Help with graphics in Metal Gear Solid 1 on the PC.

Since I was told to stay far away from the Twin Snakes on GCN, and I can't handle the PS1 graphics, I picked up MGS 1 for the PC for a compromise. I installed it and when I went to play it, it said...

This game has detected that your graphics accelerator does not support the functions needed to run it in Hardware Mode. The game will run, but only in Software Mode

...which puts it at 640x480 in software mode. The game is supposed to support 1024x768 in hardware mode, but alas, I get that error. For the record, here is my system...

Pentium IV CPU - 3.3
2 Gigs Ram
Asus P4C800-E-Deluxe Motherboard (latest BIOS, just checked)
nVidia 6800 GT (not overclocked) with latest 81.95 official WHQL Certified drivers.
Creative Audigy 2 Platinum Sound Card, latest drivers.
Windows XP - SP2, all the latest Windows Updates (just checked).
Pioneer 16x DVD Drive, latest firmware, just checked.

I've looked on Google and found two instances of this happening to 2 other people, both of them also had a 6800 video card. I'm at my wits end here... I deperately want to get into this series because of all the rave reviews of MGS 3 and with Subsistence coming in March (my birthday) and also the amazing MGS4 video, I am starting to get into this thing... I just spent a few hours reading the backstory even (from part 2, which I also bought on the PC and it works great). I just can't get part 1 to work in hardware mode, and I really want to play it first, then part 2.

Anyways, has anyone ever heard of this, or could offer some suggestions? Thanks!

J/k, i actually agree, especially if you havent played MGS 1 before. There are some over the top cutscenes that might bother you, also their accents arent quite as in the original, but who cares at least you have clearer and crisper voicework.
 
I still have it coming, but GAF told me it was really bad and not to play it because it's not a true MGS. I could still play it when it gets here monday (I got it on a Gamefly rental, which would suck to send it back, which would waste half a month of my time in the mail).

Also, I just bought this copy for the PC (granted, I got it used for only $6, but still) and would like to figure out how to get it working.
 
P.S. Lets forget for the moment about Twin Snakes (I'll try it when it gets here) and focus on helping me to get this PC version to run first. ;) Any suggestions anyone? Please!
 
honestly. i dont understand where all the twin snakes hate comes from, and never ever will. i tried to play the ps1 original (i also have the pc version) and it didnt age well. twin snakes has some somewhat duller music in SOME places, but everything else is great. the cutscenes are more over the top, but i saw that as a good thing :)

Have you played ANY Metal Gear(Solid) game before? If you havent: play Metal Gear Solid 3 first, if you love and respect it in some way then you should play the original as it was meant to be, if you really couldnt care less and want a a current gen acceptable game...play goddamn Twin Snakes...
 
so yeah id like to know what the original now pixellated mess mgs1 has over twin snakes. wario you should be the first person to think that gfx>>>gameplay you gfx ho :)

I've played part of part one awhile back, got up to the tank battle I think. But since then, no, I haven't play any of them. I'm ready to get into it now. I took the time to read all the back story in MGS2 Substance (I got it for the PC, but at Vintage Stock they had a ton of these on PS2 for only $7.99 which I think is a great deal, also had MGS3 for $26), which was pretty extensive. Took me a few hours to read it all. It read really well though, I liked the writers style, even though a lot of the story elements were really over the top, I really liked it.

Anyhow... I will try Twin Snakes on Monday, but for now, anyone have any ideas on my question about getting it to run in Hardware Mode? Pretty pleeeeeeeaaasssee!!!! :)
 
You should play MGS1(original version) cause the acting is so much better and that's crucial for the emotion filled plot.

And you should play the games in the standard numerical fashion. 1-2-3.
Even if 3 is a prequel, it has alot of nods and humour aimed at 1 and 2.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do! ;) Gimmie some help to get it to run in Hardware Mode and I'm off, to do just that. If I can get it to run, I will play part 1 on PC tonight/tomorrow/monday and finish it by the time Twin Snakes gets here. Then I will play Twin Snakes (I hear it's less than 10 hours) and send it back on Tuesday/Wednesday then I will play MGS2: Substance on my PC and take my time with it till MGS3: Subsistence comes out.

That's the plan anyhow. Just have this problem with my PC running part 1 in Software Mode, and need some help from GAF to get it to run in Hardware Mode.:D
 
Only MGS whores hate Twin Snakes. If you haven't played an MGS title yet, you might as well just play TS for the convenience. Seriously, you guys are cunts.

