I said this in a different thread and I'll say it here: Season 8 comes late October 2018. Spin off will come Fall 2019.
I'll take it a step further: We're gonna get a Roberts Rebellion standalone movie released in Theaters Before Season 8 premieres.
I'm gonna piggyback off this and say the spinoff will be Aegons conquest and it will be go by this name.

They're not doing Robert's Rebellion or Dunk and Egg, GRRM has confirmed those two aren't happening.
I'm glad they're saying these will be prequels 'cus I'd honestly hate the idea of something happening after GoT's time period.

GRRM time. I would guess the most likely scenario is that GoT ends in 2019 and we see one of these in 2020.

Game of Thrones is now why I think milking a series past its original expiration date is the way to go.
It lost quality after Season 4, but each year it still rises exponentially in popularity. And they want to end that? Just forget the original plan, no successor series will be more sell-able than the original flagship title. Do it. Game of Thrones Season 9, Season 10, Season 11. Do it!
I mean if you think about it, GoT Season 7 is self-contained. Everything before it is effective filler. The cast has always rotated, it can rotate again after the "Main Story" concludes.
(i.e. Once Upon a Time, although it remains to be seen if THEY can make that transition successful)

Yeah, there's no way one of the prequels comes out a year after GoT ends or we have GoT's 8th season and a prequel in one year.
How so? There's nothing in season 7 that I would call self contained.

It feels like with the spinoff, HBO is going to lean harder into high fantasy of seasons 5-7 than the politics of seasons 1-4. But I wish they were making a show that was going to be more structured around the best of what Varys, Littlefinger, Olenna, Margery, and Tywin offered.
Espionage, assassinations, backstabbing, plotting, scheming, and international politics of the world. Since the Iron Bank and Faceless Men are international organizations, they could be the anchor to allow the series to span all of the major continents of asoiaf.
Call the show "The Iron Bank", with a plot revolving around the group of mega wealthy investors that run the iron bank. According to the world of ice and fire lore book, the iron bank has a secret council with a chairman of sorts, with both men and women making up the members. This would allow for both strong male and female characters, something GoT excelled up. The show could then be about their different agendas.

Create a series specifically about what the 1% of planetos do to the world leaders that fuck them over.
They are pretty much the Illuminati of asoiaf, as the economy of most of the world powers depend on them, and they have magical face shifting assassins that they can employ to do their bidding, so the series can take place in every single region that matters, and feature people of color rulers and leaders from the areas of the world never featured in Game of Thrones.
Maybe even have some political infighting within the Iron Bank itself, perhaps a "who dunit?" murder mystery in the pilot, where the chairman of the Iron Bank is found brutally murdered in the rainy streets of Braavos. And to escalate the events, the Iron Bank itself was robbed successfully for the first time.
And what results is a "war of the five kings" sort of scenario, but it's not to sit the Iron Throne, it's to become the defacto leader of the Iron Bank, or the most powerful person in the world.

I don't think they can do that, how do you do Aegon's Landing when you can only have dragons every now and then?
Season 7 had the most callbacks to season 1 since probably season 2. It was in no way self-contained.

Yea I was legitimately surprised at how many references there were to Season 1.
Pretty unlikely, since the TV show made Dorne radioactive to its audience.
Well they may potentially do 2 shows. One can be that high fantasy stuff ( Aegon's conquest) the other one can be scaled back a bit and be more political.

They should be doing a follow up to Rome instead...
If you haven't already, you should read the Mistborn series. The first three books are in a vaguely Renaissance-y time period, and they're a complete trilogy, and now we're 3/4 of the way through a quadrology set in the same world about 300 years later in a more Wild West/industrial revolution-y period.

It's one of the more popular ideas that fans have been floating. Structurally and tonally, it would basically be ASOIAF Battlestar Galactica, but the Dorne aspect would probably give more than a few people pause.

I thought a glimpse of the future of Westeros was going to be the ending a few years ago with the Iron Throne displayed in a museum. I wouldn't want a series like that at all, but I wouldn't mind seeing a world where Westeros has finally progressed instead of being stuck in the middle ages for 8,000 years.
But yeah, a prequel series that is more about exploration of the unexplored part of the planet would be ideal.

I read some time ago they were developing a series based on I,Claudius. Haven't heard anything about it recently so I guess it's dead.

As long as it'll have a younger Olenna Tyrell in it I''ll be happy! Young Tywin would be nice too.

The post mentioned no current members of the current cast would be present in the prequels so I read that to mean that none of the current actors would star in the prequels. If they mean't no current characters would appear in the prequels I'd assume they would have said characters rather then members, I could be wrong of course but that's how it read to me.
Neither Tywin or Olenna are part of the current cast though so either the way it may not apply to them!

I can think of a few series that would be made:
-A prequel about the mad king and the stuff that happened before and during his reign.
-A prequel about what happened between mankind and nature for things to get so bad that the first whitewalker was created.
-A side story regarding all that happens in essos while all of the main cast is currently in westeros. They have to have their own stories of betrayal and intrigue. Plus it would be cool to see a cast based primarily around african, asian, and middle eastern descents.
There's 3 right there and those could all be good concepts. I can see why HBO can think of 5 easily.

I don't think they'll use the popular name of the Targaryen war of succession for Aegons conquest.
ASOIAF art is so cool.
I want them to expand the world. I want a show about the Jogos Nhai, Yi-Ti, the Throusand Islands, etc.
I'm not sure how they adapt the Dance of Dragons without breaking the bank.

Not true. He could be going off of anything in TWOIAF, which covers the whole history of Planetos in varying degrees of detail.

I agree that not doing Robert's Rebellion would be a massive missed opportunity. Despite all the drip feeding, a lot of people still don't quite have a grasp of the actual history leading up to the end of the Rebellion. It also helps that it's incredibly rich in content which means that there's potentially a stronger script available to adapt and further more, it's a heck of a lot different seeing than hearing as well. The best start would actually be Tywins rise to fame, War of the Ninepenny Kings leading to Roberts Rebellion.
Dance of the Dragons would be incredible adaptation as well particularly Battle Above the Gods Eye.
