Hold it! A little Lttp: Phoenix Wright

I picked this up a couple of weeks ago at eb after hearing it was getting in short supply. Just finished it recently, and I have to say it's one of the great DS games IMO (even though it's really a GBA remake with an extra case.) Certainly not for everybody (lots of story and text, not a lot of action), but I found that the stories and characters were really interesting and that the game progression was great. The way the cases opened up day by day along with the funny characters and fighting game sound effects among other things, really give this a personality that's pretty rare.

I thought it was surprisingly long, even though I would have liked a few more cases because it was so good. I'd love to see the other GBA ones remade (or just translated), but given the currently < 30k sales in the US of this, it looks like I might just have to be happy this one made it over. Anyone on the fence about this one, I'd highly recommend picking this up now before it becomes really hard to find.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that the soundtrack was great as well, is there any place to buy it?

I think the sales won't have much to do with the others coming over. It's pretty obvious that Capcom wasn't expecting much from the game in the first place if it's already become rare and it only sold ~25K. I think Capcom only shipped about 30K in the first place.

If you check the Phoenix Wright thread, somewhere near the end, someone posted it up... probably gone now though as that was over a month ago. (I eventually bought it though)

Edit: sorry, link in that thread no longer works :(

I guess this is the new PW thread.

I finally beat the last level, and I'm not so happy. The writing took a hit, some of the puzzles were more arcane, and the characters aren't as likable. However, the new gameplay elements are spiffy-o and I hope they're incorporated into the next game.

I liked the characters in the last level (although I agree they're not the best group in the game), but I agree the writing wasn't as sharp. It seemed a little more rushed (noticed some typos, after noticing none earlier) and wasn't as witty IMO. I still like the last level a lot, and like you said the DS specific elements added something to the investigation scenes.

I liked the game, but IMO it's more a must-rent than a must-buy.

BTW, there is a fan-translation of Gyakuten Saiban 3 which IIRC has completed up to the first case...

Hasn't PW2 been confirmed or is that for Japan only so far?

Anyway, I also thought it was a great game and I can't wait for more.

This is what made me basically grab Phoenix Wright and jump for joy when it was announced for the first time for US release.

A new Ace Attorney game has been confirmed in Japan, but it seems that they are getting rid of Nick for this one. The first Ace Attorney game on the DS was a remake of the first game on the GBA, there are two more GBA games that follow it. This is the 4th new game in the series for Japan, so it would make sense to get rid of Nick if they aren't going to bring the other GBA games in the series here but it's quite disappointing that we won't get to see more of Nick and the gang from this game again. Here's to hoping that we get a special Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2+3 game for the DS or even the GBA so that we can all see what happens to Nick in the other games in the series.

it is impossible to be late to the party for this game. it's like a legendary kegger, where two of the hottest girls there got drunk and started making out, but then before the party got any where the cops come and busted it up... still a cool party for everyone who was there before things got shut down, but alas most of the people who wanted to go were never able to make it.

I would about kill for an American release of PW 2/3. Maybe they could do a limited release like Nintendo is doing with Electroplankton?

I was fashionably late to this party. I loved the game. One of the most original experiences in recent gaming. The first four missions were fantastic.

I didn't care for the DS-exclusive mission. There were too many plot twists which just made it absurd, to the point that I just wanted it to end. I liked the touch screen mechanics implemented, but that 5th case story/logic/deduction process was ludicrous.

If this is true, then 80-90% of the copies shipped sold. Could this be a hint to Capcom that there is a market and might make them think about producing more? I mean it's selling for 40 to 60 dollars on ebay, (the funniest right now is one for 3 dollars US but 55 dollars for shipping).

Phoenix Wright is the best game on the DS and the best reason to own one.

I want Ace Attorney 2 and 3, Capcom!!!

I personally thought case 5 was the shit. Yeah, there were more plot twists (and perhaps, more plot holes) than anything... but it was so enjoyable, I never wanted it to end really. Great stuff all around.

good game. I finished this a few weeks ago and agree with everything thats been said. I am a little confused how many of these games are out there that have not come to the US

Can someone list all the Gyakuten Saiban games in chronological order and which ones were included in PW:AC in the US?

IMO, it was much too uneven in its quality. Also, it was rather painful having to go through the procedures when you realize that if the game allowed you, it would be quicker to just get to the point.

GS1
GS2
GS3

GS1 was remade completely for the US, which is known as we know it today, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. All 4 cases are there including the exclusive 5th case soely for the DS version. GS2 and GS3 have yet to hit American shores, and weren't apart of PW1.

This game rocked my penis. I haven't played an adventure game this good since Sam & Max. Fuck, this may be better than Sam & Max.

Good luck trying to find a place that rents rare DS games. Buy it, get 15-20 hours of fun out of it, regardless of replay value.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I remember reading an import review of GS3 awhile back at IC but back then considering I didn't know what the hell GS at the time (not to mention I was tricked in that the article wasn't really a review), but it still looked pretty cool.

Thanks! 2 more hours of PW goodness, here I come! :)

yeah, it's a pretty good case. A lot longer than the first case in Phoenix Wright 1, and none of that investigation crap. Great characters too, and funny as hell. He did a good job with the translation.

Just bought the game at EB last night, they still had about 3 in stock.

I'm by the Steel Samurai case, pretty entertaining game so far.

Wow, I'm surprised we get to be
Mia
in GS3!! Muchless that
Phoenix
is the defendant in the first case!!! I wonder what other surprises there are in GS3. Now I'm sad that they show no indication of them coming back for GS4. :(

Just finished that newly-translated first level of GS3. Rather enjoyable, I have to say.

Nice to see the old courtroom favorites in this lengthy first "tutorial" case, which clocks in at around two hours. Sorry for the somewhat dull screen captures, didn't want to spoil
playing as Mia, though -- being a flashback and all
;-)
