn't matter whatever the Halo 3 trailer supposedly was. This is the first two minutes of the opening cinematic. As in, what we see on Saturday is what we'll see when we boot up the game and start the campaign in 2010.

Given that the cutscenes of all the Halo games aren't much better looking than what you see while you're playing, what we see on Saturday will be closed to, if not exactly match, what we'll see during actual gameplay.

I'm just hoping we get a screen like we had for the Starry Night Ad.

Dunno where you are getting the assumption from.
Just responding to the hypothetical posed previously, nothing more nothing less. I won't be interested in seeing anything except BF:Halo out of Reach, so my comment was made in that regard. Didn't think I'd be venturing into untoward territory considering this is a speculation thread after all, apologies if so.

I assumed you were referring to the "perks" from the info from the earlier leak which many folks have misjudged or misread as Halo adapting the Perk system from Modern Warfare. This is obviously not the case, even the leaked info spells it out, although the leaker using the term "perk" was probably not wise considering most people would assume a MW-esque system from the name alone.

Feel free to speculate all you want, I was just trying to clarify up some misconceptions that folks will have due to the leak, which I now do not think you were referring to. So have my apologies instead. =)

What about this game doesn't look seemingly big?

Yeah, but it's The Fall of Reach, its not really a new story. it seems more like ODST to me. We already know who lives and dies, what they are going to do and why.

All we have is speculation at this moment. Come tomorrow you may be right or wrong.

Really? Consider me more hyped for the BWU than the Reach reveal then. :D

This is not true.
Did everyone somehow know who of the troops was going to live in ODST? I definitely didn't. How can you know what characters will live or die just from a teaser trailer?
And there's a lot more going on at Reach than "covenant comes, planet asplodes." I'm confident we'll get something really big.

Audiences were quite upset when they realised they knew the ending to Titantic. You may be on to something.

I was thankfully spared the torture of watching that movie. To this day I have no idea why I was so lucky

Whats so big about this? its not like its a new story right?

Who said the story would follow the book?

I find it hard to believe the game is going to follow the book or any major part of the book. I image it will be like Halo 3: ODST in how Bungie was able to tell a story in New Mombasa in and around the same time frame when we had already been to New Mombasa twice (Halo 2 & Halo 3).

I mean HALO comes right after the book right? "The fall of Reach" and the authors work closely with Bungie or 343 Studies? The games and the books set the lore/canon, so I personally don't think there is much room for deviation with out breaking it. In that sense its kind of a given whats gonna take place right? So whats the big deal as it not a new chapter or story.

Wasn't the Halo movie going to be based upon the Fall of Reach? Or was that just wishful thinking of the fans?

If so, I wonder how much of any script treatments or pre-production assets might be getting some use in the Reach game. It'd be a shame to let whatever work was being done just lie in some drawers somewhere.

And holy shit, after seeing how MS marketed ODST with that epic commercial I can't wait to see what MS can do with Reach. As long as it actually fits the mood and basic story points in the game I'll be satisfied. I just didn't like that both the ODST and Halo 3 commercials referenced things that didn't come close to happening in the game's themselves. There has to be a better middle ground.

The ODST commercial was a definite improvement of the one for Halo 3. Also I looks like the commercials weren't marketing the game but the Halo franchise and the universe associated with it.

Have you read the book in awhile? There's a lot to tell within the context of the battle. Hell, even if the game copies the book precisely, that's still something to make a big deal out of. The Battle of Reach was the largest UNSC-Covenant engagement of the entire war. It's one thing to read about a battle, it's another to experience it in a videogame.

You're absolutely right, and I'm all for marketing the universe and not just the master chief storyline (although the extended universe seems to have less direct bearing on the word "Halo" which could get kindof weird. Can't say for sure though as I've read very little of the extended fiction).

I guess I just don't want a repeat of those Master Chief "believe" ads, especially with the brute-held chief holding up the sticky grenade.

I don't think they are going to deviate away from what happen in the book. The book didn't really cover much of the actual combat that occurred on the ground. From the little teaser they showed at E3 I was also under the impression that while we might see some familiar faces that we are probably going to see a lot of new faces, thus the Sierra 320 & Sierra 259 (Spartan numbers higher than what was selected for the first class). Reach is the military capital of human civilization, and the battle that occured on Reach was much larger than what we experienced on Earth in Halo 2 & 3, so it leaves them with the ability to really make the game bigger.

It's not like we have a Halo movie to watch instead =/

(oh and @whoever asked about the Halo movie being about Reach, the screenwriter for the first Pirates of the Caribbean did an early draft of as script for it. That might be what you're thinking of)

Well I would say that the ODST ads are microsoft figuring out that the believe ads were goofy. Also it would be nice if they actually did a commercial for the game, the Halo 2 one was pretty good at its time.

My point was they could *bullshot* it like they did with the first Halo 3 cutscene they showed and render it at a higher resolution than the real game will have.

I thought those ads were epic and a lot of artistry that went into them. Better than a lot of CG bullshot commercials that try to pass off as gameplay. The only thing that pissed me off about them was that the game didn't convey the same sense of war that the commercials did and that whole little montage with Master Chief never happens.

Clocking in at two minutes and thirty seconds, it's "basically the opening of the game," and will give gamers the first look at the Halo Reach engine running in real-time. You'll meet the game's characters for the first time, complete with dialogue, all backed by an original score by Bungie's musical daddy, Marty O'Donnell.

"It's been a couple of years since we've seen new technology from Bungie," he explains. "As soon as you see Reach, you'll realize that these guys have definitely upped the ante when it comes to visual firepower of the engine."

Exactly my problem too. Loved it for setting a sad, heroic mood. But it was completely inconsistent with the feel of playing the game. Bungie just needs to improve on their in-game storytelling, because while the scenario in Halo 3 was supposed to be mankind's last , desperate stand against overwhelming odds, it sure as hell didn't feel like it. I only give this criticism to Halo 3 though, as CE, 2, and ODST all told their story rather well.

Any bets on whether Bungie will take Infinity Ward's cue and restrict party chat in certain Halo Reach playlists?

Since we're all specalatin'

Nope, restricting chat is pointless in CoD, and it will be pointless in Halo.

But I know I will :(

Call of Duty 7?

I'm hoping for just a logo of New IP, but that's probably not until E3 2011, if not before that. :/

God I hope not. I don't really see the reason to either.

I don't think the ads were bad (the complete opposite actually), just that they weren't representative of the tone of the actual game. I can't have been the only one who felt a serious disconnect between the mood of the ads and the game itself.

Weren't the ads outsourced to a company kept in the dark about the game's actual plot? Lets just say that it shows.

Edit: Come to think of it, this seems to be the way MS goes about making game commercials in general. I could level the same critique at The Gears 1 and 2 ads, Lost Odyssey, etc.

ODST came closest to matching the spirit of the game it was selling though, and damn do I love that lil mini-movie.
