Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories Announced (Wii U, PC, iOS, and Android)

Here's what my question is over the rights.

Can Natsume have full rights to use anything from games they've localized? They still can release the classics on VC, so they definitely haven't had those yanked from them.

What about characters, assets, and potential for remakes should they choose? What I'm thinking is maybe any game post-Story of Seasons is under XSEED and Marvelous creative-wise, but as long as it's pre-SoS, Natsume could use them as they please? So they might still have a shared ownership perhaps? I mean didn't Natsume commission Puzzle de Harvest Moon and Frantic Farming on DS themselves?

If they do, an HD port of A Wonderful Life and Magical Melody probably would have been cheaper to produce and be more of a commercial success.

Interesting... Not sure what to think of the fact that it's also going to be a mobile game. But i'll be keeping my eye on this, for now.

Kind of pathetic how Natsume is using the good reputation built from decades of localised Boku Monogatari games to sell crap. Their localisations weren't even that good.

They were also buggy. Marvelous dissolved the partnership the for a reason.

I dunno why people are upset at the mobile lineup

Harvest Moon is about the most safe game I can think of to be on all those platforms and not suffer anywhere because of it. Mechanically there's nothing timing or imput heavy that would hurt it on any of those platforms at all.

Also, I can think of a reason for those specific choices: they're probably using Unity.

Actually, I wonder if issues over that is why both Marvelous and Natsume have changed up their art direction for their respective games.

Nah, kind of pathetic and shitty of Marvelous to strip the IP away from Natsume after cultivating the franchise in the west for nearly 20 years.

Well there could be worries about the game being designed to fit the mobile business model I guess.

Natsume wasn't exactly doing a good job and Marvelous has XSeed now so it makes sense.

Oh wow I was saying how I wish there was an Android / iOS Harvest Moon less than a month ago :o Hoping for sprite-based but the Wii U / PC releases as well makes me doubt that'll happen =(

If they gave a shit about 'quality' they could have extended a bit more support to Natsume in the process. This is a money issue, not a quality issue.

Natsume's localizations are generally shitty period, so I'm not sure Marvelous could help much. Lets not forget, they screwed up the code for Rhapsody on the DS so bad, the end game content was inaccessible for the US release.

edit: Nevermind, I'm dumb.

NIS America.

Other than some spotty Engrish, Natsume does a decent enough job.

I'm going against the grain and say that I liked The Lost Valley, so I'm excited for this. There's room enough to love Harvest Moon and the game-series-formely-known-as-Harvest-Moon. This will be my first Harvest Moon game for PC; I will not buy it for Wii U.

In general I always buy the PC version of games over consoles. Aside from the usual reasons to do so, one of my main reasons is because I know that one day each console will eventually get old and be put away, probably never to be played again and will eventually stop functioning altogether. At least I will always have a PC in one form or another.

AWE-SOME.
Now we can expect this one to be either subpar and thus stimulate a proper HM to be developed in response, or actually be decent and maybe still have a proper HM be developed.

Let me dream, ok?

The game is apparently inspired by the original games of the series... That gives me some hope at least.

I hope it is a physical game for Wii U. :P

This will be the very first HD "Harvest Moon" game by the way.

Wonder if it will be top-down, 2D. That would be neat!

Hopefully it's a retail release on Wii U.

2D would be great. I could see that happening since it will be on mobile platforms too. Hope we see some screenshots soon!

What's a good Harvest Moons game for a new comer of the series? Be wanting to get into the series.

Harvest Moon 64, Back to Nature (available on PS1/PSP/PS3), and Friends of Mineral Town (GBA). I'm pretty sure most will agree that those were the best games in the series, and they're all relatively simple to get into.

You forgot the original. That one was a classic. The others I definitely agree with as well.

Wait a minute, did anyone here even play A-Train: City Simulator recently? It has a great localization. Natsume isn't amazing but it's not like they're hopeless...same goes for this next Harvest Moon. At least they claim they're listening to fan feedback and will focus more on the social elements for Seeds of Memories (this shows up in the PR statement, for example).

I'm cautiously optimistic, will get the PC version (I'm assuming digital distribution) if that gets positive word-of-mouth.

