Home Depot fires 60 year old black man after man screamed slurs at him

Home Depot treats their workers horribly and pays them next to nothing I feel bad for anybody working there.

HD starts at about $10 an hour and bumps up to $12-13 before pay raises slow down, that's not bad for retail. And "treats their workers horribly" is definitely a store by store claim.

It doesn't maybe that is a regional thing but from knowing people that worked there while in college and multiple online articles regarding said company lack of vacation or sick days makes other retail places not seem as shit. That's saying something.

You also definitely accrue PTO at HD, so I don't know what people you've been talking to but they're speaking rectally

Great, Home Depot has miraculously seen the light and decided to offer his job back.

That's good to hear. I was going say a conversation that goes from 0 - 100 would be shocking to anyone, who knows how you would respond, it wasn't necessary to fire him even if he didn't handle the situation correctly.

Double edit: Nevermind, I see OP conveniently left out this part: "The problem here is that he had several opportunities to disengage and contact management to deal with the customer. We're appalled by this customer's behavior, but we also must require associates to follow proper protocol to defuse a situation for the sake of their safety and the safety of other associates and customers," a spokesperson for Home Depot said.

Nothing in the article implied this was the effect of outrage culture, and it only reports the employee's side of the verbal exchange...

The employee had amazing restraint.

I didn't read the article itself but just the quotes in the OP. What exactly is the racist attack he suffered again? I do not see it. Might be missing something.

That is not what I said at all.The days they can absent vs actual vacation time is half of what other retailers offer.

It's all one pot at Home Depot, they don't differentiate sick days from vacation in the PTO hours.

What retailer offers literally double what HD does?

Did you not read the thread either where it's been discussed like eight times that there wasn't actually a racist attack, just a bad clickbait title?

Im happy about this.

Obviously get him some training on de-escalting confrontation (all staff need it really, for their own and others safety) but Im not going to hold it against this guy that he reacted.

A warning and training would have been suffice imo, good to hear he isnt without his job.

Training costs money.

The kind of money that so many people here disagreed that Starbucks should have invested in.

The company will likely consider this a one-time thing.

On the subject of leave in America, I heard PTO is not a legally mandated thing? And help me understand paternity leave, so many people say it's not a thing but then I see companies like MS and Apple give employees paternity leave and I'm told that comes from their sick time off? So what happens if a woman is pregnant and she doesn't have much sick time? Does she get fired for not showing up? Do they take it from her vacation days??

These are near minimum wage jobs.
Why on earth would a different store hire him? A serious question.
There is no shortage of people with so few skills that minimum wage is their only option, even at that age.
Why would a different store hire a 60 years old person that went viral on the internet after a customer interaction in the store?

Not saying right or wrong or that he deserves that harsh punishment but I don't think any store will ever hire him again (unless they do 0% background checks which might be the case for min wage jobs).
You ever end up in the bad side of the stick on the judge-of-social-media and you will be tainted for the rest of your life.

At Home Depot the only walk in position is cashiers, whom get paid the least. They need good, reliable, intelligent people.

No. I pretty much read the comment about 15-20 back of mine that said it was a racist attack. I was wondering where they put 2 and 2 together on that.

We routinely had a work meeting in retail for an hour after a shift or before just to cover things like this, it's something they should be doing. Even if it's just given out as brief over a few pieces of paper, what expectations are and how to de-escalate situations.

It's a crapshoot as there is no federal regulation beyond FMLA, which is unpaid leave of absence.

If you call off sick, unless you're salaried, you typically don't get paid.

At a lot of places outside of "dream jobs" like Apple and Google, if they offer benefits like PTO/PDO/VAC, wages are not always competitive, to offset the cost of those benefits.

We covered some of this in a thread months back when an EU poster asked why we didn't get a healthcare system similar to EU. The most vocal American posters said they'd rather people die than be forced to subsidize their healthcare.

Capitalism is the American way.

In the hill article there is no racial slur but that Trump comment with the ghetto comment seems racist enough to me. Good on HD for offering back his job.
