This will never change and that's why it makes more sense to buy a TV from the previous year. The difference in price between a year old TV and a cutting edge one is usually pretty huge, whereas the picture quality almost never matches up to the price difference.

Very true, and likely what I'll do when I do upgrade.

unfortunately, nothing short of one of them breaking. I have a 4 year old 32" Panasonic LCD in the bedroom and 1.5 46" Samsung LCD.

I'm hoping the Panny breaks so that I can either buy a bigger for the bedroom or move the 46" there.

I shouldn't have bought the 46" inch one. It's too small, I'm thinking of getting a 55" or 60" next time.

A generational leap from my TH-50PZ700U in terms of image quality. I want CRT's 0 ms input lag. I play fighting game competitively.

I have a Kuro 60inch PRO151 professionally calibrated.

I'd like the following:

Perfect blacks
Perfect colors
Perfect gamma
No SDE
No ABL
No light bleeding/haloing
Great viewing angles
60+ inches

I'm not a fan of a certain "tech." I just want something that hits the mark.

I've got a series 3 Samsung LCD TV. 1080p 40" from around 2006. It's shit by today's standards, yet no new TV is so amazingly better that I'd consider swapping it out, unless it conked out, or unless of course, I required a larger screen (which I don't in the forseeable future).

Rather, my next display techs will move into HMDs. I'm definetly liking the way the HMZ-T1 is panning out, but will keep out an eye for revisions and competitors.

Ideally; head tracking, 1080p, 3D of the quality that the HMZ-T1 is purportedly providing (i.e. best, bar none) and better/more comfortable ergonomics.

I'd go so far as to purchase multiples of such a headset for multiple people viewing at once.

I don't believe my 46' Samsung LCD (60hz) is going to die anytime soon. Hope it doesn't as I don't want to drop another $1,800 on a bigger/better tv.

Something better than my professionally calibrated 5020FD Kuro or the death of my plasma.

(I'd probably do it for a 55" OLED if it could be had for $2500 or less..)

I've got a 42" Samsung DLP, that's got close to 8000 hours on the bulb. If the bulb dies soon, I'm sure I'll just replace it. I think it would take a really good deal to get me to buy a new one. A 1080p screen would be nice. Sony's new tech sounds interesting. The current market of edge-lit LED TVs don't really interest me. I'm hoping to get a couple more years out of mine, then see where the market is.

Would only swap it if it dies now, 27" Toshiba from er 2007 I think? Cost me £500 back in the day and was fancy for having two hdmi inputs haha

I would def go bigger and thinner if it did bite the dust but really it ouputs at 720 so good enough for me in the grand scheme of things.

I am still rocking a 40 inch Samsung LCD that I want to replace. But first we need to move which I think will be this summer.

A year ago I swapped out a 32" 720p Hanspree set for my 40" 1080p Toshiba.

The size increase is enough for my room and 1080p is obviously all I need for the time being. So... when 4KTVs start to become viable? Haha, I dunno, happy with my TV.

Yeah, eventually if they do perfect HMDs, I will probably just sell off my Kuro and get something smaller. The HMZ is pretty awesome for just movie and gaming in general, main reason why I got a 60" TV in the first place. If they can fix the issues with ergonomics, maybe adjustable FOV, and 1080P. I might just sell both projector and TV, and basically stick with displays that don't take alot of room.

My next set will probably be an OLED or CLED three to four years from now. It's cool Sony's television division is still pushing new tech so hopefully they are still around by the time I'm interested in whatever is new.

Right now I have a 50" Panasonic ST30 which I'm completely happy with.

If by some miracle someone made a 1080p, bigger then 42", with little to no input lag(talking crt levels) I would chuck my old tv out the window and buy a new one in a heart beat.

I currently have the Sony KDL-46EX500.

I'm pleased with it, but I'd gladly go back to a Panasonic plasma if they decide to release a non-glossy model. Unfortunately, I don't think this is gonna happen.

I loved my old Panasonic TH-42PV70E, but our new condo was just way too bright for it during daytime, so I was forced to get rid of it. The Sony LCD is alright, but SD material looked much, much better on my previous plasma.

Oh, and I will never ever pay more than 1.000 Euros again for a new TV. And as long as Sony and Panasonic produce television sets, I will never get one from another maker.

So I guess I won't be in the market for a new TV until there's a non-glossy OLED/CLED-TV by Sony or Panasonic, which measures at least 46" and costs below 1.000 bucks.

And I don't think that will happen for at least another 3-4 years.

I got a 50" panny Plamsa from 2009 but it has 3 awesome scratch marks all the way down the left of the tv you can see during the day and in really bright (fuck you cat, i love you, but fuck you). will get a 55" panasonic plasma in the future for my next tv.

I bought a 42 inch lcd LG 1080p about a year and 3 months ago for 500ish a great tv.

Only way I'm upgrading is when

Me and the gf BUY a house and the living room supports a bigger tv, even then not interested in 3d/apps at all.

When 4k resolution AND CONTENT is available in games/netflix.

