Honestly what's the point of spending money on the highest gpu

Condolences to my gamer friends who are without VRR

I'll buy a top of the line gpu in a few years probably, right now it still feels like raytracing is in its infancy still. 3 years from now I think Nvidia at least will have iterated enough to have a huge improvement over what they have currently in that area. And it will probably future proof for like, the next decade

Wait, i thought you were in the cyberpunk\rtx bandwagon, maybe i'm mistaking person.

I like RT, not liking the CPU hit. Not much of a fan of cyberpunk, its a nice benchmark tho.

Probably takes until the next console generation where RT is probably becoming free. We need RT only games but as of now with lots of older gpu's and the gpu prices / wattage increases i don't see RT become anywhere near useful for the upcoming years besides just being another toggle.

i got rtx 3080 so i can play games at ultra settings. Ps5 has rtx 2060 level gpu which is clearly outdated and i cant stand 30fps at all. 60fps is the way forward to play any games.

I don't ask that question. Tbh I have no regrets spending my money on my nerdy hobbies, some things are insanely expensive but I don't drive a Tesla and I don't drink or smoke and I still have my old iPhone 11 with a broken shell.

It's like asking why people buy a Lambo when a cheap car can also get you to the same places. You have to abide by the speed limit too! What a waste of money!

Cause we want the best and can afford it. Simple. Can the consoles output raytracing, 4k res, and run them at 90+fps? Nope.

Everyone making fun of high-end pc gamers better not even think about getting a mid-gen refresh console or you're a hypocrite. Also, buy the PS6 and XSZ two years after they launch when they have actual exclusives or you're also a hypocrite.

Most consumer electronics is a complete waste of money and resources.

Still, sometimes you want to reward yourself and feel some satisfaction.

That said, if it becomes compulsive then you should probably think twice about it.

After Stray, Horizon FW and Returnal I stopped believing in RT as valuable metric. the few less blurry puddles in Cyberpunk are not worth the extra $1000. And we are not getting actual games that look close to the demos anytime soon.
Cyberpunk is fully raytraced in that overdrive mode. It's easily a gen ahead of the console versions.

There has been a gap since roughly 2007. It is at its smallest the day a new console launches and then grows every year until the next generation of console launches. The current consoles are a generation behind the 30X0 and about to be two behind. That's a pretty big gap.

The power is there, the games that make use of them aren't. It's ridiculous that there's so much unused graphics power that 4K 120FPS is a thing.

Some people just want to crank games at their maximum and can afford the luxury costs, I guess.

In hindsight I will say this much: while I do not regret my decision, if one already has a PS5 or XsX and a good 4K and surround sound system, I doubt you'll be blown away enough with true 4K/120fps/Gsync/full raytracing PC gaming to justify spending the $3k-ish I did to experience the premium experience. The latest consoles aren't too far behind really given how straddled with the last gen most games are.

I bought a $2400 gaming rig with a 3080Ti in it about a year ago. It was a waste of money. Not one game have I ever felt like used the 3080Ti to its fullest potential. You can get slight improvements compared to next-gen consoles on games that are optimized well for 5x the price.

Let's not forget that most games are not optimized well for higher-end hardware and don't scale at all past a certain point (ex. Escape from Tarkov where I get the exact same performance as my friend with a 2080).
*Buying a 3080ti and still rocking a 1080p60fps monitor*

Get a 27 inch g sync compatible 240hz monitor and tell me you only get slight improvements compared to a console.

This sounds like some peasant downplaying something he never tried.

When you think of it Next gen consoles are also a waste of money for the time being and honestly I think that ps4 and Xbox one could have been pushed even further.

We never saw what Sony first party studios/Playground/Coalition could do on a ps4/Xbox and one had they targeted 720p 30 fps. Devs made 7th gen consoles beg for mercy during 2013-2015 to go out with a bang. Rise of the tomb raider or destiny being an example.