TS for the first MGS game I played, and I LOVED it. Who knows if I would've enjoyed myself more if I played MGS1 on PS1 instead. But, regardless, it's not like TS sucks, it's still an MGS game.
 
Maybe you should get the PS version, and play it on DC with Bleemcast, or play it on PC using ePSXe. I am sure it will get the same graphic quality like the PC version.
 
You really shouldn't bother with the PC versions of the MGS games, the ports really suck. If thats the only place you can play them then go ahead but if you have the chance of playing them on the PS2 then do that.
 
The voice acting in Twin Snakes may not be as good as in the original, but the cutscenes make up for it. Those were insane.

I had a bigger problem with the cutscenes than with the voice acting.

The only new cutscenes that actually made sense in Twin Snakes is
Grey Fox vs. Metal Gear

Everything else was 'Peter Moore rolleyes' material.
 
there are times when the most current drivers could hinder some games. (i remember one in warhammer 40k where rolling back the drivers helped performance.) You may need to do that since this game probably isn't on their radar as an issue to be fixed. Maybe try a driver from the initial release of the card?

Your rig is too good to play it. :lol Looks like you might have to settle for Twin Snakes. Come on, the PSOne version is only like 10 bucks. Why, that's mere peanuts.

Metal Gear has always tended to have one foot in reality and the other in fantasy. Twin Snakes jumps straight into la la land with those batshit stupid cutscenes. Seriously,
the part where he throws the fucking grenade through the tank barrel to land in the driver's lap? What the fuck was that?

Because basically all of the cutscenes are done in a way like the Matrix. Tons and tons of slo mo effects, lots of flipping for no real reason ect. The first time it happens it looks kind of cool, but once its done in nearly every cutscene it starts to get repetitive.
 
not sure about the version you should try, i mean it could be a dead end.

I actually would rather us not have this argument. I wish we could just focus on finding a fix. And I want to thank you godofcookery, for helping. I'm going to try that right now. brb.

P.S. I was just thinking, Metal Gear Solid, a perfect port, with maybe some small enhancements, would rock on the PSP. I'd play that version if they had one.

That's one of the reasons. The rest of the game is fucking borked. It lacks the difficulty of the first one because they did nothing to modify the MGS2 gameplay features into working well in an MGS1 environment, such as the inclusion of the tranq pistol. This was nothing like the Resident Evil Remake. Graphically, it's not even as good as MGS2 which is like 3 years older and on weaker hardware AND it can't keep a constant 60 fps. Cutscenes are ridiculously exaggerated from the original.

And I'll stop there.
 
Two things you should try (not sure if it will work)

1) Trying going into Display Properties> Settings> Advanced> Troubleshoot and make sure Hardware Acceleration is set to full.

2) Locate the icon your using to start up MGS1 (the icon you click on to get the game going). Right Click> Properties> Compatabilites> Click "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and try setting it for Windows 2000 and work down to 98, then 95. See if those settings give you better resultes.

Usually XP is good about supporting games that may want to use (by current standards) legacy hardware. In some cases when you try to play old games, XP just doesn't work well with them. The compatability mode directions I gave you will hopefully fix that. If those things don't work, then i'm not to sure what it could be but i'll keep an eye out for any fixes.

OT: MGS1 for PSX or the port of the PC are very much more powerfull (in dialogue) than the MGS remake for the Gamecube. The Gamecube one is fun and its cool to see the engine in MGS2 in that remake but its something best played after you play the original version. My personal opinion on that.

Hmmmm. I know that Final Fantasy VII (the PC version) has issues running on XP. Though, FFVII (PC) had some sort of hack to be made to work flawlessy on XP systems.

there is a problem where
when you encounter with Psychomantis, you have to swich your controller from 1P port to 2P.
 
pretty much start with the recent most drivers (which u have) and roll back versions till u get sick of it, or till u hit the first ones. (online final, about to start in about 3 more minutes)

I've been trying to see if anyone is having the same issue and if they've resolved it. Can't find anything really.

One thing some guy said was to actually run the INSTALLER in "98 Compatability Mode" (may want to Uninstall then use that method when you Reinstall). Not sure if that will work, but if you really want to play it on the PC, its worth a try. I'll keep looking out.
