Hideki Kamiya: "to say that Yoko-san saved Platinum would not be an exaggeration."

It's a great game. If you didn't continue the story after route A you basically didn't play the game through and honestly don't have much say here. The ones saying 'you have to play through 5 times' honestly sound like they're making stuff up.

Super super happy Nier did so well. Great game and Awesome to hear Kamiya give such high praise. Had no idea the Scalebound thing hit them so hard, what a shit move that was.

Seriously though...Vanquish 2. Do it Platinum

That is good to hear platinum, keep up the good work. But maybe next time get the pc port right the first time in case the publisher, whether it is square or someone else, is too cheap to pay for a patch to fix technical problems.

Good to see the positive effect Automata has generated for everyone. Looking forward to Ni3R and more action RPGs from Platinum.

Platinum just needs to just go ahead and make Bayonetta 3 and release it on PS4, Switch, Xbox One, & PC.

Off topic but I'm wondering when we'll see the first game to launch on all consoles on the same day.

Automata succeeded because it was developed by platinum, not because of the name Nier. No one cared about this franchise before platinum stepped in.
They basically saved themselves

Lol no, Nier had years of build up fanbase while Platinum couldn't release a hit for the past four years.

If you actually take a look at Platinum games releases the only one with success are based on over people's IP.

There are many elements at play and it is not as binary as you two seem to be implying. At the time of Automata's announcement, Platinum had only one 'bad' title that still had stigma carrying them and that was The Legend of Korra.

NieR was not popular. But at E3 of 2015, three titles from PlatinumGames were announced (Star Fox: Zero, Transformers: Devastation and NieR: Automata), so eyes were on them. After both had released to unfavourable critical reception, TMNT released and Platinum's quality started to be questioned.

Automata's initial gameplay exhibition was impressive to nearly everyone as well as the character designs. They were unique but also fetishistic. Afterward, a demo dropped to see if people were interested. The demo had a lot within the thirty minutes of content -- concluding on a high note as well.

After the demo, fan art exploded (especially pornography) started to bring a lot of attention. I have not even mentioned Taro's quirkiness and abnormal personality which is not seen too often in this industry. Persona 5 also got delayed in the west making Automata less contested for that season.

Everything fell into place at the right moment. NieR sunk Cavia, NieR saved PlatinumGames. It was handled properly this time.

Good, maybe we can see Drakengard 4 from Platinum then? :)
Using the Scalebound engine.

I am very happy this game did well for platinum. They made some amazing games with way less success than they deserve.

I am currently 2/3 through route b though and the game so far is... Fine but not their best by far. I liked the combat initially but at the end of route a was kinda bored with it. Then route b has combat that's even worse and more shallow so now I am basically just running past everything since the combat bores me. A shame since I do like the world and the story, and wanting to see where it goes is the only reason I am still going (and the side quest stories are actually pretty great) . But I can see people giving up at the end of a.

It's a great game, but I think theyre underestimating how much they did themselves. The game was great, and it was the whole studio that did that. Not just one man.

People shouldn't disregard royalties either. If a game is successful there is more money in it for them than just the contracted work. For example, obsidian almost died because they didn't get royalties for one game.

Obsidian is an interesting example to bring up, as they were a work-for-hire studio themselves prior to their financial situation getting as alarming as it did. These days, they're finally in it for themselves, but the cost of doing the kind of games that they now do is a lot lower than what it would take for Platinum to be able to strike out on their own. For Platinum, I think that they've had volume on their side in terms of securing financials, though I can't imagine that Activision shutting down their Value branch was an outcome that they were looking forward to. I'm hopeful that the takeaway for Automata's success is that there are more Japanese publishers willing to work with now, since I can't imagine that there's much of anyone in the west that would bother with them at this point.

Let them do Drakengard next because I want to see what a good one of those games looks like.

Also would like to see what kind of nightmare final boss a Drakengard 4 would have.

Yoko taro is going to collab with the DJ max team.

8 button max difficulty Oblivion.

Absolutely. Every part of the team delivered. Akihiko yoshida and his team created a fandom over the character design, Okabe ost was exceptional and the platinum guys delivered a combat system that was sufficient enough to appeal to most platinum regulars and easy enough for newcomers to play the game. Yoko taro had a strong story but it's a pretty long wait to get to the good stuff and the other team members were the reason most stuck by for that long.

Huh, he's retweeting people talking about writing the script for scalebound.

Definitely subtweeting the hell out of microsoft lmao.

jesus. some people really don't understand how Platinum Games work.
people, they're a 'work for hire' studio.
they don't create something, sell it to a publisher and hope they make some money.
They are contractually paid to do work, from the get go.

like a house renovation. a family hires & pays some contractors to renovate their home and give the contractors specific instructions on what they want. contractors oblige.

what the majority of you guys seem to be imagining for Platinum would be the equivalent of the contractors renovating the home on their own, THEN selling it to family in hopes they might like it... then if they do, the contractors have a shot of making some money. like many independent game studios do.
That's not how it works for Platinum, guys.

that's not up to Platinum, that's up to Sega. Pose that question to Sega.

