Holding off on Next Generation Gaming

Hmm I don't know. My consoles are getting less game-time by the month (sometimes I don't even touch any console for a week). I own the current-gen consoles except for Dreamcast, I haven't touched my xbox for over a year, my PS2 only gets some time when I'm having a party (SingStar oh yeah!) and my GameCube gets one hour in every three weeks or something. The only game I've played this month was Paper Mario on N64, and there's about 5 houres on the clock now.
Maybe it's because of my work, but I've lost most of my passion for gaming. I once said I'd buy any system on which a Zelda is released but I'm not even hyped up for Twilight Princess at the moment. If I don't get a 360 from work then I'm going to buy the system with the most 4 player splitscreen games on it.

I'll be tapping some X360 ass at launch fo sho! Depending on what the price of games/accessories are will determine what I buy. If wireless controllers are 50-60 bucks I probably won't buy another one until they drop 20 bucks in price. I would be content with a 30 dollar wired X360 controller then. If games are 60 bucks I won't pick up as many as I would at 50 bucks. I'll be jumping into next gen right away, but I'm not going to spend a crazy amount of money to do so.

I'm holding off for now. I'm starting to get older, and it is harder to justify spending $300 or more just to have the newest system. Maybe next Spring if the games are there, but I'm in no hurry at present.

If Rev is cheap enough I might get it at launch, as for 360/PS3 Im definately waiting for at least six months after launch cause there really isnt anything that yanks my crank right now. Plus Im fairly broke so thats a big factor. I own a 7 year old 32" TV so I wont be in the "HD era" for quite some time. Im not really going to have alot of time to play games cause of school/gf..... come to think of it, maybe I should just sit this one out. :|

Overall i'm wondering if with the onslaught of great current generation games lined up for the holidays and shortly after and a general underwhelming attitude of most next gen games being shown if there are many more people taking a wait and see approach and being a little more hesitant to slap down a ton of money on next gen this soon.
Well I was excited about getting an X360 at launch before the MTV event, and that left and subsequent media have all left me thinking 'meh' - the 'greatest launch lineup ever' hype was way offbase (although really no launch lineup has been great..). I agree that the current gen is still in its prime, we have great titles coming in for all platforms and for me at least there isn't a dire need to upgrade asap.

I think for next-gen I will wait until a game with exciting gameplay AND great 'next-gen' graphics comes along, so far we have TES: Oblivion as the only game to fill that requirement. PGR3 is just another racer (not a system seller to me), and GOW is a beautiful game but frankly it doesn't look like it would be too exciting to play (from the gameplay clips I've seen). 1 game isn't enough for me, so I can easily see myself holding off (unless PDZ is great) until say, Halo 3 and a few other greats come along.

See with PS3 its an easier matter for me, I know it will have exclusive games en masse that I want, and now it won't get downgraded 3rd-party titles. I think around PS3s launch the current-gen will be losing a lot of its steam (Q2-3 06), so that coupled with the knowledge of inevitable MGS/FF games makes it a far easier decision than X360 (of which only Halo3 do I *need* to play).

Thank you, oh dear god thank you for actually reading the topic and not just posting "i'm not waiting i'm getting a xbox 360 yo!" completely ignoring the topic posted. I was losing my faith in humanity there.

I'm leaning more towards your viewpoint but i'm going to hold out till the following holiday to get a clearer picture of the two and hopeful price drops. Besides not wanting to miss any of this current generation games, and lackluster launch games all around i'm really interested to see how multiplatform/exclusive games are going to shape out. It was a major issue with Xbox/PS2 since most of the games I own on xbox could have been bought on PS2 if not for the better graphics. With that not being a case either way next generation i'm leaning more towards only one console purchase between the two dependant on exclusives. So i'm also interested in if gamers are going to be more frugal this coming generation and not own multiple consoles.

Why would anyone that can actually afford these next gen consoles hold off??
I can understand if someone wants to hold off due to money though. If the games at launch of these new systems are not that enticing then wait till you feel you need to have these new systems. I on the other hand have no problem buying these new consoles on launch day with one or two games and then after those are done still spending the majority of my time playing games from our current generation. I did it last time, the only game I had for my PS2 for like 4 months was Onimusha. And that wasn't a problem at all.
Just because I own an Xbox360 doesn't mean I can't still buy a game from this generation and play it too.

I'm looking forward to all the good games that come out this year. This gen or next.

