Holding off on Next Generation Gaming

Why only 10? Don't you pretty much have every single 360 game preodered?

I was caught up in the E3 360 hype and, while I have absolutely no doubt that it will be incredibly successful, I've decided to hold off until next year. There are two many current gen games I want and while I have plenty of money, my wife isn't real keen on the following:

March:
PSP + 1GB card + 3 games = $500
GOW + GT4 + DMC3 + $150

April:
HSG:OT $40

Later this year: - $800
Shadow
Genji
GTA:LCS
Burnout: PSP
SOCOM 3
Jak X
Dragon Quest VIII
Kingdom Hearts 2
Onimusha 4
Castlevania
Sly Cooper 3
The Warriors
MGS3: Subsistence
Radiata Stories
Okami
Resident Evil 4
(I've gotta be getting 3 or 4 other PSP games)

Next Year:
HDTV (preferably 1080p) ~$2,000
PS3 (~$400?)
4 PS3 games ($200-$240)
several Blu-Ray movies

Just way too much money and not enought times to play the games as it is.

Although, I'll probably break down and get the 360 anyway, just for some great next gen graphics a bit earlier.

Dude. Wait a year or two and you'll be able to get that HDTV for 1/3 the price.

Xbox 360 and PS3 on day 1. Can't wait for PGR3, Oblivion, DOA4, and a few more.

Revolution is where I have my doubts. Nintendo better have something extremely enticing for their launch or I might wait until a next gen Zelda comes out to get it, if I do at all.

I won't buy any new systems this year. It's already been stated, but there are too many good games left this gen (Zelda, HL2, Black, BO4, Tomb Raider, King Kong, StarCraft Ghost etc. etc.) and new systems are often too pricey and problematic. Add to that, I don't have an HDTV. I still haven't seen a killer app on 360 yet either. Next year's a different story. So far the only system I'll buy at launch is Revolution, mainly because it will have a different type of game and probably launch cheaper. If it turns out like GC and doesn't have a whole lot of racers/fps's, I'll pick up a PS3 or 360. Until then, I'll wait for a price drop. Next gen is still being rushed imo.

I'm waiting. There are at least 15 or so GCN and Xbox titles I want to play, and I'm about to buy a PS2 (which I've never owned).

My backlog is far too large and there are quite a few games still slated for this gen that I want to buy and so far, the x360 launch doesn't look like it's going to be enough to move me. I'll stick with this gen until I finish off the plethora of games I need to play, and then I will move on, which should be around the time the other two consoles hit. I'll still end up purchasing all three though.

Its really easy. There are two logical times to buy a new console: 1) when they get their second wind, after the initial OK launch titles and following inevitable drought; 2) when the price drops. Often the two points coincide.

If you follow logic and enjoy games, thats when you'll buy a 360 or PS3. You'll possibly even know more about both to help decide which one to buy if you are only choosing one.

Me? I'll probably buy them all at launch. Not logical, but fun.

I'm going to get a 360, and then I'll buy the others at price drops. I don't normally buy at launch but I play LIVE with family/friends and that is what's roping me in.

I'll get the 360 and PS3 on day one. Like IJoel, I'm taking a wait-and-see approach with the Revolution. If it has a few good launch titles, I'm sure I'll break down and pick it up on release day. If not, I'll wait for a price drop or good pack-in deal.

I'll probably do the same thing I did for this generation. I'll wait until there are 4-5 games that I want from the Greatest Hits (or equivalent) lineup before buying a next gen console. The cost of games is more important to me than the cost of the console.

Anyone how isn't buying Okami needs to stop gaming.

I dunno... It's still something of an unknown quantity, imo. The E3 demo looked like a bunch of fetch quests, and there's not really any indication of how long the game will be or how well it will all turn out.

Capcom's track record has this on my radar, but I don't know that I'm getting it for sure yet.

Same as I said before. Unless there's a Mario64-level event on one of the consoles, I'm not buying any at launch. First time I haven't purchased a system at launch in well over a decade, but the funds + unbelievable current-gen offerings + no spark for next-gen yet = wait for later. Maybe I'll buy when the systems all have their first round of price drops, or maybe it'll just take Halo 3, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Pikmin 3.

You sound so defensive, but you're essentially dead on. We don't know what these systems will cost, don't know more than a few launch titles, don't know for sure what the games themselves will cost, don't know when the competition is coming out, and we're staring in the face of a truly stellar fall lineup for most of the existing systems.

There simply isn't anything on the 360 that makes my jaw drop yet. I am definitely interested in PGR3 & the new Elder Scrolls game but the former can always wait and the latter I can play on my PC (where I can mod it!).

I am getting closer to the point where the potential of next-gen is exciting, but I find it hard to believe that any next-gen game in the next 12 months will compete with DQ8, Zelda, FFXII, etc...

Well, not, I won´t hold anything. As far as I can I will buy new systems at launch (that´s it, if I can avoid ridicule overprized imports becasue god knows that it will snow in the hell before buying another PAL system).

