Help me! GBA SP or PSone w/LCD screen?

I'm really, really stuck between buying one the these two -

GBA SP I want becuase it's extemely portable and has loads of cool RPGs that I want to get round to playing someday, on the other hand, a PSone with screen will look a helluva lot better and I already have loads of games that I still wanna play.

I know that the PSone needs to have a constant power source so it gonna restrict me much more and its less convinent to setup, but I really need something to entertain me when I'm away from home - any suggestions? I can't pick between the two!

PSX has those too

If you're concerned about portability, then go with the SP.

If you feel you'll have good time to play the PSX, go with that.

PSX > SP in the RPG department, by far.

I say PSX.

Is money a concern? At this point I'd say the decision is DS or PSP. All your GBA games are good for the DS, and suddenly in a few months here the game lineup is going to be great. It really doesn't sound like the Micro is what you're looking for, so whomever suggested that is silly.

I had already eliminated those two on the basis of -

DS - too big, not a single game that interests me, games are gonna cost me a fortune
PSP - not out here (europe) yet, no games that interest me, too expensive, games will also cost me a fortune

Money is not an issue for PSX or GBA games at all as I can get most games for a few pounds/dollars (I work in a game store, staff discount is great)

I woke up and the first thing I saw was this thread, I though the last 3 years was a dream or something.

Unless money is a problem you should go for a DS as it covers you GBA problem and a little bit more along with it.

From your list I would pick a SP.

I gotta ask though, what are you playing right now if you this far behind the current gaming trend? (no offence ment).

None taken, I have my Xbox, PS2, GC and PC all at home, but I'm in a situation now where I am away from home more often than I used to be so I need something more portable. I dont wanna get a DS or PSP for the reasons I stated above.

I would take an apple instead of the banana, thank you.

More seriuosly, why don't a GC with GB Reader and screen? I have no idea about how it runs, but if you are not looking for playing on the go, maybe that would be a good option.

I think there is as well mini screens for PS2, taht would be even better if work well (that I don´t know).

DS is too big and PSX with an LCD screen isn't? As for the games, it plays GBA games now, and as the DS library fills out and comes down in price (and preowned stock starts to hit) you'll be able to pick them up. Unless money's really tight, it's by far the best option if you go the Nintendo route. It would be a complete no-brainer for me, but it sounds like I've got more of a requirement for genuine portable gaming than you. :)

You probably have, it doesnt NEED to be portable as in I want to play it on the train or something, but it needs to be small enough to carry around in a rucksack - thats why I dont really wanna get a PS2 or GC with a screen, as they are too big. At this point, I'm leaning towards the PSone and screen.

If you have a slim PS2, just get a screen for it instead. You'll be able to play both PSX and PS2 games, as well as DVDs from one power source if you get the Pelican screen. Screen isn't the best, but it works pretty well.

The GBA-SP will be around for quite some time. The PSOne w/ LCD, on the other hand, will not due to it not being manufactured anymore (IIRC). Once the supply dries up, that is all.

Could you define "away from home?"

In my mind, the choice is a no-brainer -- you should get the GBA SP. If there is a game you really think you're missing on the PSX, then you can play it when you're home with the PS2. On the other hand, buying a GBA gets you access to a lot of outstanding games, and is portable in cases where you're AWAY from a power outlet...not just away from your home in a hotel or something.

So DS is too big but PSX is not? You don't need to buy DS games, just get the GBA games. Later on if you see a DS game you like you can buy it.

I can't believe people are recommending a GBASP over a FUCKING PLAYSTATION! :lol

Are you kidding me? The GBA's library is impressive....for a handheld....but the original playstation is arguably the console with the absolute biggest amount/variety of games.

With the PSOne you get:

Resident Evil series
Gran Turismo series
Ridge Racer series
Tony Hawk series
FF VII and VIII
Metal Gear Solid
Castlevania SOTN
Tekken series
Suikoden I and II
Alundra

The list goes on and on. This is not even a fair conest :lol

Still, I would just get a PS Two Slim model and the Pelican 7" screen. Best portable evar!

RE4 and GT4 on the go>>>>*

They're being compared in a context of portability. In terms of a gaming library, yeah, the PS1 is probably the best system ever, but you're not exactly shoving a PSOne and screen in your pocket. Leave the Playstation games for home. I too say the SP, hands down.

SP is obsolete IMO, wait for Micro.

He's right. Wait for the uncomfortably small looking device with an even smaller screen. If you're concerned about image quality, pick up a DS.

The PSone isn't portable by any stretch of imagination ---- tiny yea, but not portable...

I enjoy mine a lot, but it isn't something I've played for more than 20hours (due to how un-portable it is) ....

on the other hand I've played my SP for countless hours ... and honestly the RPG's on the SP are very experemental

I bought a PSOne+LCD screen about a year ago, being able to play Valkyrie Profile on the go is awesome, it must be said though, I usually don't play portables while I'm not near a power source anyways, so this fits my lifestyle pretty well (I just use an adapter for car trips for my PSOne and my laptop), and I barely ever play my PSP while I'm not sitting somewhere.

But really with a car adapter and a decent carrying case, finding a good power source usually isn't much of an issue for me, but if you prefer your portable fix on the bus, or while waiting in line, the SP a must, really they're both great, but PSOne has alot of limits attatched (constant power+it's kinda hard to hold the system+controller, unless you can find a good place to secure the system. Nothing beats being able to take your PS library with you though.

Er, since GBA also means you can play GB and GBC games as well, the library is even larger than the Playstation's. You can play games/series like:

-Metal Gear Solid
-Castlevania AOS
-Metroid Fusion
-Metroid Zero Mission
-Zelda series (There's what...seven of them on GB now?)
-Street Fighter Alpha 3
-KOF EX2
-Tony Hawk Series
-Golden Sun
-Final Fantasy I and II
-F-Zero series
-Donkey Kong '94
-Shadowgate Classic
-Deja Vu 1 and 2

And the list goes ON AND ON AND ON. You can do the same thing with GB as you can with PSX. :P

This is what I'd reccomend as well, unless you can't be near a power source.

It just boils down to whether or not he wants 100% portable gaming, or "semi portable" gaming, and for the third time, get a slim PS2 with a screen instead of a PSOne with a screen.

I work at a game store, so playing games is an option for me a lot of time when it's not busy (which is almost all the time these days), but the PS2 w/screen always comes in handy; I can sit at the counter watching movies or playing games all while ready to deal with anyone that comes in and also I can avoid the lazy bastards that have nothing better to do than hang out in a game store all day-- they can't see what I'm doing. :D

Good point, I think that I'm gonna go with semi portable gaming, the PSone library is just too good to turn down... plus my gf can play Dancing Stage Euromix :) (the ONLY game she will play)

Harry what did you end up buying? And what made you buy it? Give us an update mang

Ok, I was surprised that someone actually bumped this - but as you asked - I ended up buying a GBA SP with the following games -

Zelda - Link to the Past + 4 Swords
Zelda - Oracle of Ages
Advance Wars 2
Sim City (which sucked, so I swapped it for Broken Sword)
Final Fantasy Tactics
Super Puzzle Fighter 2

I'm also getting these on Saturday -

Zelda - Oracle of Seasons
Wario Ware Inc: Mega Games

Not bad considering all these games will cost me about $22 :D

WTF? Is that how much it costs for some dude to steal all those games from a store?

Kidding aside, that's a pretty sweet take!

I think you'll be happy with that choice. Wario Ware is outstanding, and if you like it, you HAVE to get WW: Twisted.

I also highly recommend Racing Gears Advance (how come people are sleeping on that game?) and Astro Boy.