It becomes a question of Cost/Hours of use.

If I don't have time to really play it, dropping $350 for a new console and a game becomes expensive per hour of actual use.

Of course. But that means you don't think you can afford it or it's currently not worth the money to you to have it. Which is cool.
But what I mean when I say "afford" is if you have the disposable income and you like games then why wait? There is no point really.

I'll be getting Xbox 360 at launch with various games. I'll mostly have it for research though, to see what other companies are doing as well as Madden and PGR3 :D

I'm planning on holding off too.

I don't see the need to rush out and buy these consoles and games at the inflated prices they'll have at the beginning. I'll have more than enough money to buy all the next gen consoles w/ a number of games for each of them, but that doesn't mean I'm just going to throw my money away when it won't be worth it.

Most launches have crappy games and faulty hardware (well, PS...). Why should I pay a premium price for the hardware and an extra premium for the games on top of that? It's stupid and it isn't necessary, especially when this gen is going to pump out titles well into 2006 to keep me busy (that and I have a backlog of ~10 games).

Initially I was so excited about the next generation of hardware but that the "OMG NEW SHINY TECH MUST HAVE NOWNOWNOW" urge has faded with the help of a somewhat disappointing E3 and a killer list of quality lookin' current gen games, namely rpgs (DDS2 = YUS!).

When I look at the Xbox 360 I see a lot of oh-so-pretty but potentially mediocre launch games; stuff like Condemened, Full Auto, and Kameo just looks like it'll suck. Gears of War is the only title on the 360 that looks like it has the potential to be a game that would get me to actually buy the system. The PS3 and Revolution don't even have an actual games to show, just teaser trailers and tech demos, if the Rev has zero third party support I ain't gonna buy it. It's gonna be easy to hold out on buying a system at launch, I don't want to pay a retarded amount of money for one at launch, and then buy anything half decent that comes my way because of the post launch drought.

The next generation doesn't begin for me until I see Street Fighter 4, the next Megaten rpg, Nippon Ichi Strat game, Metal Gear Solid 4, a new Zone of the Enders, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Guilty Gear and what not instead of some glorified tech demo that has hundreds of [insert object/thing here] onscreen all at once that I can use to try and impress my friends with, and vainly use to convince myself that it was worth the price of entry.

I just bought La Pucelle: Tactics, Disgaea, Phantom Brave and have Makia Kingdom coming in a day or two. Strat rpg overload right there, then take into account I haven't beaten Front Mission 4 or Stella Deus. I have Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 pre-ordered and fully paid for. Then there's games like Grandia III, Radiata Stories, Final Fantasy XII, that Devil Summoner remake (PLEASE ATLUS!), We Love Katamri, MetalGear Solid 3: Subsitence, Tales of Legendia, Soul Calibur III, Shadow of the Colossus, and who knows what else...I'm set for quite a while with what's left in this gen of hardware.

First significant price drop, or second holiday season, whichever comes first. Still got plenty to play from this gen, and I've begun to turn into a cheap ass gamer too :D. Also wanted to get a HDTV before or at the same time as I get the PS3/360, so the time required to save for that will extend the wait a little further. Add that to starting a career, potentially buying a house, and so on...

Add me to the "Won't touch launch h/w with a barge pole" crowd.

I'll no doubt consider getting a 360 by the time PS3 is gearing for release though, That way I can milk Microsoft's inevitable spoil-PS3-launch marketing / bundle deals. :D

There's plenty of Xbox games still in my backlog, and might pick up a PSTwo if the price drops at 360 launch, haven't played a PS2 game for a year so have a plenty big enough backlog there as well.

I also want to pick up a PSP sometime in the next 6 months.

Getting all these gaming h/w purchases in a 12 month timeframe without having the missus go ballistic? - The very fucking definition of impossible.

I've actually been thinking very hard about the xbox 360 lately, and was set to get one until I realized how many Gamecube games I could get on ebay for the same about of money (say $400) that I would spend on just the xb360 and 1 or 2 games. Sure, those games would run in joyous HD and all, but I've started listing off Cube games, and the lineup for the same amount of money is incredible, plus I could then buy a Revolution in 2006 and continue on my way.

thoughts?
New and shiny with less, or old and established with more?

Every next gen console is also going to be backwards compatible, so I think your argument about the current generation is moot. You can still play all of the new releases for this generation on the newer consoles, so there goes your argument about waiting because this generation still has a lot of life left.

