Hellblade 2 runs at 30 fps with dynamic resolution on both Xbox Series S and Series X according to GamePro (there are no graphics modes)

Isn't this one of those things you could see coming from miles away? Afaik it's only been showcased with black bars and at 30fps

The game is gonna need to look way, WAY better than anything on the market to warrant 30 fps.

It is not open world, it really seems very stricted and scripted (even more than aw2), i don't see stuff that should bring a cpu on its knees (hundreds of characters on screen, advanced ia or destruction etc.), so it must be a gpu thing.

And the fact is, it really doesn’t. They could have made a downgraded 60fps mode

No performance mode option is bullshit and unacceptable, just like Starfield.

Xbox is really the shits right now.

I believe any and everything published by Sony will come with a 60fps mode. What ifs can be cool and all, but the simple fact is that this gen, every single game published by sony, has had both a 30 and 60fps mode. And I even suspect the Marvel's Unreal game could also have a 60fps mode too. I mean Alan wake 2 had one...

I don't get why Sony is being brought into this though, there is more reason to think they would put out games with 60fp modes (regardless of how you may want to dismiss them) than anyone else. I mean, we can afford them that at least, when they release their first PS5 game without a 60fps mode, then we can add them to these kinda conversations.

I do feel a conversation needs to be had about MS Studios though. This is not the first time they have put out a game that only had a 30fps mode, unless Redfall also falls into your "technical showcase" description. And as I said earlier, DF showed that using that replica XS CPU paired with a 6700 GPU, the XS could run starfield at 60fps when the rez was dropped. Albeit not consistently, but that is just an indication that with more time spent on optimizing the engine, they could have got a 60fps mode in there. They took the easy way out instead and just capped the framerate to 30fps across the board and called it an artistic choice.

And this cinematic showcase thing is really just a lot of hot air. Unless a game is CPU-limited off the jump, you can increase its framerates by simply tweaking the rez and IQ assets. Thats because in majority of the cases, most of those games a GPU bound. Unless you feel that a walking simulator where you navigate through tight spaces, small slices of maps...etc is just as equally taxing on a CPU as an open-world game with hundreds-thousands of NPCs/objects on screen at any given time.

Seems like Microsoft releasing day and date on XSX, XSS, AND PCs is just too much for them to chew at one time.

This is why Sony’s console first approach is so much better, the devs only have to optimize for a single platform in order to get the game out on a reasonable date

the experience should feel more "cinematic" - similar to movies that run at 24 frames per second.

also:

the framerate can be increased on PC

What’s so unclear? You wanna watch movies? Go with Xbox. You wanna play games, go with PC.

To claim 30fps cap on Xbox consoles is an artistic choice, but allow the game to run higher on PC is an unbelievable cop out. And I mean literally unbelievable. I would bet everything this game is GPU and/or memory bound and the only reason SX doesn't have a 60fps mode is because of Microsoft mandate. If this was a 3rd party developer, we'd be seeing a 60fps mode on Series X.

PCs are not some wells of infinite power, like Dragons dogma 2 shows.
PC still smashes console so long as the proper hardware is used.

In general, Series X has been a major disappointment. All this talk of 12TF for 30fps FP games is brutal. Seems I made the right call with selling my Series X.

At least with Sony, they offer a plethora of visual options and treat their base properly instead of shoving “cinematic choices” down their throats.

Of course, it's a cop-out. Resolution probably has to be dropped to 720p for 60 and the game already has terrible image quality as is. The post-processing probably completely falls apart and breaks up at low resolutions with upscaling and becomes so ugly that they decided against.

Curious how it runs on SS. Surely, if it can run at 30fps there, then the XSX should be a mode that looks similar at 60fps.

I'm having a hard time understanding how every first party Xbox developer has to make a version of their game that runs on Xbox Series S, but somehow cannot make a version of that same game that runs at 60fps on Xbox Series X. Folks are going to point to the CPU probably, but wasn't some snarky jokes made about XSS having a faster CPU than PS5. And so far I'm not seeing PS5 first party games having this problem.

Hellblade doesn't seem like a game where your gonna have alot of things happening alot at once to tax the CPU.

Maybe more of a GPU limitation.

Outdated platform altogether..

These long console cycles lead to exactly this.

We’re in the era of diminishing returns bois. I’m playing the PS4 Pro version of Elden Ring right now on PS5 and in some areas it looks better than Hellblade II a game on a GPU 3x the compute and even then it has to run a much lower resolution and at half the framerate of ER. Crazy.

I am looking forward to Hellblade II it’s one of my most anticipated games. I hope it delivers!

JFC, another second-class citizen experience for console owners. Microsoft must really hate their Xbox fanbase 🤣

Just keeps getting worst and worst o.0

That's the craziest part: MS aren't even forcing some of these studios to give the console owners options for performance. Series X is suffering because of Series S limitations, point blank.

Are the black bars on this like The Order: 1886 & Death Stranding, so 21:9 displayed within 16:9? or just pre patched Evil Within that did the same but didn't expand the aspect ratio and kept it 16:9?

As someone that used to run a 3840x1600 custom res to get ultrawide on my TV for some games, I don't mind black bars if we actually get the expanded aspect ratio its supposed to deliver.

Death Stranding has black bars?

Sucks for a game reliant on the visual presentation that this is capped at 30 FPS. Excuse will be this was done to keep the Series S/X games similiar when people are buying a Series X for both the physical discs usage and more so, the performance.

Not complaining since i am playing this game free via game pass but still expected this to be nailed.

This must be some of the most spectacular backfiring I've seen on consoles. All this gloating pre-release about 12 TFLOPs and the PS5 being an overclocked 9 TFLOPs GPU. The SX was supposed to smash it to pieces. We even had the Microsoft execs exchanging emails on how glad they were at the PS5's specs reveal because they had the more powerful machine.

Fast forward 3 and a half years later, what is the result? Constant excuses as to why the SX is underperforming. From the hilarious tools narrative to Sony moneyhats developers to sabotage Xbox ports. What is beyond comical is that every time a game has a substantial advantage on Xbox such as with A Plague Tale Requiem, we got a bunch of fanboys claiming the tools have finally arrived and that moving forward, this will be a common occurrence. Then the next AAA game comes out and nope, Xbox doesn't outperform the PS5 at all, and often times, it's even the opposite.

This is to say nothing of games such as Starfield that use an engine from the stone age, features ton of loading screens, and AI from the days of Skyrim that cannot run at 60fps, apparently due to CPU demands, yet you got Spider-Man 2 that not only looks much better, features almost no loading screens, and adds ray tracing and still manages to hit 60fps.

Now the latest one is Hellblade 2. The rendering is no doubt very advanced but this game is almost entirely GPU-limited. Why can't they find a way to run it at 60 on the most powerful console ever lol? At this point, I'll assume Phil is on Sony's payroll and has been inserted to destroy the Xbox brand from within. Never have I seen such as good ambassador for PC or Playstation.

The game being "free" on Game Pass shouldn't be a reason to not complain, IMHO.

As over the years graphical improvements got less and less noticeable, I began gravitating towards higher frame rates. For me it is the biggest upgrade this generation, even bigger than 4K. 30 FPS should be left for cinematics and scripted scenes. Or at the very least be optional as it is with most of the games. Those arguments about 30 FPS being more cinematic are laughable.

I agree, it's still a letdown. Thank goodness it doesn't come at any cost to me but you're right, you're paying for the subscription if you wanted just this game alone.

I would be pissed if it was $50 and still got this vs playing this on game pass.
