Can't say I'm surprised considering this year's releases. I saw a bunch of movies in the years prior, but I was hardpressed to find a single movie I really enjoyed this year, let alone finding a set of movies to consistently go watch. The best movies I can recall offhand were March of the Penguins, The Aristocrats, and Syriana, though I enjoyed a few others. Of course, I don't blame the quality of movies for the hit, as there are countless other factors, but it's not particularly surprising to me. I've been readily disappointed by 2005 so far. 2003 and 2004 were much better to me.

I truly don't get it. To me, this was a fantastic year for movies!!

Star Wars: Episode 3
Sin City
Batman Begins
War of the Worlds
The History of Violence
The 40 Year Old Virgin
King Kong
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
The Corpse Bride
The Chronicles of Narnia
Madagascar
Walk the Line
The Devil's Rejects
The Posession of Emily Rose
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Land of the Dead

I loved ALL of these movies and saw several of them more than once. Personally I thought this has been a banner year for movies in terms of quality.

You forgot Pooh's Heffalump Movie. It's tied with Batman Begins as my favorite movie this year. Own it, saw it a good 10 times.

(I have a three year old daughter. And yes it's that good.)

You forgot the Wedding Crashers, but I forgive you all.

And theaters used to have deviled-fucking-eggs. I understand that today's crowd would make a big, smelly mess with that snack, but come on...

DEVILED EGGS!!!

One last thing before I go to bed.

The first thing I thought when I saw the thread title was, "Yay!" And I'm a serious movie lover. When a guy like me is rooting for the movie theater industry to crash and burn, you know they are doing something wrong.

Holy shit...wtf @ King Kong flopping at the Box Office so far? Largest movie of the year and its sales are abysmal!

Maybe they should try lowering the price of tickets and see how it does.

I'd be much more willing to go see a movie if it didn't cost me so god damn much.

Just for a date, you're looking at 20 bucks on the tickets and another 20 for cheap food/candy. That's 40 bucks for a 2-3 hour movie. Why spend that much when you can spend a fraction of that and rent a slightly older movie and watch it in the comfort of your own home?

Hollywood has nobody to blame but themselves. They are hurting themselves by trying to make these huge budget movies in the hopes that one will be the next 'Titanic' or 'Spider-Man' when really it's not necessary. Whoever said the fact that movies are on DVD in a few months time is also correct.

Back in the day people could only get the movie "experience" in a theater. Now we can get scan-line free widescreen Dolby Digital experiences in our home at mainstream prices. I can't see how ticket sales have anywhere to go but down regardless of the quality of movies.

Well, maybe this will lead to the decline of the "blockbuster", and the return of smaller, more interesting, more daring filmmaking. And lord knows that would be a good thing. I would love to see the types of films being made in America in the 70's start to be made again now.

You're right, that was the funniest movie I've seen in theares in the last few years. Part of the reason is the studio let them make an R rated movie instead of dictating PG-13. Hopefully that will happen more often now.

You need to rent 40 year old virgin! (unrated version)

This year I saw:

Star Wars: Episode 3
Sin City
Batman Begins
War of the Worlds
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
And possibly something else right near the start of the year that i'm forgetting.

I'm also going to go see Narnia at some point.

I wanted to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (fan of the orriginal), and king kong, corpse bride....but the fact is, its freaking expensive...for the same about of money i'd rather buy an older dvd on special, or a good book.

Yes! Years of crappy popcorn movies are finally starting to catch up to them. Let's hope the games industry is next. It's time for a wakeup call for these quick buck, shoverware pushers.

This is about the gist of it.

You want more money? Stop realeasing so much SHIT on celluloid. Every year there are less and less quality blockbusters and more big budget shit-balls.

Than factor in the ridiculous expense of going to a movie and it's a bit taxing.

So far this year I saw
BAtman Begins x2
Fantastic Four
Star Wars Ep 3 x2
Walk the Line (great movie)
and.... I can't remember... Thisis a problem too... so many UNMEMORABLE movies.

I don't see how it was such a dismal year. Lots of great movies out there. They might not have made as much as the analysts had hoped, but I enjoyed them. That's all that matters.

But ticket prices are getting a little bit too expensive. It doesn't surprise me that a lot of people are opting to download the movies or wait til they hit dvd. I probably wouldn't go to the movies as much as I do now if I wasn't still able to use my student id. Probably can't do for much longer though. The id is 4 years old now, and I'm looking pretty old. Guess I could always say I'm a grad student.

will totally Facebook friend you! *giggle* *LOL*
I find it pretty easy to ignore other patrons at the theater. I can stand the commercials. I jsut haven't been attending many movies this year because they all SUCK and they have NO appeal what-so-ever. I saw very few films this year, and I could count all of the memorable ones with nothing more than my fingers.