That won´t stop me to keep buying games from this generation, same I have done with PSone games for example (my last PSone was like 1 month ago). It all depends of money avaliable, but I want always the better or whatever I´m most interested, new or not so new. Checking the first games of a new system it´s always a guilty pleasure of mine, I love the feeling of exploring new lands (no matter the new land is full of savages that will rape you hard as happened with PS2 ;))

Not defensive, we've just had like eight of these threads ;)

I mean, I look at things from best case scenario. Let's say games remain 50, and system launches at 299.99... and all systems get just as many good and bad games as they did the previous gen.

Still, there's no spark for launch, and I can't afford next-gen systems PLUS all the great games finishing out this gen. I mean, I probably could afford them with some difficulty, but it's just not worth the effort/extra work ya know? Not for what was shown so far. Basically, what was shown said next-gen is gonna be good... but there's no reason to rush.

Oh, there's things that made my jaw drop. But I'm also picky. PGR3 made my jaw drop, but I don't care for that series. And I don't look to games like Elder Scrolls which have a PC equivalent because I can just buy it on my PC then, ya know? I look for exclusives. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty I do want at 360 launch... but not enough to actually adopt right away. All can be received at a later date for a quarter of the price, which is about exactly how much I tend to always find launch games are worth :P

And don't get me started on PS3. If the PS3 launch is even half as bad as PS2 launch, I won't even consider the thing until a year later.

Rev is too far out for any real speculation, though.

I generally don't buy consoles at launch (in fact, it's only happened once). On top of that , I don't know what each system is going to cost, so there's no way in hell I'm commiting to any system yet.
Dreamcast?

DCX

I am going to buy Revolution when it launches assuming there is a game or two I want launching with it (Mario, Zelda, whatever).

I will hold off on the other two for now, I need to catch up on my PS2 games.

The 360 has a few games I'm sort of interested in, but I'll wait to see if those games are eventually ported to the PS3 (most of them are potentially non-exclusive), since I'd rather not buy both machines.

Right now, the PS3 is the only sure bet for me next gen, and even that I doubt I'll be getting at launch, especially with Sony's nasty hardware rep. Besides, I still have plenty of gaming left to do in this generation.

I'll wait. Between the facts there's a long list of upcoming PS2 games and a short list of upcoming GameCube games I want--don't own an Xbox--and nothing announced for the next generation consoles that really interests me, my money is better spent elsewhere.

Hell no. This gen has been way to long already. Dreamcast in 1998, Xbox now. Not that much difference in the last 7 years I`d say.

Lets see I don't think I will be getting either PS3 or 360 at launch, but if Nintendo does deliver something unique, quirky, and fun, I will be buying the Rev. Also if they have a Super Smash Brothers game ready for launch. That will be a big reasurance to me.

But I still have to look at this Gen and gag at how many quality titles are coming out. Plus I'm about to buy a PS2 (most likely anyways).

Gamecube

Zelda Twilight Princess
Fire Emblem
Viewtiful Joe Battle Carnival
Battalion Wars

I still need to pick up these games to

Baten Katos
Pikmin 2
Zelda: Four Swords

DS

Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga 2
Scratch! Viewtiful Joe
Advance Wars DS
Lost in the Blue
Castlevania

PS2 (If I get it)

Ico
Wanda and the Collosus
Shadow Hearts 1-2
Lapucelle Tactics
Metal Gear Solid 3
Katamari Damaci 1-2

Hah... No, Gamecube.

I missed to the DC and PS launch frenzy due to lack of funds and time. Plus, I couldn't bring myself to spend more than $200 for a console. Unfortunately, I may have to increase that figure for next-gen systems, even if I do wait 6 to 12 months after launch.

Unfortunately people aren't actually reading the topic and just responding as...

"HAHA NEXT GEN YEAAAA BABY IM GETTING IT!!"

To each their own, but I just don't find these "I'm gonna buy/I'm not gonna buy" topics all that enlightening. A lot of people will buy the next gen consoles when they come out. A lot of people won't buy the next gen consoles when they come out. I just don't understand what these topics are supposed to demonstrate.

Oh, I think you do.

j/k. I basically spouted off the self-justification that goes on in my head when I think about it.

This will be the first time in a long time that I don't automatically jump on the new gen.

It's gonna be hard, seeing as how I've been getting what I want, when I want it. But no more. I have all of this gens systems-and I feel like I've never really scratched the surface with any of them.

Not buying the PSP was a small first step, but not running to the store on day one for consoles will be a real test. I'd just rather slow down and really enjoy one system.

My personal dilemma/2 cents :)

See, i'm guessing you didn't read the topic either. I didn't ask if you were buying or not. I posed a question to those that weren't jumping into next generation of why. Is it because of lack of launch titles, are we as consumers getting more wary of launches, the huge upcoming list of games coming out for this generation still? Just wondering how many people felt this way and the reasoning and to gauge if maybe there will be a shift in how successful new system launches will be if this keeps up.

Initially I thought of getting a 360 at launch. New Madden, Perfect Dark, Ghost Recon, had me hooked. But I still doubt PD will make it for launch, I can live without Madden, and lack of broadband at my place kills GR. Plus I'm getting a big ol' whiff of sequel-itis from the announced 360 and PS3 line-ups.

