I'm not getting an iPod - nothing against Apple, I just don't want one. So what else is decent out there under 400 bucks? Creative? Sandisk? iRiver? What do you guys use, and what would you recommend?

Don't care about video playback or any of that nonsense, just want something to store my tunes on while dealing with the great unwashed on public transit.

Shuffle's the most durable, most covert, and possibly the best low-cost mp3 player out there. Slip it into a USB port, hit "autofill" grab it out, and go on your way. :)

edit: plus Aldi is going to offer the 512MB for $60, I've heard.

I love my iRiver H320. Awesome audio quality, supports pretty much all codecs, FM tuner, built-in microphone for recording, recording options up the wazoo (plug into anything with a line-out and start recording, you can even record radio stations), exceptionally bright color screen, etc. Kicks the ass of any iPod.

iriver!

i have an H10, along with an ever growing group of friends...

and one friend has a PMP140!

Creative Zen Micro Photo (8gig)
iRiver H10 (5/6 gig or the 20 gig version)
Cowon iAudio x5

Both Creative and iriver support drm audio files so you have the option of buying stuff from yahoo unlimited or any other music store other than itunes.

Have you consider a iPod bishoptl, I have heard it is a wonderful glorious addition to anyone life and can bring joy to all that touch and limited happiness to those that pass in a 100 meter radius.

They don't make iRiver H320's anymore so they only way you're going to get one is if you get it off of eBay.

You can get an iAudio X5 though. A 60 gig version is about to be released and it has all the features the H320 has plus FLAC (Lossless support) and is nearly gapless, alarm (for recording off whichever source you select at a specific time automatically).

Plus the shell is pretty much scratch proof aluminum. There's also an L series which has a 35 hour battery life.

H10 is a crippled H320. They discontinued the H320 in favor of the H10 which pisses me off. The H300 series was FAR superior.

Or you could wait for this:

But it probably won't support FLAC and it's flash based.

yah the 20GB H10 does indeed suck

hell, i dunno why they even call it a H10...
1) its not the same size as the 5/6GB
2) it doesnt have a removable battery
3) it doesnt even use the same firmware!

5/6GB H10's are great though!

While I get the complaints about the H10 20gb, I got a good deal on one and it's been wonderful. Also, it sounds a lot better than the iPods I tried while shopping for a MP3 player. And 20gb is above and beyond the space I needed.

Depends what you're going for....if you want a lot of space and don't care how it looks, definitely go Creative.
Cheap(comparitively speaking), reliable, and very durable.

iRiver H10 with a subscription to Rhapsody is an awesome thing.

However I noticed that when changing tracks on the H10 there is a noticable lag...it gets VERY annoying

You can fix that by updating to the latest firmware (2.10) and then defragging.

but when is the zen micro photo coming out though? any one know a solid release date?

I just picked up a Zen Micro 6 gig yesterday and so far I'm loving it. I have a Zen Xtra until I left it on my staircase like an idiot and someone took it. Bastards. Anyways, it was $200 and it's good stuff.

The new Sony players are gapless when you use their Craptrack format, The old iRiver 120/140 has very nearly gapless mp3 plaback and gapless ogg playback with the Rockbox firmware.

Rio (the people made the Karma) had recently sold off their patents to Sigmatel who in turn make the chips inside of mp3 players for Apple, Samsung and Creative. So we could be seeing the features of the Karma (Flac support & gapless) appearing in those companies players in a year or two times.