I don't even think there was really too many good comedies out this year. Wedding crashers, 40 year old virgin.....? See what I mean about memorable here?

This was simply an off year. A year where all of next year's kick ass movies were being filmed. Look at all of the films that have pretty good potential coming out next year:

The Matador
V for Vendetta
Inside Man
A Scanner Darkly
American Dreamz
Mission: Impossible III (atleast the action will be good)
The Da Vinci Code
X-Men 3
Nacho Libre
Cars
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (ehhhhhhh....on second thought, probably not)
Click (It's Sandler....maybe)
Superman Returns
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Lady in the Water
Miami Vice
Untitled Will Ferrell NASCAR Comedy
Snakes on a Plane(This year wins by default because of this one)
Jackass: The Movie 2 (!!!! I did NOT know this was coming out until just now! :D :D )
Grind House
The Children of Men (Maybe...)
The Grudge 2 (well, it's sure to rake in some cash)
Saw III (^^^^)
Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny
Stranger Than Fiction
Casino Royale
The Good Shepherd (JOE PESCI'S BACK!!)

If all these movies come out next year, there's no way it could be worse than this year.

2005 was very much a off year. Normally when making a top 10 film list of a year it is hard to narrow down my list to 10, this year I struggled to make 10. Next year however looks amazing. All of these are must-see's for me:

Mission: Impossible III - 5/5
The Da Vinci Code - 5/19
X-Men 3 - 5/26
Nacho Libre - 6/2
Cars - 6/9
Superman Returns - 6/30
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 7/7
High, Wide and Handsome - 8/4
Clerks 2: The Passion of the Clerks - August
Marie-Antoinette - 10/13
Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny - 10/26
Stranger Than Fiction - 11/10
Casino Royale - 11/17
Eragon - 12/15
The Fountain - 2006

If you stop spending $300 million to tell a story that could be told for far less, diversify the types of stories that you tell, and work to control the price of admission to the movies - the return on investment for Hollywood would be great. But as you push HD, let prices go through the roof, throw DVDs out there scant months after a movie has been released in theaters (for a price that in many cases is cheaper than going to the movies), and don't require theaters to somehow police the viewing experience - not for videocameras, but for people chatting on cellphones and causing other commotion - you will continue to see this downward spiral.

Going to the movies is not the enjoyable experience that it used to be and so I go a lot less. Now that I've got big as plasma sets in my house in a room designed to be a home theater with great 5.1 surround and such, my inclination to deal with the garbage that has become movie theaters decreases exponentially over time. Just start piping the theatrical release to my house.

These are the only candidate movies for me to see in a theater next year. Out of those I may see 2, maybe 3.

If I go to the theater I only go for the first showing in the morning around 10:30 or so. I went to see King Kong at that time on Friday and the place was pretty much empty. Cheap ticket price, $6.75... hardly anyone there except for some old people. == a good movie experience.

Working odd hours rocks.

J.J. Abrams man, JJ! When Abrams was doing Alias in season 1 and 2 before going off to do Lost it had some of the best espoinage stuf I ever seen. If anyone can turn out a good Spy-Action film it is Abrams.

Theatre chains around here introduced pre-show commercials and started raising prices eight years ago. Naturally, this was not accompanied by improvements in the quality of the experience or content. And I'm pretty sure that inflation in this country hasn't been 40% since 1998.

I hope the chains rot right along with Hollywood.

Did you know that if a theatre doesn't have a certain ticket price (HIGH) then they don't get the new movies when they're released?

This year has sucked for movies.

Lots of well made movies, with little to complain about in terms of production qualities.. but very little that stays with you.

The most memorable movie for me was Wedding Crashers (so over the top it was ridiculous) and to a lesser extent Star Wars (the opening sequence wow'd me). And for all my love of Firefly, Serenity was not successful because it was just too dark for its own good - it also couldn't compete with the amazing CG of Star Wars (despite being a better movie).

I only remember Kong because I saw it last night. I still remember Crash even though I saw it last winter - and that should tell you something about the impact of the movies that were released between then and now.

This just tells me that screenwriting has taken a nosedive. All that money being thrown at movies with so very few never-seen-before moments. It's like nobody's willing to take a chance.

That's why small screen shows like Arrested Development and LOST have left more of an impression on me this year.