I think I'm gonna wait until the ICOs, Psychonauts, Katamaris hit before I take the plunge.

Another factor for me is that the 360 isn't really doing much to differentiate itself from the other consoles for someone like me, who's not much of an online console gamer. The Revolution is an unknown quality and it promises new spins on Nintendo franchises I know I love. The PS3 is almost certain to be the market leader, and as a result it should be home to more niche games than the other two consoles.

If I'm going to become a 2-console gamer next-gen, which I kind of want to do, the 360 seems the easiest one to ignore. Of course my perceptions of what next-gen's consoles will be is based largely on how last gen played out, but until that's proven otherwise, I have to assume it will be business as usual.

I know you didn't ask, but topics like this still turn out that way, and my point is - why do people think it newsworthy if they will or will not be buying a next gen console? Plenty of people won't. There are no trends to be demonstrated here. I mean, this has got to be at least the tenth similar topic in the last two months. All three of these consoles are going to sell out ASAP, and yet, plenty of gamers will not have bought them. I am just puzzled at what these topics hope to accomplish.

If perfect dark zero steps up ill get a 360, loved the n64 version.

Otherwise im waiting till killer games come out, especially interested in what nintendo are going to bring to the party.

I see your point, but it's still interesting to see how other GAFers feel about the stuff we're seeing, though....

Fuck waiting. Xbox 360 will be in my hands this year, and if I don't have enough money, Xbox, PSP, family, pets and whatever will go towards trading for a 360.

By the way, "backlog" should be a bannable word on GAF. Games should go back to when there was no real motivation to "end" the game. In the fighting game days, you bought a game and played it almost exclusively for years trying to master it, and you were seeking competition everywhere. Heck, I met some of my best friends by seeking competition. Nowadays, games are played only to be finished, and gamers are crying whenever they wait 2 years for a game that they're gonna play for 2 or 3 days (like Fable).

Flarkminator, your Setsuna avatar rocks.

Yes, I do have 30+ games reserved for the 360. I said 10+ because I don't know what will make launch day yet. I, the technophile in me, can't let newer tech come out and I not have it. If I can afford it, it's mine. Therefore, the 360 is mine. It also helps that the Xbox is probably my most cherished console ever.

No I'm not waiting. I've had an HDTV for 3 years now and I've been waiting a long time to put it to good use.

Every next gen console is also going to be backwards compatible, so I think your argument about the current generation is moot. You can still play all of the new releases for this generation on the newer consoles, so there goes your argument about waiting because this generation still has a lot of life left.

I'm also jumping all over Xbox 360 because of its functionality of acting as a media center extender for my media center PC. I was going to put a Tivo on my Christmas list, but I won't need to do it now, because I'll be able to use the PVR functions of my media center PC through the Xbox360 on my 48" Widescreen. That saves me $300 plus subscription fees for TiVo.

IAWTP!

This was the first gen that I bought all the systems on launch. I learned my lesson with the faulty hardware and then seeing pricedrops/bundles being offered. I won't be buying until a nice bundle is available or the first price drop.

As it stands, we'll be getting a Revolution for sure, and I'm undecided between PS3 or XBOX 360. I'll wait until alot of titles are announced that appeal to me, then I'll decide. Although, Halo 3 is very, very tempting...

For the majority of gamers, on a budget and with not a lot of time to play games to jump to next generation this holiday would mean missing the bunch of games coming out this holiday. Now the majority of your time will be spent playing launch games, after all, that's what you are getting it for, right? Then of course you got more next gen games coming as time passes so realistically are you going to go back to all those games you just missed over the holidays? Are you going to have the moila to pick up all those games and still pick up next gen games? The time to play all those games? Some people do, and thats great, never worked for me for the PSone/PStwo switch though and I still see to this day people posting asking if they should play so and so PSone game. I missed alot of good psone games coming out that year, but can barely remember the PStwo games, Eternal Ring anyone? Fantavision? Most were cool looking at the time, but none memorable. If I would stuck with my PSone games I would have ended up playing Vagrant Story and FFIX just for two.

This topic was mainly to see if anyone else felt that way, or for other reasons why they may be skipping the launch bandwagon. It's not an argument really because I don't care why you are getting it, that much is pretty obvious for anyone jumping on the launch bandwagon, as I have said repeatedly i've been there and done it too.

I'll probably pick up a PS3 as soon as I can. The 802.11 wireless on-line play is a huge selling point for me. I mean, I could get the hardware to wirelessly get my PS2 on-line, but why bother? Then it will just sit around and rot when I get my PS3.

I'll be picking up a PS3 to play PSU.

Then I'll wait for the PS3 software to hit bargain bins and greatest hits, whatnot.

I'm getting a Revolution the year it launches. If the rumors are true and it can hook up to computer monitors or it comes with a visor; PREORDER GET!

I'll mostly get Revolution for the backlog of GCN games. RE0 - RE4, Twin Snakes, Celda, Zelda: TP, Metroid Prime 2, and Ikaruga.

Between that, DS, and PC, I'll be set.

I'm starting to really think one could make a topic title and then the post inside be on something entirely different ignoring the topic title and people would still post a reply on just the topic title alone. :lol
