Help an Anime noob...

I just bought Now and Then, Here and There sealed for $25. It wasn't the most suggested anime in this topic, but it certainly was the cheapest, which is what made me pick it. Berserk and Champloo are expensive, which I believe have been the most reccomended in here :(

You can get the entire 25 episode series of Berserk for about $50.

As for Champloo, the entire series isn't available yet on DVD, so it's still pricey with no word of a budget box set likely for a long time.

Are we talking a real box set, or HK ripoff? It's hard to tell, often...

Real box set. The cheaper 6-disc single-case version, not the big ass Box of War (which goes for about $100+).

Cheaper version:

It seems like every place online is overpricing it ($70-80), but you can find it at, say, Best Buy for around $50 or so.

I'll throw in a few of my own recommendations into the pot:

Bubblegum Crisis (the original series), great show from the late 80's with animation and action towards the end of the series well ahead of it's time.

Outlaw Star, 26 episode series full of just plain fun action and comedy.

Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex, first season is finished on DVD. It is a must get. Fantastic story and animation for all 26 episodes. Next month the first volume of the second season will be released called SAC 2nd Gig.

Wings Of Honneamise, if you like your anime to be simply stunning in quality in all areas of production, check it out.

Samurai Champloo, created by Sinichiro Watanabe who directed Cowboy Bebop and it's movie. Kicks too much ass. Up to Volume 4(out of 7) right now.

Aim For The Top! Gunbuster, directed by Hideaki Anno (creator of Evangelion) starts off like your average girl pilots big robot fan service series and ends with a surprisingly epic and emotional finale(well it sure caught ME off guard). Definitely one to see. Not out on DVD but you may be able to find it on VHS.

Macross Plus, co-directed by Sinichiro Watanabe, it will simply own your ass. Must have.

And that is just a small sampling of the great anime out there.

Now and Then, Here and There is a very good series, but it's also pretty rough on the emotions.. I'm not so sure I would want to watch it more than once... In any case, I hope you enjoy it.

Berserk is only 54$ at DeepDiscountDvd if you want to give that a shot. Hardly expensive by anime standards. http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=MBI060097

On another note, if you just want to try a bunch of series, I would recommend just subscribing to netflix for a month. They have a pretty nice selection of anime and you can rent out the first volumes of a few series to see what you like.

I bought my single-case edition for $42 canadian, at a comic shop, so I'd assume you can get it cheaper in the US at a discount shop.

Oh yeah, Berserk comes highly recommended.

Ok, sorry to bump this topic, but I bought and finished Now and Then, Here and There the other day, and I have some feedback.

I didn't think it was bad, but I wasn't particularly impressed either. I wouldn't really suggest it to someone else or urge others to check it out, like I have Cowboy Bebop.

I'm almost loathe to type this, because I don't feel like its "me" per se, but one of the biggest reasons I didn't like it was just because there wasn't enough action. I said I was loathe to say that because I don't want you getting the wrong idea... I don't want fucking mindless anime that is just fighting robots and ever-escalating hand-to-hand battles. I really enjoyed that Now and Then brought up some questions that are genuinely difficult to answer, and that the motivation for most of the characters had genuinely complexity. It's just that beyond that, I felt like individual episodes lacked much to sink my teeth into. In about half of them the credits would role and I'd say "...that's it? Nothing happened!"

So yeah... given that, does someone have any new suggestions (or want to single out something previously suggested), that might feature a little more impressive action sequences, while not really insulting the intelligence of the viewer? I thought Bebop struck the right balance, in that regard. Again, I can't stress this enough, it DOESN'T just need to be all fights and explosions... I'd like what I see next to have some meat to it, while just being a little more "fun" than Now and Then was... it was pretty freakin heavy.

I've also been thinking about One Piece, b/c I've been really digging the newfound "pirate" pop-cultute renaisaissance... I eat that shit up. Does it have any official releases?

Don't get me started. I get in trouble every time. -_-;

Stand Alone Complex.
Berserk.

Oh hell, just look at my list and evaluate as appropriate.

It's still in a "maybe" stage. So the only way to get in on the official boat and understand what's happening is the (slow release) manga. But however you want to get it, legit or sub, it's damn awesome.

I've never watched anything subtitled, because all the voice acting that those REALLY into anime bitch about as being horrible and butchering everything etc. have never bothered me at all.

I'm not averse to subtitles... loves kung fu hustle, etc., but given a choice I choose to listen to english audio :) So is there any one piece fandubs? or is it all fansubs?

It's highly unlikely there are any fandubs for One Piece... There's a lot of work that goes into dubbing, and fans don't have access to the original music and effects tracks (Not to mention professional recording studios..).

Again, I'll push Stand Alone Complex, which is basically a futuristic cop show. It has some good action sequences, and while some episodes are better than others, the story is pretty entertaining and thoughtful. It is mostly a serious show (with a few funny moments), but it's far lighter than Now and Then, Here and There. I think it gets a little "talky" at times though. I hear the second season "2nd GIG" is even better (Haven't seen it yet, waiting for the DVD release this month..).

And for the love of all that is holy, do not watch the One Piece English dub that's put out by fox. It can hardly even be called the same show.

I'm no big Anime freak, but i can't get enough of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone complex.
I'd also pimp Wings of Honneamise.

edit: Link removed, too much bad mojo with the site

Really. The dub is horrible, they've skipped like 40 of the first 75 episodes, it's completely butchered the charm of OP.

I'm DLing a OP torrent of the first few episodes... fansubs. Hope it was a good group doing the subbing, b/c there were several to choose from.
