WASHINGTON— Hillary Clinton has widened her lead to 25 percentage points in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.

The former secretary of state leads Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders 59% to 34%, a slightly larger margin than the 19-point gap in December.

The new national poll comes as surveys in Iowa and New Hampshire show the race tightening in the states that play host to the first two nominating contests. While losses there would be a setback for Mrs. Clinton, the new Journal/NBC News survey suggests that she would retain strong advantages in the later primaries. Mrs. Clinton owes her durable lead nationally to her strength with key subgroups in the Democratic primary electorate, including nonwhite, older and moderate-to-conservative primary voters.

The race looks much different in Iowa and New Hampshire. Aggregates of recent polls show the contests to be close in both states, with Mrs. Clinton edging Mr. Sanders in Iowa and the Vermont senator claiming a lead in neighboring New Hampshire.

Would Hillary be doing as well if she was a man? I feel like the "first female president" prospect is carrying her to a large degree.

At the same time though, I guess there are a lot of voters that refuse to vote for her just for that reason.

She'd be a lot more popular if she were a man, women in politics have to deal with a lot more double standards due to sexism.

Looks like the low viewership of the democratic debates are helping Hillary. There is another debate tonight that is scheduled against the NFL playoffs.

Except all the playoff games will be over by the time the debate starts.

These debates have been helping Hillary anyway.

Except she's won ever debate so far, if they wanted to help her they'd put these things on in prime time when everyone's watching.

Progressives who are Bernie fanatics cannot complain, they also contribute to the identity politics, so now they have to see their candidate suffer for it.

Its not a switch they can turn on or off.

Two issues.

1) Games are over well before the debates so you might have wanted to look into that before repeating talking points from twitter.

2) He has lost the debates according to all credible polls and the media.

The poll only considers registered dem voters, and people who caucused last election. It didn't consider independents. Terrible poll. But it's the Wall Street Journal, what could you expect.

If there were tons of debates the talking points would shift to "Bernie's ideas can't be conveyed properly in a debate format!"

More debates aren't going to help Bernie. After every debate Clinton is viewed as the winner from both voters and reporters. At some point Sanders just has to get better at debating.

Gotta say as a black voter myself I'm just not feeling Bernie. He feels too 'pie in the sky' for me. Not to say I speak for other black voters, just my own perspective abut him.

I didn't vote for Obama during the primary either, I went Hillary.

According to every single statistical measure, yes she has.

What measures would those be?

I thought Sanders came off as much more passionate, honest, and prepared in the debates, but obviously I'm very biased. Clinton seemed bland and almost bored.

Every single poll taken of voters after these debates has Clinton winning. You can say how you felt, but apparently the electorate doesn't agree.

??? When you say credible, what do you mean exactly?

He means real polling and not self-selecting internet polls, which are statistically useless.

Yep. Time for Bernie to call in some favors from Killer Mike. Maybe a new hashtag to refresh the campaign.

He needs to hit the Bernie Lean.

Has everyone watched the interview series at Mike's barber shop he did with Bernie? Go watch it. All Bernie needs to do is get out and talk to people and he'll resonate. It will be a slow Bern (lol) but I think he has time to win the nomination. If he does that, he'll win the election. It is very exciting times.

Evidently, for Bernie to win.

Cue MSM attacking the Bern... except all the articles have been about Clinton losing the lead and how Sanders is surging.

Cherry picked poll, or reality check?

I'm personally ok with any of the democratic party candidates. I fully support Clinton and Sanders. And I have no reservation whatsoever voting for Clinton.

Aren't registered democrats the only people that matter at this point?
