There should also be a toad around the castle wearing Luigi's cap now that you lost it.HE will give it back to you.

Check the map for the Luigi cap. Naysayers balk all you want, the map really comes in handy in this game.

If you are playing as Yoshi, you can find a flower and then use Yoshi's fire breath to melt the snowman.
