HAZE impressions & media thread

no. i'm not.

take away the cool looking armor and make it some power armor and i've played 3 similar looking games already this year and probably will again before the year is out.

Similar how? Are you talking about the settings? The ones that are modeled after settings you might find in real life? Or are you talking about the rebels? The ones designed to look like, you know, tinpot rebels, but with a touch of FRD cool?

I'm not talking about the gameplay or plot (which I know nothing about) but the vehicles, weapons, all the stuff in the screenshots

Have a fun! Enjoy!

He hardly knows what the Nectar is.

That's hardly very descriptive, is it? The vehicles look like stylized, futuristic interpretations of armed combat vehicles, and that applies to the weapons as well. Unless you are calling for combat vehicles that are shaped like unicorns and weapons that shoot silly string, your argument doesn't seem altogether solid. This "replace this with that and that with this and it would look like any other game" argument doesn't do much to change that either, considering that such an argument could be applied to just about any two games that share a genre.

Man oh man I'm excited about this game! It looks incredible!

My only concern is the AI. We haven't seen much of it. And from the jeuxfrance video, the game looks easy. Hopefully they REALLY, REALLY crank up the difficulty in 4 player co-op.

I'd be happy if the difficulty (single player, non-co-op) was about equal to Resistance on Superhuman. That was hard but oh so satisfying to beat. :D

Well it works on my PC. Graphics look pretty damn impressive. Not the best quality but the game looks solid. Cant hear shit, though :(

Already asked BlimBlim this concerning the Naruto movie, but why is there no sound whatsoever?
According to Snoopers there is no sound from the game in the video he recorded, only the developer talking.

Didn't Free Radical do ALOT of OG Xbox stuff? I got a feeling that this has the 360 as the lead design SKU, but is going to be RELEASED first on the PS3, to try and soak up some of those disappointed PS3 owners, that cant play Halo and need a NEW FPS, than after Halo dies down this comes out for the 360.
Bitter tears...... Timesplitters started on PS2. hahaha

Not entirely if OG is meant to stand for original, but Free Radical started on the PS2 with Timesplitters and everything after that was multi. I got a feeling you wrong.

yep. and I'd say they look generic as well. You jest with your unicorns and silly string but using the same setting in every shooter game is not a virtue to me

Jeez how many future war/jungle fps's have there been? I must be out of the loop right?

Right, so why don't you just came out and state "oh no another fps" and then, for your own benefit surely, steer clear of first person shooters? I guess I don't see the point of complaining about something being generic when it sounds like you'd view the overwhelming majority of first person shooters as generic.

Internet fame!

Serious-like, Haze looks great in motion. I'm excited to finally play one of the killer bees.

FPS? I love FPS games.

But I do say that Crysis is generic, because it's FarCry with aliens

Sorry for demanding more than the status quo.

I'm sure that HAZE will have a great story, AI, gameplay all that..these are just my first reactions from just the screenshots and it seems as though i've upset the love vibe GAF has going on here, sorry about that.

You get a better look at the bombing run aftermath now. I still love how the reality looks a lot darker, and now you can clearly see that there are bodies scattered about that only appear as the main character's armor malfunctions. Awesome.

Quite a bit of draw-in around the 1:35 mark though, but I'm assuming it's because it might be a masked loading section, and the game is still pretty far from release.

I remember this being talked about when it was demoed last year; things seeming different following the battle, with a previously idyllic landscape being blood-splattered and ruined.

As for the draw in, I'm not sure if you should expect that to be fixed. That may be a necessary trade-off for that thick vegetation.

You still don't make a whole lot of sense. You are basically demanding a unique and original approach to the design of everything from guns to environments (all environments, no less), in every game? Then again, you stating that Crysis is Far Cry with aliens kind of sets a goofy tone for your whole argument, so maybe it's not supposed to make sense.

Well, it's not a biggie since everything else is so detailed, but it's something that tends to ruin the illusion in some games. I guess with Haze I can blame it on the fact that what you see might not be real at all times. :D

The peoples riling on this game and then getting ready to play Shadowrun, Halo, Gears, GRAw etc need to take a reality check.

FPS games are almost always set in the future or with weird elements. Nothing wrong with that; secondly at least HAZE is doing something unique and looking very damn nice at the same time.

