Has Any Violence Or Gore In A Film Ever Truly "Shocked" You?

I'm generally pretty desensitised to violence in movies, but I remember the opening scene of Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 making me wince when I first saw it, mainly because it caught me off guard. I wasn't expecting the literal opening seconds of the film to have such a gory shot like that (it was almost framed like a jump scare). It was definitely memorable, though, and it lived inside my head rent-free for years.

When Robocop came out on VHS I was almost 7 years old and I wanted to watch it, I still don't know why or how I got interested in the movie, must have seen a trailer on TV or something. The neighbor kid who was a few years older than me just got the movie on VHS, but because of the content and my age, he would not let me watch while I was inside his house, but, he would let me watch the movie while I was outside his front door and could watch through a screened door. As a kid I always thought Robo was Robo, did not know his origin story, so the murder of Murphy scene shocked me, I don't think as a kid I fully understood what was going on, but I knew it was bad.

I don’t like head injuries really (I mean, who does?)

When I seen what happened Glen in the walking dead with Negan, it shocked me quite a lot at the time, but I wasn’t upset by it or anything as I know it wasn’t real. That scene is pretty brutal from memory.

you are it the walking dead GIF by FOXtvUK

I've recently watched "When Evil Lurks", and there's an specific scene there that made me go "Damn... They really went there"

I'm an horror fan that have probably watched more than 2.000 horror movies, and this was one of the only instances where I was "shocked" by gore.

If you've watched the movie, I'm talking about the scene where the guy drives at night

I'm very desensitized watching horror movies by entire life, like I don't jump jump scares and I really don't get scared by anything in movies or real life.. but I cannot watch pet semetery because I cannot handle watching small children get harmed.

RoboCop and RoboCop 2 as a kid, but still now to be honest, Eddie being ripped in half in The Lost World.

In teen years to adulthood, Munich (female spy murder), Hannibal (dinner scene), The Hills Have Eyes Remake (trailer scene), Evil Dead Remake, The Walking Dead (bat scene), Martyrs, The House That Jack Built. Probably forgetting something.

Jump scares aren't inherently scary. They startle you. It's an easy "scare" but there are more nuanced exceptions ofcourse.

Im with you regarding animals and small children.

Yes. Murphy's getting 300 bullet's making him twitch of the impact and scream while his hand was blown off with a shotgun close range at age 5.

Thanks Verhoeven
Wonder if your my old neighbour, we watched robocop with my neighbour and his two younger brothers at his house. I was around 13/14 I think same with him. His younger brother might have been a bit older. Still fun times. I am sure they didn’t want to stop watching g it.

I've realized I'm not into gore porn anymore if I ever was... Never watched Rotten.com. That shit is just not for moi.

Dismemberment or disemboweling in movies doesnt really phase me, but any realistic gore involving eyes, teeth, or nails makes me wince.

Perhaps. Did you have dandruff at that age? You smelled good fwiw.

Nah I was 5 or something

When your that young shit's way more intense and realistic.

And the psychological aspect in Robocop shouldn't be underestimated as well.

When i was in High School watching Fist of the North Star (1986) and seeing that buried guy getting his head sawed off mixed with all the psychedlic pastel color pallete used really felt intense.

Hostels 1 & 2 - The hanging eyeball in 1 and the "bath" in 2

Terrifiers 1 & 2 - The Bone Tomahawk scene in 1 and the poor girl getting salted in 2

Bone Tomahawk - The upside-down bifurcation. See also: Terrifier 1.

Hereditary - The implied gore of Charlie hitting the telephone pole plus them actually showing her head covered in ants later.

Irreversible - Fire extinguisher to the face

Never really be one to be phased on gore/horror, in the back of my mind there's always the niggle of 'it's not real anyway', even since a very young age

But..

One film that did mess with my head for a few days was..

Utterly grim. I had to actually check my doors were bolted for a few nights after :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Those were some truly sick fuckers to begin with, before throwing LSD into the mix.

I remember we watched it in an R.E. Lesson at school (it was last day before summer holidays. I think). All I remember is the R.E. Teacher laughing at peoples head exploding lol

I was about 7 when i whatched Friday the 13 part 3 the first time. And when jason stands in the barn behind a window without the mask in the end of the movie, that stuck in my head. Couldnt watch that part of the movie for many years and had to make excuses to miss it, like go to to the toilett and etc🤣

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I don't remember the title, but there was a scene where the guy puts a child inside a small metal box. The movie was already pretty violent but when that came up I said "oh heck no" and turned off the TV.

When Ed Norton Jr makes the black guy put his teeth on the curb. The sound editing of the teeth chattering on the concrete. Fuck.

The whole ending of requiem for a dream.

When the main character drills into his head in Pi.

The sexual violence in Kids is fucked up

I imagine seeing the ending of the fly for the 1st time is super messed up
