Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

A huge problem I have so far with Reach is Spartans having accents, especially Jorge-052.

Spartan-IIs were conscripted between 4-6 years old, and raised in the UNSC camp on Reach, raised by native English speakers and english-speaking AIs. Given that accents really only occur in children learning a 2nd language after the minimum age of 10, this is just ridiculous to me, and a lame excuse for diversity and 'cultural awareness'. If you raise someone of any ethnicity in another culture/language starting at 4-6 yrs old, you won't see that cultural clinging and forced accent - the melding will naturally happen. Especially with genetically significant Spartans.

All of the members of Noble Team (sans Jorge of course) are Spartan IIIs, who were typically older than Spartan IIs when conscripted. I believe the stated age range is 10-14. And if you learn the language from someone with an accent, it's likely you will end up with an accent. Even though children from Britain and the US grow up learning and speaking the same language, they don't sound the same.

Best part was one of the guys on the receiving end quitting right after he's sniped. Dude realized there just wasn't any point after that.

Carter, Emile, and Jun (the latter two have accents) were from Alpha company of the S-IIIs, and GoO states that all of the 497 candidates were between 4,5 and 6 yrs old.

The only person who can MAYBE be explained is Kat - but her accent is so thick it just doesn't make sense. Unless she commonly speaks russian/whatever eastern European they are making her, she shouldn't have that thick of an accent. None of them should.

If you haven't already, you need to play some Infection on this map. One of the most creative pieces I've seen in a long while that actually has a good flow to it.

The default spawns on that map need a lot of work. I've played that map quite a bit and the spawns need some serious fixing.

Me too. After food.

Does anyone know of a stats tracking program that tells you the total time you've spent playing matchmaking? I know it's possible because on the Bungie.net stats it shows you what each game's length was. I would really, really love this so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: Found one! http://www.bbehr.net/H3Opp/index.htm
Oh god....

Playtime: 21 Days 6 Hours 41 Minutes 49 Seconds

That is insane...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that. I changed them immediately and re-saved it, and that was a while back.:D

You're right, the range I stated was incorrect, that was the range when they "went active," though the 3 you mention in the first sentence were all at least 7 when conscripted, going by birthdates on Bungie.net and the start of the SIII program (2531). Carter was 11, Emile was 8, and Jun was 7 (and just for reference Kat was 7 when Beta Company was created).

You're still ignoring the main reason anybody has an accent: the people they learned the language from had one. If you take some one from, say, Arkansas, who only knows 1 language and compared their manner of speaking to mine, they would sound differently than I despite both of us only knowing 1 language: English.

And you claim that Cat has a very thick accent, yet we have heard her say a grand total of 1 word.

I'm curious to see if we can tell that Jorg is a Spartan II on the battlefield. In each Halo game, we've been either more powerful than or equl to (in ODST) the other good guys on the field. That won't be the case in Reach.

ME? You blame ME?

All I did was point out the site that suggested that the artwork proved that Killzone > Reach (and mentioned that I thought the argument was silly). I mean, it's not like anyone reads HBO's front page...

Takes very long for me to download all my games, think that's a bad sign. Although I am sure there are a lot of people here who have a lot more then 2300 games.

2800, still downloading... Had I had Live from Halo 2's get go, I would have way more games, since there were fewer games back then and I had more free time. But 2800 (not counting LANs and local play) is still a shit ton :lol

CVG Preview, some good info (found article via HBO):

While the familiar triumvirate of gun, grenade and melée remains in place, the armoury has been streamlined to accentuate the differences between each type of weapon and remove duplicates.

Guns are much more powerful than in previous games, and the human weapons now hit instantaneously - there's no need to lead a target to compensate for lag.

online campers will be dismayed to find that the sniper rifle has been nerfed by greatly increasing its reload time.

The Covenant have also received upgrades to ensure their energy weapons aren't overshadowed by the rattling machine guns and ejecting brass of the Spartan forces. Plasma shots hit home with meaty thuds, and continue burning for a moment while stuck to their target, giving visual and audio feedback that leaves players in no doubt why their shield has been obliterated.

The shield is slower to recharge than in Halo 3, and there's an underlying health bar that will, presumably, need to be topped up via med packs - like much of Halo Reach, all of this is still subject to regular tweaking and testing, as the Bungie team search for the optimum settings.

Outside of the player's immediate sphere of influence, distant battles play out using lower level AI and flocking behaviour designed to look as close as possible to the real thing. Only once you're within range do these enemies become sentient.

Not only are the battles more heavily populated than ever before, the environments that contain them are spread over a wider area. In missions where there are multiple objectives, you'll often be free to choose the order in which you tackle them.

If you're playing a four-man co-op Campaign with friends, the game engine can cope with everybody splitting up and doing their own thing, at least to a certain degree. You might take a buddy to clean up a nest of Covenant snipers in one area, then see the other two players fighting in the distance, down on the main battlefield. As in Halo 3, you'll be able to take a party of friends through all of the game's modes, including Theatre, Forge and some as-yet unannounced additions to Campaign that Bungie are planning in order to add replay value.

Good news apart from the Sniper Rifle. One of the best guns in terms of fun/balance in H3, I hope the reload time isn't too huge..

While we can't really take word for word, I do wonder what has been removed.

EDIT: Aside from Spike Grenades and Flame Grenades of course.

Astounding - apparently my total is

21 Days 5 Hours 39 Minutes 52 Seconds

According to this app, you've played Halo 3 for 62 minutes more than I have. :lol (Well, if we're going to be ACCURATE, 61 minutes and 57 seconds.)

I'm guessing the Spiker is a prime candidate; it added exactly nothing that the AR/SMG/Plasma Rifle did.

Wow.. That is actually kind of incredible...

With playtime that high for both of us. Having it be within an hour, that is just crazy...

Go play 62 minutes of Halo!

Edit: Watch This!

I didn't make this! Sorry I should have been more clear about this... Logan made it a long time ago... And I just dug it up on my computer this afternoon. I wanted to know what you guys all thought of it.

Well, there's always that zebra on Uplift Reserve in ODST.
I must have replayed Uplift Reserve four or five times this past weekend - switching off between using vehicles exclusively and not using vehicles at all.

Awesome level. It's probably my favorite from ODST.

Wow, Bungie really hates the Sniper! I personally dont see why they feel the need to nerf it so much. Its very rare that a person on the other team can dominate you with it and even then its not all that difficult to kill him if you get close enough. If a person is so good they can snipe well and keep themselves alive they deserve the quick kills in my opinion.

Videos like the one posted earlier today where the guy dominated with the sniper on valhalla would be impossible with Reach :(, even if your really good, the time limitations would make those chances impossible.

It wouldn't be impossible, you'd just have to think twice about reloading after taking one shot which almost everyone does in Halo 3 right now.

We have no idea how much the sniper is being "nerfed". That's CVG's interpretation of the comment that the sniper rifle has a slightly longer span between shots. They could be bumping the time between shots from .7 seconds to .9 seconds for all we know. Seems like the normal kind of balancing any sequel goes through when the weapons are tweaked.

Sniper is definitely the weapon that needs the most tweaking. Glad Bungie is working on that and not, you know, making spikers or plasma rifles worth picking up. Bungie needs to have local Halo nerds come into the studio and tell them what works and does not work. They seem to have difficulty finding map flaws and balance issues themselves.