The platform split was chosen based on fan feedback. The Wii U thirst is real, they didn't just pull it out of a hat.

Lost Valley is not the shitshow that people presumed it would be and I think Natsume's series could massively improve with just a few sensible changes/editions. Adding back the village is an obvious first step.

Tabot is a Cave subsidiary btw.

It was, it hasn't been for a while now.

PC, huh? I don't have much confidence in them after their last attempt, but I'll keep an eye on it anyway.

I'd love to see the Marvelous games on PC.

Yes, yes, we get it. It's "fake" Harvest Moon because it's not the original developer. It doesn't need to be pointed out every 5 posts.

Fake is in sneer quotes why, exactly? Enjoy your soul-less rip-off if you like, but it should continue to be pointed out so people know exactly what they're getting.

We'll see what we're getting soon, but yeah this feels like the situation with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and ARMA 2 some years back. Codemasters never had a chance to compete even though they owned the IP.

Well, they're definitely running away from BokuMono. Story of Seasons probably gave them a hard as fuck time.

Good on them. Filling the gaps in Marvelous' strategy is a great idea, actually.

Platforms don't surprise me. Developed on PC using something like Unity, easy to port to mobile and Wii U. Mobile and Wii U are where more Harvest Moon fans are than PS4/XB1 anyway. Very cheap to release on PC as the lead platform. Probably developed with touch and clicking in mind too.

If it gets great reviews I'll play it but otherwise I'll skip. As far as I'm concerned FoMT and earlier are still far better than modern titles regardless of who's developing and they hold up graphically enough to replay.

Still waiting on a farming game to include gay marriage. If this "Harvest Moon" finally does it, I'll give it a shot.

I'd prefer if Story of Seasons beat them to the punch though.

Yet you don't mention the game freezes and translation hiccups in XSeed's Story of Seasons ;) Both factors involve Marvelous' handywork, unfortunately.

as the only person on GAF who enjoyed The Lost Valley, this is bought

I enjoyed it as well, but my biggest issue is the random factors relating to hybrid crops. There's nothing in the game that hints or guides players towards using certain fertilizers, planting on specific levels, or growing in a certain season to unlock all of the hybrids. There are still several of them that have not been discovered yet, and the game has been out for over six months. There were just too many unknown factors involved with trying to discover how a crop mutates into a new crop.

Players were expecting a standard Harvest Moon game when they received Lost Valley, and many were disappointed with the attempt at trying something new. The company took the feedback and implemented it in this latest version.

If you don't try something new every so often, things get stale.

Got super excited then remembered it's not called "harvest moon" anymore. Stupid Nastume, milking their naming rights :(

Kind of hard to milk something you own the rights to. You'll have to take any name issue up with Marvelous ;)

Not really interested in fake Harvest Moon.
I think losing the naming rights in the west is kind of a blunder on Marvelous's part. One of my friends and my sister are into Harvest Moon but not enough to understand things like who develops it and who has rights to the name. It was difficult trying to explain why you should get Story of Seasons and not Lost Valley.

I think Marvelous should come up with a new title for their series (unless they call them all Story of Seasons...) or just keep the Japanese title Bokujou Monogatari (they could even translate it literally into Farm Story or something). Either that or see if they can't buy the name back.

I was so fucking excited to read about this, this is literally the title I have been waiting on for the WiiU. This is by FAR and LONG my favorite game series of all time. The only game series I have collected, and own EVERY SINGLE TITLE complete in box for (US/JP), having played all of them.

And then I get to the bottom of the fucking article and these mother fuckers are cross developing this for iOS and Android. Like I needed another fucking reason to absolutely despise mobile gaming.

This is dead in the water and has practically killed a dream for me. They managed to fuck this up with the greed and disgusting mess that is mobile. I can't foresee this game being even remotely good if 2 of its platforms are iOS and Android. It has completely destroyed the potential this game had to be amazing on the WiiU.

Fuck.

Huh, Natsume is located in Burlingame? Learn something new every day.

Either way I'm looking forward to fake harvest moon (sorta) on Steam. I mean, the formula isn't hard at this point, and I know people are upset about what went down, but the game is probably about the same either way.