And only a handful of AAA/AA games will use all that fancy HW on next gen consoles. Power is not an issue, budgets are. You will still get tons of 2D indie games, walking simulators and more. Plus all the MP GAAS that need to reach the broadest possible audience

Like the same point in getting a tesla plad, or luxery yacht etc

To have the best experience. 4k 120fps @ max settings yo

The value of the difference is closer to $50, not $500+ . And RT is not consistently better, I would rather have the clearer non-RT setting.

Ah, the "I would rather have" crowd.

I remember people would rather have 30 fps than paying over price for faster framerates when you can't feel or see the difference.

Then this gen having 120 fps was a game changer for the very same people.

It's easy to prefer what you have rather than what you can't achieve

The grapes are sour attitude...plenty on this forum.

I like to own the best hardware so that I can see just how far the video games industry has fallen when it comes to releasing a working consumer product. Nothing better than spending ridiculous amounts of money to play the new hot open world game only to realise that, yet again, some corporate game dev that has been doing this for years still cant get their games to run properly. Since living by this new philosophy I have realised that a large percentage of the video games industry is filled with scam artists and until those happy memories of my youth start to fade, I will continue to subject myself to being scammed.

Nowadays there's not really a reason. Used to be youd get dramatic graphics and frame rate improvements with newer generations, and games in turn kept pushing the envelope. Combo of moore's law and bespoke PC games that were then ported to console later. Now, AAA games come to console first or simultaneously, so pushing the PC hardware to the limit is not a priority. There is no Quake 3 anymore. Plus, graphics improvements nowadays tend to be incremental anyway thanks to diminishing returns.

A long way of saying that I'm still rocking a 2070s and I can run whatever the hell I want just fine. Only except is Asetto Corsa Competizione in VR, but no one runs that well lol:

Since consoles are pretty much running on cpu architecture. What's the point of buying top of the line gpus when the majority of people have a 1060 and developers keep that in mind when developing most games. Sure the graphics maybe shinnier and you get a bit more fps but in comparison to consoles the gap isn't as big as it was like 10 years ago.
Why buy a BMW or Jeep when you can buy a Honda or Kia? I mean you travel the same roads don't you?

Some people want a better experience above the consumer grade and it doesn't invalidate you experience. But I'd rather drive those roads in my renegade than I ever would a Civic 🤷‍♀️

Because all my friends are on console and a high end graphics card gives me more credibility when debating them and makes my opinions to our group discussions more valuable.

You answered your own question.

For better graphics and more FPS.

DLSH looks nothing like this on consoles.....if the console version is fine for you, then thats that, some people want Raytraced Global Illumination.
Totally off-topic but I'm not sure Dying Light (it took me a moment to work out what it was, I had to google the SH bit) deserves to be abbreviated (a-la GOW, the other GOW, BOTW, DOTA, HL etc.). I often see this when people abbreviate names for games that aren't really that well-known. Especially here where you're just posting environment pictures (a first person view photo would make it more obvious).

Mini rant over, carry on!

Some people are driven to chase diminishing returns to great lengths. Even if they themselves cannot honestly tell the difference between the output of the Best Thing and Second Best Thing, they will still have a mental itch to "upgrade" so that they can feel secure in being on the cutting edge.

Most people who do this will not admit it, even to themselves.

last time i checked 4090 is a bigger number than 4080.

Also the 4090 is trash. I mean who wants to be owning a second rate shitty GPU when the 4090 Ti comes out?

The true PC players will buy a 4090 then sell that shit to buy a 4090 Ti when it comes out. Always gotta have the best.
I bought a 144hz monitor so I bloody damn well expect to play at 144fps.

Imagine my horror when everyone says I need to cap games to 141fps.

Dying Light Stay Human.
Would it have been so hard to type that in the first place? How could you expect anyone to know that lol (laughing out loud)?

You might have been thinking you were saving time not typing it out but look...you just had to type it out in a second comment. That is more wasted time than if you had just told everyone wtf (what the fuck) it was you were saying in the first place lol.
