In this apartment I live in, I have 2 other roommates, all are connected to the internet with a router in my room. However, my two other roommates computers can share files together in "My Network Place" while mine cannot. In my own "My Network Place", I only see my own computer's identity and not theirs, and they cannot see my computer in their "My Network Place". I've tried just about every single possible way to fix this but to no aveil. All the configuration for my computer is set exactly the same as my roommates' computers, like the name of the workgroup and so on... please help, helpful GAF !

The network is trying to tell you that you and your two roommates are not compatible. Get out while you still can.

How's so ? We're all on XP... and I set everybody up with the "Set up home/small business wizard" thing with the same configuration :(

Um... If you can't see them, are you in the same workgroup? Maybe stupid question since you did the wizard, but forget sharing, just SEEING the computers on the network should be the primary concern at this point.

Can you ping them?

Yes, appearantly I can ping them both... and I did set the three of us to be in the same workgroup. However, when I clicked on the "View Entire Network" thing, I only see my computer's identity there...

Try typing in their computer names in your browser.

If their names are Bob and Joe then type

\\joe

and

\\bob

If you are using a fa311 network card switch to 10baseT (half Duplex)
I had the same problem with that card

I'm not sure which type of network card I have, but it's an on-board Nvidia network card. Also, I just tried to type \\Rebecca\ and \\Adia\ into my browser, and my computer cannot detect them. However, if I type in their IP, I can access them...

Without getting too technical, just do this...

Go to My Network Places
On the side panel, you should see something to the effect of "Set up a home or office network"

*Know your Network/Workgroup name. You are probably on a different workgroup then they are since you can't see them, only ping them.

Also, when asked, use the existing Internet Connection method to connect since that already works fine.

Although I'm not sure about the network name, but the workgroup name is exactly the same...

Is there a 'Network Bridge' in your network places? If not, do as I siggested above.

Yes, one of my roommates' computer has a bridge connection. I have no idea what that is about so I dared not touch it. I mean, I shut it down once, and her internet stopped working, so I reactivate it.

I think that some xp versions defaults the workgroup to mshome.net or something strange
No, I renamed the workgroup to be "Home"... simple but effective :p

I recently had a similar problem, but I'm pretty sure the root of it was that one computer was ME, while the two that networked together easily were XP. You'll find a lot of suggestions at this forum topic. There's a post by me saying near the end that none of it seemed to work yet, but I just kept trying to add or play with the configuration of the Network settings and protocols in Control Panel, and eventually... things clicked.

Okay, I just logged into my router setup page and found Adia's computer, who is the one with a Network Bridge, has 2 IPs... and I cannot access her computer with either of the IP. However, I can still access my other roommate's, Rebecca's, computer with her IP address. THE PLOT THICKENS ! Oh, and Adia's computer cannot go on the internet if I shut down her Network Bridge for some very weird reason...

Not strange at all... That's how it works. 'Bridges' network connections.
