Have to write a paper on mech anime...

Alright, so for my Modern Japanese Narratives class, our final paper has to be about animation. The professor (a fookin crazy wacky Japanese guy) strongly suggested I do mine about mech anime and Macross since I did a presenation on that earlier in the year. Ok, fine, that sounded good to me. Macross(robotech) is still one of my favorite animes. But I still need to do some research. First off, if someone knows some good resources on mech anime, that'd be nice, and secondly(and the main reason I made this thread :)), does anyone know what the first mech anime was? I think it might have been Giant Robo, but I have no idea.
Tanks (get it? :D)

well not really...yet
Hmm, I'm not 100% sure, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in any case it was the first biggest mech anime, that I'm sure of: Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor here in the US)

You should probably look up all the Go Nagai stuff from from the 70s, some of it like Grendizer was massively popular even in Europe during the late 70s and 80s, of course he also created stuff like Getter Robo and Mazinger. All of that is pretty much seminal.

The rest:

Heres a supposedly decent Macross site: http://macross.anime.net/

This site has plenty of writeups on Gundam and Macross: http://www.mahq.net/index.htm