I guess it's time to develope a Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance 2

again, that's not up to Platinum. That's up to capcom. Pose that question to Capcom.

Doubt he would do anything like that again, tbh it's a pretty stupid roadblock to put that holds back a lot of people from finishing the game.

One of the standout things about NierA is that they removed various things that made his previous games cumbersome and the whole experience was a lot smoother because of that.

The big one being the removal of grinding for weapons to get the final ending.

Stuff like this helped NierA appeal to a wider audience.

Platinum should ask Nintendo to do that Sheik action game, Platinum's quality and Zelda fans buying anything, they would be funded for years.

Hopefully we get more awesome games soon.

I'm sincerely glad it sold well because I love this game, but, part of me is a bit like "well done for making a good business decision for a change."

Don't you mean Konami? The fuck does Capcom have to do with Metal Gear?

Also gotta thank Square for making this happen in the first place. Maybe now they'll realize that games sell if they're like...good.

Automata succeeded because it was developed by platinum, not because of the name Nier. No one cared about this franchise before platinum stepped in.
They basically saved themselves

It was a combination of things. Don't over simplify it.

Though you're right that nobody gave a crap about the Nier series until now. Which is better than the series being completely forgotten.

That would be an easy multi million seller.
Hyrule Warriors sold over a million on Wii U and that wasn't too great

Adapting popular licenses with time and budget should prove successful for PG going forward like with Nier and MGSR

Good for both of them. Yoko was gone for awhile outside of the spotlight. Platinum had some consecutive bombs and cancelations and it wasn't looking good until Nier.

I would hope this also means there's some slight, unprobable chance of more Bayonetta for PS4/PC. I mean, they can't keep betting on platforms in which their games bomb.

It really could be fantastic, PG and SE can go really well together.

Picture a Xenogears re-imagining by PG. And if they throw in Yoko Taro into the mix then oh boy.

That's like the worst thing ever. Takahashi and Monolith Soft or bust.

That'll be up to SEGA. But Bayo 2 was funded by Nintendo, it's not like PG "bet" on Wii U being a success or anything

Still there but this time it's optional.
If u collect and fully upgrade all weapons u get to fight Emil as secret boss

What made the experience much smoother this time is having much, MUCH better item drop rate for quests and upgrading weapons.

Akihiko Yoshida saved Platinum then. If it wasn't Platinum that sold Nier Automata then it definitely wasn't Yoko Taro. It was 2B's design.

Wow, I actually kinda agree with this too.
If it were another typical anime JRPG with another dark storyline then whatever. Typical stuff that I probably read/play before.
But the artstyle and direction with the robotic and characters like A2/B2/9S/Eve put the game on another level than just another JRPG.

I remember watching the trailer, it was how stylish 2B was doing her combo that sold me on the game.
2B and her design sold the game, not an intangible concept like plot and story.
You can't really sell that to the audience.

And like what other people said....No one cared about Nier beside the music nor did anyone care about Drakengard as well.
But the sleek black style of A2/B2/9S/21O made people watched the trailer and preordered the game.

Yup I agree as well. Even though there was a little bit of hype from Nier fans about Automata, it was 2B's design I think that REALLY got Automata onto people's radars. There was 2B fanart and cosplay everywhere leading up to Automata's release- it definitely caught the interest of a lot of people who wouldn't have given it a second glance.

Seriously, if all it took was a good character design there'd be a ton of Japanese games, or games in general, selling 1 million+ units. But there aren't. Good character design does not solely make a game successful.
Not everyone can be Overwatch. Splatoon is close but it's gameplay is what really grabbed people.

Yeah, word of mouth because of B2 design and her stylish action gameplay trailer, not because of Taro.

Taro and his two last games were average at best.
NieR and Drakengard 3 were almost unplayable with bad frame rate and sloppy narrative. The only redemption? The awesome music.

If I didn't watch the trailer, and you told me Nier 2 was coming out, I couldn't care less because from past experience, and historically, Taro is known for his weird plot and storytelling but almost unplayable game mechanic.

Why buy it day 1? Just wait for the bad reviews and pick it up for cheap.
Be honest with yourself, you know it is the truth.
Historically, Taro's games are usually rated pretty low due to these issues.

PG, imo, actually saved Taro, not Taro saving PG.
At least this time, we don't have to play a game with 15 avg fps and sometime dropping to single frame. Taro got lucky to be partnered up with PG when you think about it.
And this is coming from a NieR and Drakengard fan...kinda.
(I only play Taro game for his surreal writing on romance and sometime weird incest vibe, and his fetish/love to create tragic events for anyone and anything. If his games were anime/movie, it would be better instead of us playing them.)

Maybe want to visit the game's review thread, check the OT or watch some youtube Nier: A analytic/impressions/etc videos... Pretty much single thing that the game got praised for the most is the story and it's what sparked most of the discussion around the game.
