Hellraiser (2022)

I recommend the newer Nightbreed in that case. Saw the uncovered footage in a cinema here, was janky VHS, Really bad. Producer did the screening, spoke before and after.

Got a proper look after he talked about (Barker) the original cut being locked in the vaults for decades.

Different film. If you've read the book, it's 101 perfect. Newer version is the real deal, studio even released it after the shitty VHS took traction.

Dude who brought it to light found it in a box in his house. According to him, company jumped on the money.

Cabal was great, I read it after watching Nightbreed and thought, "Man they butchered that amazing book." I'll definitely check out the director's cut, didn't even know it existed.

Holy crap, looked at the wiki page for Nightbreed and I never realized the shrink was played by motherfuckin David "The Fly" Cronenberg! Danny Elfman scored the movie too!

I like her design tbh, the male pinhead always looked goofy more than horrifying.

This movie is why I avoided the Rubik’s Cube growing up….You never know!

I’ve never seen any of these movies. Still worth it today? It’s supposed to be horror and I understand that the first movies are really old, but are they actually scary or just weird because of Pinhead?
More dark fantasy than scary.

It presented Lovecraftian themes in a visually interesting way. but the story doesn't really go anywhere. just visual displays of torture.

Eh, never was a big of Ol' Pinhead. Like 1 and 2. The rest are rather hazy for me to remember. I just watch the porn version instead.

Just to pre-empt any antiwoke warriors from the Sandman thread, who just have to come into this one to get their panties in a bunch about this too, this is how Barker describes Pinhead in the novella:

“Its voice was light and breathy-the voice of an excited girl. Every inch of its head had been tattooed with an intricate grid, and at every intersection of horizontal and vertical axes a jeweled pin driven through to the bone."

Jury’s out on this. Barker’s involvement is encouraging, but he’s not the creative force he once was.

Also, side note, I used to attend a lot of horror conventions in my younger years, and Doug Bradley was always unfailingly courteous and kind to everyone.

Clive Barker is a wee bit of a prick, to be honest.
I too met Doug Bradley a few years back and he really came off as a bit stand off-ish.
I asked him what he thought of the new hell raiser (more trying to get his opinion on introducing Angles, new pin head etc etc).
All he replied was "it's a bag of shit". I laughed and he just scowled at me.
Really bizarre moment. I don't get generally don't get awkward but that was a very awkward moment.
Maybe I got him on an off day.

I really hope they go into what the cube actually does from book lore. The films always left out the plus side to it and sort of steered you into believing you were just compelled or something.
Also gore.
Need lots of gore and lovecraftian mind fucks.

Yeah, quite possibly :messenger_tears_of_joy: He's kind of famous for absolutely despising the two movies he's not in, so that might have not helped your case!

Unfortunately, I very much doubt you're going to get your wish when it comes to the new movie. In this day and age, I can see it being a very safe, neutered version of what the story once was. Easy for the modern audience to digest, with none of the uncomfortable stuff. It'll probably be gory, but I very much doubt it'll delve into the heightened sexuality, depravity, sexual violence or other weird nastiness of the original two movies.

oh really!?
Whoops
Who is he to fling shit though. Some of those later films he was in........fuuuuuck they dropped the ball.
I'm like most. First two film...ace. Then it's just a dramatic downward slope.

Sadly your probably right. I miss the 80's.
I mean lets break some things down here.
A guy pushes a kid out the window of a tower that results in him being crippled whilst he fucks his sister. -Becomes the most watched show.
A guy racing to get through a weird anomaly portal , suddenly holted and is torn to pieces. -Arguably the best sci-fi in many years.

Can we not just have a guy having the best wank of his life?

Well, unless it was an A24 film.

Whoever came up with the one scene in Midsommar was all:

Sadly, I don't think any project coming out of Hulu's backside is going to come anywhere near close to the kind of creativity that A24 is known for.

But now I want an A24 Eggers directed Hellraiser movie.

He dies in the book. In hell. Killed by Jesus.

Makes no sense. Use another cenobite.

This new one, well ... has to be be new.

Leviathan though has never been explained. He was the God of that hell. There were many.

Edit. He was never called Pin-Head. Only in the films. He was a "hell - priest".

In my head, nothing past Hellbound is canon :messenger_tears_of_joy:

And a story that better fleshes out the lore of this version of hell would be excellent.

For anyone curious a comic sequel exists to Nightbreed.

It was bargain bin shit, didn't sell.

It was the protags searching for a new Midian. Got canceled. Never had a real ending. Well kind of but it was a shambles.

Just the mains looking at a moon. And 'we found our home'. The end.

No, I have been. But please do get triggered on other’s behalves and defend their virtue signaling/crying.
It's like if you said that you thought a poster was making more posts complaining about console warriors than there are people making console warrior posts.
It's just blatantly untrue.

No, that isn’t the same thing at all. There actively *are* more console warriors. There are more people bitching about anti-woke than there actually are anti-woke folks here. Hell there wasn’t even a response of “anti-woke” in the thread before his bitching/moaning.

There’s more posts from the woke crowd in this thread than the anti-woke crowd.

With regards to hellraiser itself, I always found the concept a bit disgusting and fascinating at the same time. But I didn’t like the first movie.

Kinda the point. You weren't meant to like it. Was a female Cenobite from the start. Was in the books and films.

There wasn't a female pinhead though. Only he was. Others were other demons. Which makes this stupid. His torture was getting the pins in his head.

Of course there are. They have to find reasons to dismiss any criticism and feed their slacktivist egos. They want attention and that is the only way they know how to get it.

I recently rewatched the first movie and found it… enjoyable but definitely hit/miss at times. It is a gore porn movie and revels in it. I do like how simple and threatening the Cenobites are. You don’t see much of them until near the last half of the film and even then its more about Frank than them. I feel the later films focused too much on the Cenobites to the detriment of the narratives in each subsequent sequel.

People forgot this;

Was due to competitive laws. Saved them from dying though. Funny how the Apple people never mention this.

No offense to Apple users, I used ones since childhood but fact is fact. First PC I ever used was a Mac, and then 2e's (if I remember correctly) in school.

History goes back further than your iMac pro. Microsoft bailed them out of bankruptcy, as they needed a competitor for legal reasons. Microsoft saved the company.

This is factual.

I would love a Hellraiser reboot with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates stylized as Cenobites

So I recently watched the two original Hellraiser films, and what surprised me the most about them is not the cool gore or horror, but the fact that there are well fleshed out characters and villains with clear motivations. It's not just a slasher flick with a bunch of teens who find the puzzle box and get killed off one by one.

I really hope that's not what the new Hulu film is going to be....

The franchise always had a cool mythology around it. I've been reading the comics. I highly recommend those

I think the fourth film is technically the final entry, with all other films thereafter being prequels. "Bloodline" is set in space, far into the future.

Even some of the direct to video ones were good. "Inferno" was like being in Silent Hill. It starred this actor who was in this other Clive Barker movie, and he resembles David Boreanaz.

Craig somebody...
