Helldivers 2 CEO reveals 500,490 players after Xbox release

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Mod Edit: Title changed. There is no indication that any record was broken.

Helldivers 2 is seeing a huge resurgence, hitting a major player count milestone just days after it arrived on the Xbox.

It's been well over a year since Helldivers 2 released. When it did, it took the industry by storm with its chaotic combat, democratic danger, and, of course, plenty of pesky bugs and robots to destroy, if you don't accidentally destroy yourself or a teammate first. During that year, there was one highly demanded change players called for – its arrival on Xbox.

Well, now it's finally here, bringing it to all major platforms (apart from the Switch 2, sorry). However, once you combine that with the new free Halo DLC, we have a brand new player count record, with Helldivers reaching the highest number of players it's ever had.

Helldivers 2 smashes player count record after releasing to Xbox

As shared by the CEO of Arrowhead, the developers of Helldivers 2, it was revealed that the total player count for the game hit 500,490 players.

Helldivers 2 player count

For context, the peak player count for Helldivers 2 on PC has never hit more than 458,000, and that was back in February 2024 when it released.

Since then, in the last 30 days, the average player count on PC, according to Steam Charts, was 33,956, meaning this is a huge increase from the game's standard turnout.

Of course, the game's out on PlayStation too, so it's likely the player count has been higher than 33,000 in recent months, but to hit a record of over half a million players over a year into the game is wildly impressive.

As mentioned, this is mainly due to the fact that it's now available on Xbox, but it's also partly due to the recent Warbond, a battle pass that offers players all sorts of Halo-themed weapons, armor, and gear. Both combined are proving to be extremely popular among players and could mark a major resurgence for the popular chaotic adventure.

Wow, that's actually crazy.

Playstation's multiplatform console strategy is starting off with a bang.

The Xbox paid app charts aren't updated in real time so it doesn't show there yet, but I imagine it's gonna hang around the top 5, 10 for a little while.

The article title does not match what the CEO is saying. Record high was during launch given that back in Feb 2024 the game had 450K+ on PC alone without counting any PlayStation players which are guaranteed to be over 50K.

So while I'm sure there is a good amount of players on Xbox giving this game a boost this is again very misleading.

Always glad to have more divers to defend democracy. The game's in a good state right now too (aside from a few frustrating bugs like being unable to clear POIs in cities or some secondary objectives not updating properly... also in cities).

It's going to sell gangbusters imo.

They should put it on Switch 2 as well.
Called it. The pricing is reasonable, the game is great and it has excellent product-audience fit for the normie Xbox audience.

The knock-on effect of driving up PS and Steam audiences again cannot be overstated either. Those CCUs are either new sales or returning players potentially spending new money on microtransactions.

Erratum: I dont want to comment anymore, about sales number and this Sony's decision on exclusives. But my opinion is full exclusives in each consoles has to remain inorder to maintain competitive mindset in terms of quality, creativity ,innovation technological advancement, and technical achievement, in which in turn will be better for all consumers because it gives us more choices with excellent quality and the industry will not be stagnant and complacent.

Not a proof of xbox sales. . Anyway, this is a very wrong decision of Sony porting its exclusives ported to other console and even to pc. PS console is becoming pointless. This is why PS console getting beaten badly by Switch.
Switch 2 is still in its hardcore early adopter phase and they're not supply limited.

Every MP game should be cross platform/cross play/cross save/crossdressing/cross progression

Edit: Cross buy

More players is always good. Arrowhead has been delivering consistent content and updates to the game, that I feel compelled to buy some super credits to get additional warbonds. Hope the game continues to grow.

I'm just surprised there were people assuming this would flop on the Xbox platform.

Yeah, it's a late port to a smaller userbase...but it's in a genre that platform's base eat up regularly.

I'm sure theres some xbox players but I'd say it more thanks to the Halo crossover boosting returning numbers.

Also the numbers in the OP make no sense, there was 450k on steam alone on release.

Yep, these 500K are a very high number, but not the record. When it achieved 450K in PC had somewhat similar number in PS, meaning the record must be around aprox. 800K-1M.

Xbox showing their grandpa Sony how online games work.
Online games are more successful in PS than in Xbox

It didn't start with Helldivers 2, they had stuff before in other consoles like MLB, Destiny 2 etc.
MLB was forced to go multiplatform by the league lest they lose the license. Destiny was already multiplatform when Sony bought Bungie. I'd like to know about your etc.

The helldivers community is one of the best communities out there. Thus far the experience with PC and PS5 divers is an amazing one. I'm addicted.

Not only that, I believe the 500K CCU is the ingame CCU count, as we already have the 300K ingame CCU in that other thread.

This would include PC and PS5.

The need to sell games in an increasingly crowded hobby is by far a bigger driver for innovation than exclusivity.