I can understand if you just don't like FPS's(like me) but no need to say the game is generic. That is way false.

also Its being made by Free Radical. It has way more chance of being good than Killzone or Shadow run.

I think I'm starting to feel the same vibe from futuristic post apocalyptic settings as the WWII setting...perhaps not nearly as overdone and played out yet...but I feel we're heading in that direction

You still don't make a whole lot of sense.

then we are at an impasse, good day to you, sir.

Well it does heavily remind me of Chrome: Specforce in appearance and execution (and Pariah as I said before, and so did a few people in attendance apparently), but that game was unmitigated shit and I expect Haze to at least have a decent campaign and an excellent multiplayer component.

It looks ok to me, nothing innovative or new. Also I can't believe even with the power of Cell and other next gen hardware the leaves and plants are still static...

I mean at least 4 or 5 years ago I played Red Faction on PS2 and in that game I was blowing up walls and floors left and right.

Kinda lame

edit:
the gunfights look pretty lame as well. Did these developers learn anything from FEAR? I see absolutely no environment interaction here at all. Inexcusable for this day and age

Perhaps to be added soon? eg. like Uncharted?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic:lol Please don't pull Uncharted into this! No I think the leaves will stay still for the most part; some areas may have moving foliage but nah...I really wish it did though.

I'm not a graphics whore anyway so it looks very good for me.

Yeah I agree with that sentiment I think the game looks great but it really stands out when the leaves just sit there. Hopefully they will change it by the time the game ships.

Not sure why I'm indulging this as a rational post, but... well it still has some time to go yet, and this is a playable beta, usually those have features removed or placeholdered in order to get playable. And if there's one thing to walk away from the Haze demo is that it looked to have no problems in the framerate department. It's funny, I was reading an article in EDGE a couple of months ago with the guys from Crytek talking about their interactive foliage:

"The clipping leaves - that's something we're still working on," admits a softly spoken Cevat Yerli. "We had a version of the leaves that was very expensive, but what I want to avoid is the user coming back and saying that this engine is too slow. Certain leaves - the bigger ones - do bend, but it's tough to get the whole scene doing it without the framerate dropping. But if players want it then [he clicks his fingers] they turn it on. Technology wise there's nothing that's holding us back - it's all about optimisation time. Maybe we'll optimise to the point where we have a releasable version then continue as we did with Far Cry for two and half years."

As a standard feature, it may be a little while off yet.

No I'm not being sarky lol. More interaction with the environment is being added to uncharted...like more jointed plants, and destructable etc.

Looking good to me. I'm liking the art, graphics, and what they're doing with the story, let's see if the gameplay holds up. Oh, and that HUD is awesome.

Just to put the issue to rest, David Doak clears up the whole "exclusivity" issue. I really wouldn't want this to be a lengthy debate, but it's the closest to an official statement we have right now so it needs to be posted. From Eurogamer:

Free Radical's David Doak has told Eurogamer that Haze is being developed for multiple formats after all - it's just leading on PlayStation 3.

"We're working on development on all platforms, so we will bring the other ones along," Doak told us at UbiDays in Paris yesterday. "It's just looking at the way to best get a return on the investment of making the game."

"I think there's an opportunity there to create a new brand and push new IP and PlayStation 3 looks like a good place to do that at the moment.

"There's obviously the performance - the machine's a very capable machine - and I think we're pretty well-placed to take advantage of it because we've got a good history on PlayStation 2 so we're not frightened by some of the things causing people a bit of alarm," the developer - a veteran of projects like GoldenEye - explained.

Publisher Ubisoft had previously been coy about confirming the game's multiformat status, with US reports pointing to a "hazy" future for Xbox 360 and PC versions yesterday.

Anyone else reminded of Far Cry Instincts? Where you had the 'power' to see enemies in the same shade of yellow, like you do in this game with Nectar energy. Just has the same general feel after watching gameplay.

I have yet to see anything 'unique' about this game, but keeping eyes open.

That nectar overboost feature seems interesting, like you can't make the difference between you friend and your foes, and you just fire overevery body like crazy. Must be a lot of fun on coop.

The other ability to see grenades and mines a second before the explode is nice too.
