HBO Max Adds Content Warning to Blazing Saddles

Jacqueline Stewart is a cinema and media studies professor at the University of Chicago and a host on TCM. She said in the introduction, "as the storyline implies the issue of race is front and center in Blazing Saddles. And racist language and attitudes pervade the film. But those attitudes are espoused by characters who are portrayed here as explicitly small-minded, ignorant bigots. The real, and much more enlightened perspective, is provided by the main characters played by Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder."

It was only a matter of time before the cancel mob came for Blazing Saddles. Next up is Tropic Thunder.

"movies are not real"

the funny thing is the same people demanding warnings like this are always crowing on about "media literacy" yet they demonstrate they have none and force their ignorance on the rest of us.

sad. feel like things are going backwards. SJWs are just making things more racist and don't even realize.

I am shocked that this movie isn't cancelled completely.

HBO seem a lot more lenient to be fair.

This movie does way worse than black face. Don't get me wrong I love the film but even I'm watching it and being like "ooof" at some parts haha.

Netflix should have done the disclaimers as well. Things like black face episodes of scrubs should never have been taken down.

I just don't understand who any of this is for, whether it's heavy handed or done tactfully.

More than ever we, as a culture, talk about pieces of art that "didn't age well" (for an ever-widening list of reasons) and critically examine the meta aspects of things that were never made to be deeply analyzed. That's what we do for fun in 2020. Go on YouTube and type in your favorite IP and you can watch a 60 minute video essay dissecting every tiny piece of it.

There's no need for training wheels when we're already riding the bike. I guess you could make a decent case for these messages before outdated kids movies because they don't have world experience yet, but that assumes they can even read.

So the obvious answer is, this is simply being done to appease the far left. As usual. So they can pat themselves on the back and think they've taken another step in making the world a utopia.

But here's the thing: isn't the world made better when people realize for themselves when something they see is outdated or racist or sexist? Shouldn't people learn to understand that themselves, so that they view not only the piece of content through that lens, but the outside world too?

I would rather a warning than removing it entirely. Still, it's like politicians and companies think we are too stupid to realize it's a old movie. However, I think this is more a move to save themselves from a PR disaster.
