Do I have to uninstall and old version before installing the new version?

also will it delete the songs I have in the Music Folder if I uninstall it?

Is there a way to clear all the info out of an ipod to make it like new? It doesn't let me update it anymore since it started appearing as a hard drive icon on my desktop.
