You can go back and read 50+ year old sci-fi books by Arthur C Clarke, Philip K Dick, Daniel Galouye, and many others, that were able to extrapolate modern tech and soon to be modern tech from what they saw in their current eras with a much larger gap between idea and reality. Like you said, the standards when it comes to these things in games is astronomically low so when we do see it, it's surprising.
