Hey, uh, has this ever happened? (McElroy: GAF has actively tried to fool the press)

I don't think you can use an objective scoring system that's purpose is not comparison. You compare the value of one game over another using numbers. The context provided is a cop-out because the only reason the score is there is because their readership likes to get angry and fight over scores. The scores are unimportant if they are not there to be compared. Why give them prominent status on the review page other than to generate page views and get on Metacritic?

I prefer the 'Buy - Rent - Avoid' scale more, honestly. It's direct and has no foundation for comparison whatsoever.

You said to buy Skyrim, but rent Journey? You're a moron!!

The same people who find ways to compare and argue will find a way no matter what, but yeah I'm fine with that system too.

Meh I guess this is a good place to post it. I thought everybody knew games "journalist" were full of shit. Sorry for bad typing, on my phone. Here's my story. my cousin used to read maxconsole all the time. I said it was full of shit. "Tipped them off" about something ridiculous using a random email I created that translated to "lovetowank@gmail.com". without checking anything out they ran it.... then joystick, then kotaku, then everyone. The bullshit got huge. :( making my point that maxconsole was bullshit turn to all blogs were bullshit. To test that theory I then tipped off Rick flair in a bear suit would be in Skate or some shit, stupid as hell just to see how far I can push it. again it was picked up. So yeah. gaming blogs, full of shit.:(

That's sad. :(

Is he sad about McElroy behaving like a tool or is he feeling sad for him because he's empathising with the guy?

I'm so confused.

The real problem here is that all the people that are complaining about how they feel that McElroy is a huge hack in gaming journalism and whatever bullshit employ he encompasses otherwise.

You're feeding into the notion that he apparently deserves an almost 900-fucking-post thread about him and his bullshit on Twitter.

Who cares what he tweeted about? Who cares if he's even right? If we all, collectively, know that GAF doesn't try to fool the press with our shens, then why are we all bothering with this?

McElroy did exactly what you all are doing now: attempting to justify slander by publicly making an opinion seem to be fact.

That people posting on internet message boards should do fact checking and the work of journalist so they can just copy paste what we post here and get payed for it.

I don't think that's much of an opinion. I think that's flat out stupid

I found this guy to be somewhat amusing on the e3 bombcast, but thanks to this I have no interest in ever checking out Polygon, if they can even get their shit together long enough to launch an actual site, lol!

It's flat out stupid that we've spent so much fucking time trying to convey each of our individual opinions about how flat out stupid we think it is.

Move. On.

Look how much time you are spending, tell us how we are idiots for talking about this. Think about it .....

And honestly we have the right to talk about this. The guy is a joke, he does not even care what he says. So fuck it, we are going to talk about it. If you don't like it get out of the thread. So tired of the contrarian bullshit.

I have always wondered why so many writers for the industry have such... contempt for the people who share their interests. I mean, yeah, there's a lot of nasty subcommunities and unfortunate examples of stereotypes come to life on the internet. Duh.

But there's this air of superiority that a lot of them seem to have, where anybody who uses the magical entity known as "The Internet" (which is definitely not same as the internet they make their livings on and use to communicate their thoughts every day) is beneath them and can be disregarded as ignorant rabble.

That's because they don't really want to write about games. They want to work at the PR dept of a publisher or developer and use writing as a stepping stone.

That's why there's such contempt. They aren't writing for us. They are writing for themselves and their eventual industry employers.

Thats what I love so much about PK. He genuinely seems like he just wants to be a very respected games journalist.

And he is one of the few I follow on twitter honestly. I like the guys from RPS/GB also.

Seriously though I really want to like polygon/verge but I knew when they brought Justin over I would not like it. And already threads like these are popping up. It's the same reason I stopped going to Destructoid. I knew good interns there who really wanted to break into the industry, but some of their main writers are just insane. They will post anything for clicks.

Sterling / Justin are good on the podcasts. They need to stay there. Their writing comes across in a way that I just do not like, insufferable on twitter also. Seems odd that the funny guys on the podcasts are the biggest assholes when they write.

PK is one of the good guys for sure.

You're part of the fucking problem, not part of the solution. This isn't some totalitarian authority where any of us are the supreme voice of some contrived idea defined as common sense. You're all being inane. I've posted twice about how long this thread has gone on talking about absolutely nothing, as opposed to the 815+ posts that have been made about backhanding some supposed games journalist posting a comment on the internet.

Then again, it's obviously impossible trying to get a point across to someone like you, as you so frivolously thrived on displaying that elsewhere.

Right, supreme voice of command. "You do not belong here". I believe I was told by you.

You have problems bro.

Thanks for that, I've quickly whipped up an extended GIF in case anyone tries to play the out-of-context card again.

All the more infuriating that he's championing a game that was unplayable for PS3 owners and sold using misleading reviews based on 360 code. Such disgusting sycophancy. If gaming "journalists" had done their fucking job properly, reviews would have informed purchasers of Bethesda's scandalous behaviour. Instead they awarded the company a veritable orgy of GOTY awards.

That criticism is admittedly aimed at the games journalism field at large rather than this one fellow, but his dancing with the game is indicative of such problems.

I'd love to say this isn't true, and for some I don't think it is. I do think a lot of them write fluff to fish for jobs.

Also, in case it hasn't been pointed out: Product reviews =/= journalism, in any way shape or form. That doesn't mean reviewing or critiquing doesn't have ethics to hold itself accountable, but its nowhere near what actual journalism should be.

you idiots are so far removed from your hype that you felt before that game was released. really, it's stupid, but it's not as stupid as you're making it.

It was obviously meant to be a joke.

I don't understand why people are taking it so seriously.

And that is where the problem lies. This thread can continue on for another 800+ posts and everyone will be saying the exact same bullshit, making no particular progress in conversation whatsoever. They're giving people like Michael Pachter the firepower.

because Shurs this is video games..

Serious fucking business.

Edit: This isn't to say that there isn't room for serious discourse about video games, in fact, that's pretty much the only style of game-related material I read. I just think that some people are missing an obvious joke when it comes to that Skyrim gif and they come off as humorless.

Heh, never seen that video before, funny stuff.

And that's what it was supposed to be (i presume) - I think pretty much everyone was excited for Skyrim

I know "games writer, integrity, objectivity" etc etc. but meh, looks tongue-in-cheek

I do hope he comes on here though, just to clear the air perhaps.

Did you guys already mention the time on twitter where he was taunting people who 'marathon streamed' games even though it was for charity donations? Regardless of what someone's doing, you're really going to lambaste people who are getting money sent to charity?

You mean when he was joking about how they could just be considered what they were going to do on the weekend anyway?

Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with this video?

Nope. He jokes around a lot on twitter and in videos and a lot of people seem to have a very hard time picking up on that. I don't know why. His sarcasm and goofs seem ridiculously obvious to me.

Good to see not everyone lost their sense of humor in this whole thing.

I couldn't agree more. They should have scolded Bethesda, and make the issues known to the public, not praise them. Reviews are there to guide the readers, so they can make an informed choice, and in that regard the journalists handled their job poorly. Which is why I trust GAF's take on the games more than any journalist's.

Thats what I love so much about PK. He genuinely seems like he just wants to be a very respected games journalist.

I think he wants to be a games journalist, which is a very minor thing in games journalism. His ethic, attitude, and approach are rarely seen. Maybe Jeremy Parish, and Greg Kasavin when he did that work are the only others that come to mind. Everyone else seems to use it for some fluffy perk or reason that has nothing to do with journalism.

Kinda hard to review a version of the game you don't possess.

reviews are there to make a reviewer's experience known, not to guide a potential purchase.