Well for one, if we're just talkin' about XBX360 it's not 100% (or 98% like PS2) BC at launch. So, there's a solid chance that at least initially it won't be able to play all the games you own. It's a progressive thing, adding game compatability as time goes on according to the information we have. The label is fine for marketing, but it doesn't automatically make all the games I own work now. Which is irritating, because I actually would be better off to adopt early if I could sell my Xbox. 50 bucks, 60 bucks is a decent amount toward a 299 system.

Secondly, and this is the important part, when discussing any next-gen system - PS3, 360 or Rev - they all cost money + peripherals and the obligatory launch game(s). Let's say I pay the absolute minimum of 299 for a 360. That's 6 games I must opt not to get, or opt to delay.

For me, six guaranteed quality games is better than one potentially quality system that'll only reach full potential years down the line anyway. For clarity, before anyone tightens their suspenders, this applies to ALL systems.

Paying the highest possible price for a launch system is just silly. Waiting at least six months on every next gen system.

Having the latest and greatest is fun, don't let anyone tell you any different.

Yeah, you pay a premium, but your playing the games first and telling everyone else how awesome it is.

Fuck Next Gen.

I'll buy them in 3 years, when all the droughts are over and price drops have occured.

I hear that. I got burnt with the N64, burnt with the PS2, and burnt with the Xbox. All bought at launch. By the time there were any games out worth playing on the system, they had all taken nice price drops. Not this time! Im going to WAIT until I finish all of the stuff I have now, plus any other big games for current gen. THEN move on up.

all of the machines, one per region at least, with all the games and accessories.
Plus a 1080p tv for every room.

Yeah, I didn't read this thread.

I've been buying 16-bit shit offa Ebay and pre-owned in local stores lately, and I'm really more interested in collecting all the old carts that I used to have or always wanted than anything I see in the X360 launch. Aqcuired a Genny 2, 3, and a mini SNES just recently and more types of Genny gamepads than I ever knew existed.

On the other hand. I have been trying hard to keep progressive on the custom controller front, so buying into the X360 is a real possibilty for me just so I can be among the first, if not the first, to tear apart that controller and integrate it into arcade sticks and encoder boxes. If I get a good guide up during week one, that baby will ride for years.

i'm paying this out of my commutation allowance

the rest i'm saving for my rocket car and platinum plated house... the gold one sucks

I'm considering holding off myself. Not because of this gen. Fuck this gen. Because it's going to cost $450/console with the basic accessories and a single game.

Can I afford it? yes...but I'd much rather the money be invested into mutual funds rather than splurging on launch games.

I thought console gaming was supposed to be cheap.

You can't tell, but my jealousy is melting my chair :(

I'm holding off for about a year probably. Half-Life 2, Black, Fable: TLC should hold me until I graduate college (goddamn am I busy with classes) then its X360 all the way baby!

Ill probally pick up the 360 and PS3 at launch. I think I'll pass on Nintendo for a 2nd time. Mario and puppies just dont do much for me.

At the moment the only console I'm even remotely considering getting at launch is a PS3. With any luck I'll be able to skpi the 360 entirely this gen, as I want to get down to 2 consoles max. Given that the Xbox was my least played console this gen, and the Xbox360 announced lineup generally being a bit 'meh' to me, it's looking like the weakest link. A PS3 to cover my main gaming and a Rev to offer something different (+ the back catalogue, hopefully it'll be region-free as well).

But a PS3 at launch will depend on a) whether I feel I've sufficiently played my backlog of current gen games to my satisfaction, b) whether there are at least 3 games that I must absolutely have available to purchase and c) whether I feel like indulging in the hassle of a console launch, I ain't to keen on late night queuing.

i'm waiting till i can get the ps3 and x360 with mod chips installed. That is, if these systems have the ability to be modded. Either way, too pricey at launch to necessitate a purchase. The only system i'll get at launch'll be the revolution. I'm still playing my dreamcast, so i think i'm ok.

Backlog or no.....360/PS3 first day....Revolution after the first price drop.

There will always be a backlog.

True, but really it's about managing the size of it. I have a DVD rack that holds 10 cases, as long as that's not full I don't consider myself as having a backlog. At the the moment, it floweth over, and unless I get some serious gaming done in the next month, the piles of game boxes are only going to get bigger come September.
