EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have found their new Man of Steel. Henry Cavill has been set to play Clark Kent/Superman in the film that Zack Snyder will direct. Warner Bros is targeting the film for December, 2012 release. Cavill recently wrapped production on The Cold Light of Day and the upcoming Immortals. He has a past with Superman. Before Bryan Singer came on to direct Superman Returns and cast Brandon Routh, Cavill had been one of the frontrunner choices for Brett Ratner and McG before they left the picture. That Superman was younger, and this time, the intention was to cast an actor near 30. Cavill is 27, so things worked out just right for him.

The picture is produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder, with a script by David S. Goyer, based on story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are exec producers. Cavill's repped by CAA.

This is the actor who was runner-up to play Batman behind Bale and James Bond behind Craig. Glad to see him finally win a big role after that.

Zack Snyder has confirmed it

Deadline had been hearing for the past weeks that Henry Cavill was the frontrunner for the much ballyhooed remake. But as of last week, Warner Bros film chief Jeff Robinov hadn't seen his or the other screentests and made his decision in recent days. Cavill recently wrapped production on The Cold Light of Day and stars in the upcoming Immortals, opening this fall. The new film from Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures is being produced by Christopher Nolan and directed by Zack Snyder, who made this statement: “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” Other producers include Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers. The new Superman is targeted for release in December 2012.

He's a handsome, good-looking guy. But I honestly don't see a Superman there at all.

Ledger announced as the Joker wasn't welcomed either, and that turned out miraculously, so of course, anything's possible. :)

Another fuckin' Brit? Jesus. Superman, Spider-man, Batman...

On the other hand, Sherlock Holmes is played by an American... so who knows. However, I think Superman should be played by an American from the midwest.

And should Dracula be played by a vampire from Transylvania? :P

And Batman's a fucking Welshman!

We have a trade going, they got Batman, we got Sherlock Holmes. Now they have Superman, we need someone else. Bond is out of the question for awhile, so who do we get?

Well, I think we got Anna from the King and I. (Jodie Foster in 1999)

But Superman is sacred. We demand Harry Potter in compensation.

You Brits took that one, too!

Interesting! Good to know you can go nude and still land a squeaky clean hero like superman. Tom Welling should take the gloves off after the show ends, among other garments. P

Hah, you fell for our trap. You got the shittest Sherlock imaginable, while we snuck around in the shadows of BBC1 with Benedict Cumberbatch.

But seriously, from what I've seen Cavill is more than capable of playing the role. But then, with Snyder directing, it doesn't really matter who they cast, it's still going to be one hell of an uphill struggle to produce a decent film.

The fuck is going on here? Routh was fine.

I love Routh, but this is a complete reboot without any connections to previous Superman films.

You have to clean house. Including the Superman theme.

Haha, I'm American.

But Superman's an extra-terrestrial, anyway, so it's not as bad.

Also, Gary Oldman is basically an honorary American. We've bestowed that title upon him.

Want to see Brits freak out? An American should play the next Doctor Who once Matt Smith is done.

Oldman is an honorary god, as far as I'm concerned.

Can't wait for Nolan's version of a darker, gritty, more realistic Superman.

Nolan only made Batman darker and grittier than the other batman movies because batman comics are dark and gritty. I doubt that he would do that to superman.

The only thing I've seen him in was The Tudors and he was pretty good in that.

Hollywood turns to Britain again. Is there any role we can't play better than an American?

Hey, he's from where my family hails from and is in that show where people do it a lot. Other than that I have no comment. I guess he kind of looks like he can pull it off?

I still would've totally gone for Jon Hamm though, even if he is pretty much 40. And I didn't have a problem with Brandon Routh either, even if the movie he was in did blow.

They should've just done a movie where Jon Hamm (with the sides of his head dyed grey) and Tom Welling came out of nowhere and fought Routh. Then Welling does some retcon punches and BAM!, no more super-baby. Then Welling dies and Hamm cries and Routh gets to start over.
