Has there been a jump in quality from 1 game to direct sequel such as mass effect 1 to 2?

I was going to say Helldivers II but I seen Street Fighter 2 & yeah that's the one!

Sidenote does Ms Pac-Man count? I know it didn't change much visually but it plays so much better .

Alot of obvious answers already. Uncharted 1 to 2, Assassin's Creed 1 to 2.

But...to me...GTA 2 to GTA 3 is probably the biggest jump. Or Metal Gear Solid to Metal Gear Solid 2. They literally redefined these 2 series into what they are today.

There used to be quite a lot of them. Less so nowadays. I mean Ragnarok on paper is better than the previous one and so is Spider-Man 2, but ultimately the majority will agree that the og's are the best and these are just two recent examples. In the past tho? A LOT. Warcraft 1-2-3, Starcraft 1-2, Witcher 1-2-3, Dishonored 1-2, Divinity Original Sin 1-2, Baldurs Gate, Pathfinder, Payday, Nioh, Xcom, Talos Principle, Doom games, Batman Arkham games, Hitman, etc.

Baldurs Gate 2 is much better than 1.

Super Mario Bros 3 is much better than 2.

Starfox 64 is much better than the previous game.

And Mass Effect 2 is more of a sidegrade imo. I'm currently playing it and sure, game's much more polished, plays better and has more budget than the previous game. But the overall story is worse, and there's less RPGing and more shooting. Still a very, very good game and probably my favorite in the franchise but yeah, not 100% and upgrade.

Metroid to Metroid II and again to Super Metroid.

Metroid is a classic but suffers from simplistic/annoying mechanics, basic gameplay controls and everything looking the same making navigation more confusing than it had to be. Starting at 30 hp was a fun middle finger! (*if you're unaware the starting max hp is 99) It had some nice chiptunes though.

Metroid II is a less appreciated classic due to being on the Game Boy. It tightened up the gameplay and added new mechanics but it too suffered from areas looking the same and confusing navigation which wasn't helped by it being way zoomed in due to the handheld's (lack of) power. The chiptunes, while not bad, also suffered from the handheld's sound capabilities. I personally find Game Boy sounds very shrill and annoying.

Super Metroid stepped up the game in every way possible. Fantastic pixel art and animations, far superior controls (Samus can FUCKING CROUCH AND AIM DIAGONALLY!) and the music is just sublime.

Mass Effect 2 was a slicker action shooter, but Mass Effect 1 had better role playing, better plot, better villains, better tone and atmosphere, so I consider 2 a downgrade from 1.
Came to basically post this. Mass Effect 2 was amazing the first time I played it. But on subsequent playthroughs of the trilogy its by far the weakest game. It's just filler to get to ME3.

Resident Evil 1 to Resident Evil 2 was a big jump. Resident Evil Zero to Resident Evil 4 was a massive jump.

Zelda: Majora's Mask to Zelda: Wind Waker was huge leap as well. Skyward Sword to Breath of the Wild was also huge.

GTA2 to GTA3 was a gigantic leap forward.

MGS1 to MGS2 was a massive jump forward.

Smash Bros. 64 to Smash Bros. Melee was nuts.

This is kind of a loophole considering Metroid 2 was a "demake" and "Metroid 3" was on hardware twice (or thrice) as powerful as Metroid 2....well played.

Dragon Age 1 to 2. Just backwards.
So... moving in the same direction as Mass Effect? =P

Okay, so it's not that bad, but what gains ME2 made came at the cost of the first's depth and complexity. It was so streamlined and dumbed down to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It basically ditched its RPG trappings to lean into bog standard third person cover shooting.

Borderlands 1 to 2. Maya was so much better than Lilith. And Axton was so much better than Roland.
Gameplay-wise, for sure--especially in terms of the upgrade trees--but in terms of characters, storytelling, and just overall tone? I agree 2 is better, but it wasn't an unmixed upgrade.

MGS2 to MGS3
MGS2 not only had better AI soldiers and a lot of unique ones to boot with their own personalities, it also had a lot more interactions with the game world (fucking ice cubes would melt if you knocked them out the glass) and different events happening in multiple playthoughs
While not completely gone, MGS3 has about 20% of that in comparison, also dropped from 60fps to 30fps.
Graphically it improved, but a lot was striped from MGS2.
Kinda a downgrade imo

Kojima traded detail for scope and scale with MGS3...which featured many many more environments, settings, equipment/weapons, combat options, etc. for the fps, details and nuance of MGS2.

That said MGS3 still had its fair share of Easter eggs and hidden details (esp with the camera and codec)

Already mention a few times on here but UC2 was that game for me. Went from a 8/10 to 10/10 masterpiece. The jump from GTA 2 to 3 was insane as well.

And as much as I love the GoW trilogy and 3, GoW 2018 smashed it out the park. Shame about its sequel though..

ME2 fucking sucked. I loved 1 and dropped 2 halfway thru. Changed a coherent consequential classic space narrative with an episodic soap opera and a ridiculous final villain. And one of the worst cases of knee high wall syndrome.
When the tutorial 5 minutes into the game explained how to reload a magazine I knew right there the game was going to be a huge disappointment.

Suikoden 1 to 2
Star Ocean to Star Ocean: Second Story
Dino Crisis to Dino Crisis 2 (for me anyway)
Resident Evil to Resident Evil 2
NieR to NieR: Automata

Resident Evil 3 to Resident Evil 4
Halo to Halo 2

Diablo 1 to Diablo 2
Far Cry to to Far Cry 3
Super Mario Kart to Mario Kart 64

Flashless at the Golden Globes
Uncharted 1 to Uncharted 2
AC1 to AC2
Motorstorm 1 to Motorstorm 2
RE3/Code Veronica to RE4

We just dont get those leaps anymore because devs are content with copy pasta sequels that take 5 years to make.

Gears of War 1 to Gears of War 2. The multiplayer was far better in 2 despite 1 being a sleeper hit and just thrown together. In my opinion Gears 2 was peak despite the bugs and glitches.
