YOU DON'T NEED A TELESCOPE FOR THIS!

Heh, I've gotten that question all day telling people about this. Hell, you hardly even have to go OUTSIDE. Just look out your window!

Here's sort of what to expect. The eclipse will last from 7:34pm EST to 1:17am EST. The totality (the good shit) starts around 10:00pm EST and ends around 10:51pm EST. The moon will first be shadowed by the earth (this is different than the phases of the moon ... if you want an explanation of that, just ask), and then will become red as the earth eclipses the moon completely. The red colouring happens because the sunlight reaching the moon is scattered in the earth's atmosphere. Smaller particles scatter the shorter wavelengths (green, blue, violet) and the only thing that's left are the longer wavelengths (red, orange, yellow).

Here's a time lapse of the eclipse from August 2007:

It was snowing really heavily today so I wasn't counting on seeing the moon tonight. But right now it's fairly clear and I have a front row view of the moon from my apartment! Hope the conditions hold up.

I'll be up to take some photos of it. Clear night here so far *touch wood*. Couple of hours to go!

Yeah, you only need one for a solar eclipse.

Enjoy your hours of entertainment guys.

The Lunar Eclipse that we copped last year lasted for roughly 3-4 hours.

Time to go setup my scope in the freezing cold. Saturn and Mars are out, so I figure I'll take advantage of the clear night.

Looking into the sun is always dangerous...eclipse or no eclipse.
Yes, although one could argue that it's more dangerous during an eclipse, because people incorrectly think that since it's dark, it can't hurt you.

Freakin' clouds. :-(

it's raining here :(

and some monster downpour but some bitch drizzle that the clouds are thick enough to cover the sky

smh

I've got a perfect view right now. Debating whether to go outside and take some pics or just enjoy it from the comfort of inside via my window.

ManaByte, what kind of camera/lens are you using? I left my Digital Rebel at home so I'm trying to take photos with a cheap Powershot and failing :(

Powershot here as well. Does your moon come out super bright and perfectly round?