What would it take to upgrade? Most likely my TV breaking or the screen developing some kind of serious issue.

I have a Samsung LCD (LNT 3753H) from 2007... 37", 720p. At the time, I paid a lot of money for it (almost $1,000). Image quality is still pretty damn good. There are some minor banding issues; they are hard to spot unlike some other LCD models from that time. Oddly enough, they have become even less noticable over the past couple years. Unless you are intentionally not paying attention to what you are watching or playing, you might spot the banding in certain types of scenes/settings.

It's not 1080p, but HD content still looks great on it. I really have no compelling reason to get a new TV. I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p but it's not important enough to make me want to buy another TV. 3D is a fad at best. Stuff like Netflix/Hulu/etc. I can get with my PS3 or a Roku box; it is not necessary to have it built into the TV. So while all of these improvements are nice, they aren't so nice that it would justify me dropping another $600+ for a decent LED/Plasma screen. Maybe in another couple years.

i have an old vizio 42 inch lcd 1080p . I would upgrade to a led lcd monitor at 42 inches if i could get it for $200-$300 and it was high enough quality. If not im going to hold out for a 3d tv with no glasses . 4k res i guess. MY gf and i are looking to buy a place so maybe i will get something skinny next year to hang on the wall because tis vizio is pretty thick . Put te vizio in the bedroom and put something new and cheap on the wall . The vizio was $600 bucks back in 2007 or 8 when i bougt it

I think that is one of the industrys problems. Why am I going to buy a tv now wen they are showing off 4k tvs .

When I move out I'll buy a 52" inch considering how cheap they are now. But the only upgrade I want to do after that is eventually get a room with a 100+" projector screen.

I have to support the OP's conclusion, based on recent experience. I had a 40" 720p LCD for the past 5 years; when I moved to a house with a bigger living room, the viewing distance was larger than optimal, and made playing console games somewhat uncomfortable (which is a big reason why I've moved away from console games over time).

A couple weeks ago I was able to buy a 55" plasma at a price 30% lower than what I paid for the LCD. It's better in almost every way than the LCD, but that's inevitable in electronics--given enough time, things always (or are expected to always) get better and cheaper. It ultimately was the size issue that drove it for me.

However technology progresses, if I have to remake that purchase every 5 years, I'll be OK with it.

I have a 51" 3DTV Samsung and won't upgrade until it or any of my other TVs blow up. Only the Samsung does 1080p, but doesn't really matter to me. They all look good enough for me.

That is the problem manufacturers are having. What more can they do to make the public buy a new TV? I mean, HDTV is still something new to many, so 3D or even higher resolution doesn't matter to most.

I won't get a new HDTV until we move to a bigger house or the Samsung 40 inch LCD I have in the living room breaks. I don't want a TV in our bedroom, and I'm happy with our 10 year old 27 inch CRT in the den for playing PS2, Xbox, GC and Wii games.

Been perfectly happy with my 720p LG 42" screen for the last couple of years, and I don't see myself wanting/needing an upgrade anytime soon. If it broke (which it eventually will, especially now that I'm writing about it!) I'd probably upgrade to a slightly larger one, but I have zero interest in doing so at the moment.

well, I have a 720p 50" samsung plasma that has lots of image retention problems and weird white balance flickering issues when hooked up to a cable box.

I've held of on upgrading for a couple years as the image still works great for games and the black levels are "good enough" for movies.

Since those amazing OLED panels won't get down to my price range (3K max) for a long ass time, I think I may just upgrade to a better, TOTL (or close to it) 50" 1080p plasma set that is less susceptible to IR in the next two years if I can get one for under $1500. that should keep me happy till the OLED stuff gets more affordable and I can get another jump in PQ (and screen weight/ power consumption).

Right now I'm fine with my set, a 40" LCD Sony Bravia KDL40-S5100. Bought it in August of 09 I believe. For where I'm staying now and my room size it's fine. I'm pretty happy with the picture quality and performance but if a newer set came along at the same size but with better black levels and almost zero input lag then I'd be interested.

Assuming the price would be good for me. OLED and Sony's new CLED tech sounds good but will be pricey as hell for the first couple of models. Once they get the tech down and prices start coming down I would consider trading up for one of those. I'd also take 3D in the set which will probably be a feature on most tv's by then.

Doubt I'll buy a new TV until my current HDTV breaks (I bought it back in '08 I think). 3D tech holds absolutely zero interest for me, and Smart TV features sound like useless crap that I'll never use - simply included to plaster in a bullet list on the side of the box . I don't need a bigger TV and mine is already 1080p... I'm sure there are nice improvements in screens like OLED to get a marginally better picture right now, but not enough to make me drop 1k+ on something that isn't leaps and bounds better.

My 42" 1080p LCD Philips TV that I bought in 2007 when my ex girlfriend got me the same PS3 that I still have today is good enough for me for the foreseeable future.

Only way I would upgrade anytime soon is if it breaks, and I hope that won't happen for awhile.
